October 11, 1884 Eleanor Roosevelt is Born Eleanor Roosevelt was born on October 11, 1884, in New York City, New York. Her given name was Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, but she rarely used the name Anna. Her last name was Roosevelt when she was born and remained Roosevelt even after she married as she was a very distant cousin of Franklin D. Roosevelt, her future husband. Eleanor Roosevelt attended an English boarding school for a time and was known for her intelligence and her abilities as a leader. She was very involved in community service and continued to have an interest in helping others throughout her life. She married Franklin D. Roosevelt and helped him in his political career. They had six children, but she managed to work to help her husband’s political career more and more, especially after he was diagnosed with polio. At the same time, she began to show her own interest in the affairs of the nation. When the United States was involved in World War I, she was able to be involved in a great deal of volunteer work, including visiting the wounded soldiers and working in a Red Cross canteen. When Franklin D. Roosevelt became president, Eleanor traveled across the country on lecture tours. She held press conferences and wrote newspaper columns and magazine articles. She was also in favor of equal rights, child welfare, and housing reform. At times her stand on these topics caused controversy. Eleanor Roosevelt also wrote many books. She continued to serve the country in several ways, even after her husband’s death. She died on November 7, 1962.
