Online Rooms The Participant Role

Author: Kev Lavery Last Updated: 22/04/2016

In this guide you will learn about: • The possibilities and limitations of the Participant role • Using the Chat Pod • Starting a Private Chat • Using the Quick Interactions and Status icons • Enabling and retracting Participant permissions individually • Enabling and retracting Participant permissions for a whole group

Roles in Online Rooms In Online Rooms there are three roles that Attendees can be assigned - each with varying privileges. The Host is the creator and facilitator of the meeting. They are in complete control over the session, all user privileges and promotion as well as all meeting setup options. The Presenter is the middle tier role and much of the privileges of this role relate to presentation of materials - they can activate their own microphones and webcams, control presentation materials, share their own screen, upload files for attendees to download, and contribute to (and save) the Notes Pod. They cannot control any administrator aspects of a room or switch between Layouts. The Participant role is the default role for Attendees and has the most limited default privileges. Participants can view the presentation and hear any audio but are unable to make any changes. These limitations are not permanent though. Inside a session the Host can make a lot of changes to what a Participant can and can’t do.

Default Permissions By default Participants are able to hear and see the presenter and view the content they are sharing. They can use the chat pod to communicate with the rest of the attendees in the room. They can also start private chats with other attendees (including hosts) and use these as another means of in room communication.

Selecting the chat pod options allows you to: Change the text size or colour of your chat text so that your messages stand out from other students/participants.

Participants also have a range of possible quick interactions available to help them engage in sessions.

It is possible for the Host to upgrade the individual permissions of attendees. The Host can enable microphone, webcam, or drawing tools. The host can also request the Participant share their screen. They can retract these permissions quickly and easily if needed.

The host is able to enable microphones and webcam use by all Participants if they think it will prove advantageous to the session.

Online Rooms is designed to be a very collaborative space and, despite its assumed limitations, the Participant role is a great way to take advantage of some of those features.
