It’s amazing to think 4-H’er of the Month 4 October has Future Events 4 arrived and we are already gearing up for the new 2013 4-H project year. I look back over the year and wonder where all the time went! For the October Pledger newsletter I would like to thank everyone who gave Montana State University Robotics Instructor Gregg Switzer a warm welcome. Your energy and enthusiasm in the September 4-H robotics workshops made Gregg feel right at home. I would like to recognize and thank district 4-H Council President Forrest Nelson for the generous donation of lodging at her “River’s Edge Bed and Breakfast.” After a long day of driving from Fairbanks, Gregg was grateful for the warm hospitality and bed awaiting him in Soldotna. I would also like to thank the Kenai Teen Center Boys and Girls Club for hosting this great event. The Boys and Girls Club donation of a free meeting space helped the district provide this amazing training at no cost in a warm, comfortable, state-of-the-art setting.

As a follow-up to the robotics training, I am looking for any youth and their adult counterparts who participated in the September workshop who would be interested in meeting to discuss fundraising and organizational strategies necessary to securing district robotics kits and planning at least two local robotics challenge events during the new project year. If this sounds like something you would be interested in, please contact me at your earliest convenience. As the new program year gets under way, it is important to note that the Kenai District 4-H Council and the Junior Market Livestock Club are both looking for members and adults to serve in critical leadership roles on each organization’s executive committees. If you are interested in serving on one or both of these leadership councils and are prepared to commit to at least one additional meeting per month, please contact the CES office and let us know at your earliest possible convenience. For the District Council there are a total of five (5) leadership slots to be filled. The District 4-H Council will take final nominations and hold its election at the district annual meeting on October 15. For JML there are a total of nine (9) leadership slots needing filled. JML will take final nominations and hold its election at the JML annual meeting on November 19. (continue on page 2)

Family Entertainment

As a final note͕ our Annual Awards and Achievement Ceremony has been scheduled for October 29, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. A location is still being selected and will be announced through the e-mail listserv and district 4-H Facebook page prior to the event. Judging for record books will be complete and books will be returned following the awards ceremony. Participants are encouraged to call or drop by the CES office to sign up to bring a potluck item to share. I am looking forward to another exciting project year and can’t wait to see the many exciting, innovative and inspiring projects our special 4-H community generates over the next 12 months! Happy National 4-H Month! Sincerely, Jason Floyd, 4-H and Youth Development Agent

The Kenai River Folk Dancers will hold a contra dance from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, October 20, at K-Beach Elementary School. All dances are taught and called to live music. Bring non-marking shoes. Potluck snacks are optional. Admission is $5 for adults, and children under 16 are free when accompanied by an adult. For more information, call Raymond, 283-5403. Future dance dates are November 17 and December 15.

Nikiski's Funky Farmers would like to invite anyone interested in joining our 4-H club to our first meeting of the new 4-H year. It will be held at the North Peninsula Recreation Center on October 1 from 6-8 p.m. We will have icebreaker games, hand out record books and sign up for the new year. This is a great opportunity for new families to learn about everything our Funky Farmer Club offers. We encourage all to come.

On September 8 the Fuzzy Wuzzys met at the guest apartment of the Boatrights to make natural dyes for wool. Matthea Boatright and Caroline Huber picked apart pine cones while Alie Minium and Katie Cooper smashed elder berries to cook in crock pots. We also had crock pots of onion skins, celery, dandelion heads and red cabbage. We added vinegar or alum to each as a mordant, which helps the dye hold fast in the fiber. Some of us also decided to try beets and grass on our own at home. The Boatrights had prepared rice crispy treats, which we all gladly snacked on. We are looking forward to the next meeting to find out exactly how the dyes will color our wool. Caroline Huber It's almost time to start another 4-H year and the first order of business is elections. Horse and Livestock Unlimited will have its annual officer elections meeting on September 30 at 2 p.m., location to be decided this next week. Look for the details of the meeting on our Facebook club page. We will also decide what community service projects to do and plan fun activities for the winter. The club will also be meeting on October 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Solid Rock Bible Camp for the Hay Maze. This is an annual Horse and Livestock Unlimited event. We want to invite all 4-H’ers and their friends to come and join us for some fun and to learn a little about 4-H. If you want to join us, bring warm clothes and a flashlight or headlamp; the cost is only $5. You will have to fill out a permission slip signed by your parents (this is a Solid Rock requirement).

For those involved or interested in Shooting Sports I will be working to identify a date some time before the new year to schedule a rifle-specific new leader training. If you are interested in starting a club or in getting more club parents qualified as Shooting Sports co-leaders, please contact the CES office and sign our class interest list. Sometime in November or December I will contact people on the list to determine and finalize a training date.

Kenai Peninsula 4-H Pledger

Kenai Peninsula 4-H Pledger This month there was a business meeting for the North Road Rangers. We held nominations for president, vice president and scribe. These positions are for a year. The people who were voted in were John Boatright for president, Matthea Boatright for vice president and Daniel Boatright for scribe. The rotational jobs went to Alie Minium, information officer, Colton Rankin, photographer and Gracie Rankin, snack coordinator. We added Matthew Minium as our treasurer. Gracie Rankin. Howdy! We are excited to announce the Phantom Rider’s 4-H Club, a new club in the Homer area. Our main focus is the horse project, with additional projects in vet science and leadership. We have a great group of 4-H’ers involved and are looking forward to a very exciting first year. Each month we concentrate on a new area of horse knowledge at an unmounted meetinŐ, then an area of horsemanship at a mounted meeting. At our upcoming October meeting, we will paint the skeleton on a live horse then watch the horse move and see how a saddle fits on the horse in relation to the skeleton. For 4-H’ers wanting to know more about the skeleton, they can visit our club website to watch videos, read handouts and ask questions – even earn a certificate!

The October 4-H’er of the Month is Jenna Hansen. This year Jenna has tirelessly served as the vice president for both the district 4-H Council and the JML Council. Jenna won the 2012 Caring for the Kenai Science Contest and continually attributes her related success to her many past experiences in 4-H. Jenna is always ready to lend a helping hand when asked and participates in nearly every district-sponsored event provided through the project year. Jenna’s main projects in 2012 were her JML steer, educational animal Crash the reindeer and her Alaska Sea Glass/Caring for the Kenai project. Jenna is a great record keeper, enthusiastic public presenter, a good team player and everything a 4-H teen ambassador should be. Congratulations Jenna and keep up the good work!
