Monthly Agenda April

Highlights Sant Jordi April 23

Disney: Art of Storytelling Until June 24

(some events take place the days before)

For over 80 years, The Walt Disney Company has been telling stories to audiences of millions; by taking classic tales and revising, enhancing and updating them as movies, Walt Disney and his successors have successfully maximised their appeal to young and old alike. This new exhibition features over 200 items from the company’s archive including storyboards, screenplays and digital prints. It takes place at CaixaForum, one of Barcelona’s leading art centres that’s located in a renovated modernista industrial building at the foot of Montjuïc ‘mountain’. As well as its temporary exhibitions, it’s worth visiting CaixaForum for a guided tour around the site, which was designed by prestigious architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch, including the rooftop terraces.

The feast day of Sant Jordi (Saint George, as he’s known in English) on April 23 is when Catalans celebrate love and literature; tradition dictates that men present their love with a rose while women gift a book to their partner. In addition, why not try the special Sant Jordi bread that many bakeries sell, made from spicy ‘sobrassada’ sausage and cheese to create the colours of the Catalan flag. In Barcelona, as in towns and cities around the region, the streets are filled with stalls overflowing with flowers and books; and while it’s not a public holiday, the atmosphere is always festive with outdoor readings, book signings, traditional culture and people strolling around throughout the day. Individual institutions celebrate Sant Jordi in their own way: for example, Casa Batlló covers its façade with roses (Apr 20 – 23) and this year hosts its very first exhibition, which is dedicated to the subject of love, appropriately enough; at Casa de les Punxes there are special activities based on the dragon-slaying legend of the knight; and Palau Güell pays tribute to its original owner, Eusebi Güell, who died 100 years ago. Barcelona is a very literary city, a place that has long inspired writers both local and from abroad and its rich, diverse literary heritage has been recognised through its participation in UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network as a City of Literature since 2015. A number of activities take place on and around the day itself: International Comic Fair (Apr 12 – 15, Fira Barcelona Montjuic), an unmissable date for comic fans with authors and illustrators from around the world; Mon Llibre (Apr 14, 15 at MACBA and CCCB) is an annual book festival for children and young people; Diàlegs de Sant Jordi (Apr 19-21, various times and venues) feature a series of conversations between writers both local and international as a way to bring readers closer to authors; and Nit del Drac (Apr 22 at Plaça del Rei) commemorates the birth or death of different Catalan writers. With Barcelona’s literary history, there’s much to discover related to books and authors. You could take a self-guided literary route about George Orwell, contemporary and historical Catalan writers such as Quim Monzó, Mercè Rodoreda, J.V. Foix and Joan Maragall or Don Quixote or, if you prefer, sign up for a guided tour (by Icono Serveis Culturals) that takes you to places mentioned in The Cathedral of the Sea, The Shadow of the Wind or Ghosts of Barcelona (by Sylvie Lagarda-Mata). There are also guided tours related to art and history in Barcelona, with 33 different literature-themed ones on offer (by conèixerBCN). www.barcelona.cat www.visitbarcelona.com

Cirque du Soleil: Totem Until May 6 The renowned contemporary circus company Cirque du Soleil has set up a new venue in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, a city that borders Barcelona, and for its inaugural event is putting on a two-month run of Totem. This fantastical show is based on the origins of life, and is full of symbolism and nature, with water playing an especially important part. As always with Cirque du Soleil, audiences can enjoy a performance featuring incredible acrobatics and circus stunts, amazing special effects, stunning costumes and make-up, and a standout soundtrack.

GuitarBCN 18 Every year, Barcelona welcomes a wide range of musicians to its Guitar Festival, including both local and international acts, legendary names and young talent. In recent times, stars such as Bob Dylan, Noel Gallagher and Deacon Blue have performed as part of GuitarBCN, and flamenco, classical, blues and experimental sounds have all been featured on the lineup. This month, you can catch rockers Joe Satriarni, John Petrucci and Uli Jon Roth all perform together (Apr 7, Auditori del Fòrum), the fusion sounds of El Kanka (Apr 12-13, Barts), hear the popular music of Israeli singer Noa (Apr 13, Teatre-Auditori Sant Cugat), the latest folk-blues release from Asaf Avidan (Apr 26, Barts), and discover Miquel Vilella, a Catalan pop star who sings in both his mother tongue and English (Apr 27, Barts Club).
