Quick Sweep: Beginner Method Clear up a little space! We are going to start with some easy solutions to clean up the hard drive and get rid of any large files or programs that you do not need anymore. These solutions are more focused on freeing up storage space if you are running low. The techniques later in the guide focus more on the efficiency and speed of your MacBook.

1

Analyze Storage Usage First of all, let’s figure out where most of your storage is being used. You can check this by clicking the Apple menu on the top left corner of your screen.

Apple menu>About this Mac>Storage

You should be able to clearly see which type of files are hogging up most of your storage. If you think that any one category is taking up more than necessary, you can go into your Finder application and start deleting! Documents, Excel and Powerpoint files, downloaded content from the internet, and similar files will show up as the blue “Other.” The remainder are going to be located in their respective apps on your MacBook. For example, pictures and videos in the Photos app, any movies or music you have downloaded in iTunes or Spotify, etc. You can save old pictures and videos to external drives to open up some more space and do the same with files you no longer need readily accessible. Applications can take up a lot more space than you think, especially ones with graphics such as video games.

Summary 1. Apple Menu>About this Mac>Storage 2. Delete any unnecessary files or reduce certain categories of storage to appropriate levels that suit your preferences and needs.

Use Finder to Identify Huge Files Open the Finder app, then select the folder you wish to search through. Downloads, Applications, and Documents could be good places to start, or you can just search through “All My Files.” Click the circular settings button, then “Arrange By” and select size. If you see any large files that you do not need anymore, send them to the trash!

Summary 1. Finder>”All My Files”>Circular Settings Button> Arrange By>Size 2. Delete huge files you forgot about and no longer need!

Empty Trash Can You should always make a habit of emptying the trash can. When you delete a file, it is not removed completely from your computer and is still wasting memory. Right click (or CTRL click) on the trash icon to empty it, or open the Trash can and click the empty button in the top right corner.

Applications such as Photos, iMovie, and Mail all have their own trash cans as well, so empty these if you’ve deleted a lot of pictures, videos, or emails within those apps. CTRL/ Right click on the trash button in that specific application to empty the application’s trash.

Summary 1. Right click (or CTRL click) on the Trash application and select “Empty Trash”. 2. Clear the trash of applications such as Photos, Mail, and iMovie. 3. Open the app you wish to clear and right click or CTRL click the trash folder and select “Erase Deleted Items,” or “Delete All”.

4

Quit Applications Make sure you always quit applications when you are done using them. Having tons of applications open at the same time can cause your computer to lag.

Need for Speed: Advanced Method Tips to improve efficiency and speed if your MacBook is especially slow!

1

Keep Current with OS X

It is always a good idea to download the new OS whenever it is released. It is sometimes a good idea to wait until the beta version has been tested to make sure it is bug free before you install. Often times installing a beta version without backing up your hard drive first can lead to data loss if there is an error in the installation. Either way, it is a good idea to back up your data regularly and especially before applying any updates to make sure your data is secured. The OS updates often include performance enhancements and security improvements, in addition to some cool new features.

2

Browser Usage and Preference Not surprisingly, Safari has been proven to operate faster and more efficiently on MacBooks than Chrome or FireFox. Oftentimes this can be caused by the excessive use of Browser Extensions, given that there are so many available on Chrome.

Either way, it is a good idea to keep as few tabs open as possible and to only install the extensions that you need. Uninstall any extensions that you no longer use, as these can cause your browser to take up a lot of memory and tax your computer’s battery.
