Exercise our legal right to maintain focus on criminal law rather than doing the federal government's job of immigration
THE CULVER CITY CITY COUNCIL MUST DO EVERYTHING IN ITS POWER TO STOP TRUMP’S DIVISIVE AGENDA. 1. Declare Culver City to be a “sanctuary city.” When specific communities—such as noncitizens, or Muslims—face specific threats, we must send a clear message. 2. Protect personal information against use for immigration enforcement. 3. Exercise our legal right to maintain focus on criminal law rather than doing the federal government’s job of immigration enforcement. The Culver City Police Department is not in the business of immigration enforcement, nor should it be. By legally declining to inquire into anyone’s immigration status or to arrest/detain based on immigration status, the CCPD better maintains the trust and cooperation of our community. In light of pressure from the Trump administration for local police departments to voluntarily do the federal government’s job on immigration, the City Council should affirm the CCPD’s approach. 4. Reject any efforts to profile, register, or otherwise restrict the liberty of Muslims or people of Middle Eastern descent. 5. Celebrate and protect the exercise of civil rights and civil liberties, including public demonstrations. 6. Review and modify City ordinances and policing practices to avoid indirectly facilitating immigration enforcement, racial or religious profiling, or political repression against those taken into City custody. We should reduce the risk of racial profiling and prioritize policing of serious offenses. Arrest for minor, nonviolent offenses can lead to deportation because fingerprint checks alert federal immigration authorities that an immigrant is in custody and can be intercepted at the County jail. 7. Contribute to the L.A. Justice Fund for legal assistance to residents facing deportation. Culver City should contribute proportionately to the County-wide effort to ensure that no one is deported because they couldn’t hire a lawyer. People are scared, and deserve elected leaders’ support. Let’s leave immigration law enforcement to the feds and stick to what Culver City does best: serving our own community. TRUMP WANTS TO DEPORT MILLIONS OF OUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS. But, he can’t do it without the help of local law enforcement.

Trump has already ordered the hiring of 10,000 new ICE agents. If he’s able to enlist local police to perform immigration enforcement, we’re looking at 760,000 more officers tasked with the detention and deportation of immigrants.

This would have two impacts upon our community. Our officers will be less focused on the crimes that harm us, and undocumented members of our community will fear our local police. This makes all of us less safe.

How can we stop this? •

Pressure cities to adopt sanctuary policies that support the police to do their job, not ICE’s.

Monday, March 27th at 7pm, the Culver City Council will be voting on a Sanctuary Policy. Please show up to make your voice heard!
