How To Use This Document This document contains information on open and resolved caveats, and operational information specific to the Dell Networking operating system (Dell Networking OS™) software and the Open Automation features. Caveats are unexpected or incorrect behavior, and are listed in order of Problem Report (PR) number within the appropriate sections.

Note: Customers can subscribe to caveat update reports or use the BugTrack search tool to read current information about open and closed software caveats. To subscribe or use BugTrack, visit iSupport at: https:// www.force10networks.com/CSPortal20/BugTrack/SearchIssues.aspx. BugTrack currently tracks software caveats opened in FTOS version 6.2.1.1 and later. All Release Notes are available on the Software Center tab of iSupport. The link to the relevant Release Notes for each software version is next to the link for that version: https://www.force10networks.com/CSPortal20/Software/Downloads.aspx

Supported Hardware Open Automation 9.6(0.0) is supported on the S4810, S4820T, S5000, S6000, Z9000, Z9500 and MXL Switch platforms.

New Features The following features are new to Open Automation 9.6(0.0).

Caution: The Dell Open Automation Virtual Server Networking™ software package (the "Product") may contain the VMware SDK for Perl, which is licensed by VMware, Inc. VMware will not provide technical support for the VMware SDK included in the Product. Users interested in writing scripts for VMware products must obtain the VMware SDK directly from VMware. You may not create scripts for VMware products through use of the VMware SDK included in the Virtual Server Networking package. End Users may use the Dell Virtual Server Networking according to the terms, conditions, and limitation of the pertinent Dell End User License Agreement only. Refer to the Open Automation Guide for complete descriptions of the following supported features. Open Automation Feature

Open Automation Feature

Description

Virtual Server Networking

Virtual Server Networking (VSN) provides network connectivity, security, and automatic re-provisioning of VLANs when virtual machines are migrated in a data center. Multiple hypervisors are supported, including VMware vSphere and Citrix XenServer.

Programmatic Interface

Programmatic Interface provides a REST API as an integrated part of the Dell Networking operating system, allowing clients to manage the switch via an XML-based Web services interface.

Graphical User Interface

A Graphical User Interface (GUI) allows you to retrieve and update switch attributes and characteristics without entering Dell Networking OS CLI commands. A Web Server running both HTTP and HTTPS communicates with the GUI.

Default CLI Syntax or Behavior Changes None.

Documentation Errata None

Open Automation Installation Open Automation 9.6(0.0) is supported as follows: — — — — — — —

S4810 switches require Dell Networking OS version 9.6(0.0) or later. S4820T switches require Dell Networking OS version 9.6(0.0) or later. S5000 switches require Dell Networking OS version 9.6(0.0) or later. S6000 switches require Dell Networking OS version 9.6(0.0) or later. Z9000 switches require Dell Networking OS version 9.6(0.0) or later. Z9500 switches require Dell Networking OS version 9.6(0.0) or later. MXL Switches require Dell Networking OS version 9.6(0.0) or later.

Refer to the S4810, S4820T, S5000, S6000, Z9000, Z9500 and MXL Switch Release Notes for information on how to upgrade Dell Networking OS images. Open Automation 9.6(0.0) components are installed as follows: • • •

4

|

Bare Metal Provisioning is included as part of each Dell Networking OS image. BMP runs on S4810, S4820T, S5000, S6000, Z9000, Z9500 and MXL Switch platforms with Dell Networking OS version 9.6(0.0). Smart Scripting, Programmatic Interface, and Web Server are installed as a single package when you install Smart Scripting (see Installing Smart Scripting). Virtual Server Networking is installed as a separate package (see Installing Virtual Server Networking (VSN)).

Third-party management tools that function as plug-ins to the Open Automation Framework are installed independently on network devices. To download the supported third-party management tools, go to the Support web site as described in Accessing Dell Networking Technical Support.

Note: VSN is supported only on standalone switches.

Installing Smart Scripting Some components of SmartScripts are part of Dell Networking OS. Others are distributed in a SmartScripts package. The SmartScripts package can be downloaded from the Dell Networking website. Use the information in the following table to download the correct package. Platform

The Smart Scripting package is downloaded with the following files and functionality: • • • • •

Perl interpreter and associated files Python interpreter and associated files Expanded set of UNIX utilities REST-like API based on CGI scripts Web server (HTTP and HTTPS)

To enable a scripting framework before the Smart Scripting package is installed, Dell Networking OS includes TCL, its Expect extension, and a number of UNIX utilities. You install the Smart Scripting package in the same way as you install a Dell Networking OS release: directly from local flash memory on a switch or from an external drive on a network server. Because the installation takes time, it is performed in the background. When the download is complete, a message is displayed on the console. The package installation updates the running-configuration file. Caution: Uninstall any previous version of SmartScripts and VSN before installing new versions.

Note: If you have upgraded the SmartScripts package to 3.1.1.0 or later revision, the Open Automation (OA) package must be uninstalled before downgrading the Dell Networking OS image. The following procedure describes the process of downgrading the Dell Networking OS image corresponding to the 9.6(0.0) release to a image that corresponds to an earlier release:

| 5

www.dell.com | support.dell.com

1.

Uninstall the SmartScripts 3.1.1.0 package.

2.

Downgrade the Dell Networking OS image to an earlier release.

3.

Caveat Definitions Category

Description

PR#

Problem Report number that identifies the caveat.

Severity

S1—Crash: A software crash occurs in the kernel or a running process that requires a restart of the router or process. S2—Critical: A caveat that renders the system or a major feature unusable, which can have a pervasive impact on the system or network, and for which there is no workaround acceptable to the customer. S3—Major: A caveat that effects the functionality of a major feature or negatively effects the network for which there exists a workaround that is acceptable to the customer. S4—Minor: A cosmetic caveat or a caveat in a minor feature with little or no network impact for which there might be a workaround.

Synopsis

Synopsis is the title or short description of the caveat.

Release Note

Release Notes description contains more detailed information about the caveat.

Workaround

Workaround describes a mechanism for circumventing, avoiding, or recovering from the caveat. It might not be a permanent solution. Caveats listed in the “Closed Caveats” section should not be present, and the workaround is unnecessary, as the version of code for which this release note is documented has resolved the caveat.

Open Software Caveats The latest information related to Open Caveats is available on Support site through the BugTrack search tool.
