MAMMOTH DISCOVERY Back in May, a southern Ellis County man scraped a bone in a gravel pit as he excavated it. Little did he or his family realize, until they dug further, they had discovered not only a tusk, but an almost complete skeleton of a Columbian mammoth. Since then, the story of “Ellie May,” the Ellis County mammoth has caught the attention of media outlets across the world, as well as scientists and those simply wanting to see As dozens of volunteers joined the owner, and a Navarro College archeologist to unMay,” nicknamed for the county and month she was found in, stay in a local museum? Above, a volunteer helps uncover the mammoth. In June, the dig site was opened to volunteers 16 and older, who wanted to help dig the skeleton out of a southern Ellis County gravel pit. More than 70 volunteers helped during the almost two month process, working when weather permitted.

In August, the owner Wayne McEwen decided to donate the skeleton for research and eventually public display at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science in Dallas. Pictured is Tom Vance, left, the dig site director and Navarro College archeologist; Sunday Crider, middle, the site’s volunteer coodrinator; and Perot fossil preparator Ron Tykoski. The mammoth skeleton was determined to be female and was at least 30,000-40,000 years old. Perot representatives asked the Waxahachie Daily Light to not disclose the location to help protect the mammoth bones from anyone who might want to disrupt the excavation process, because the bones were very brittle.

By mid-August, workers had labeled every bone, and put a special glue in cracked areas to keep the bones from breaking. Oddly, Tykoski said, the bones hadn’t mineralize and turn to a solid stone-like state like most other fossils, which made the mammoth skeleton extremely fragile.
