No journalist ever got on the front page writing a story about how a disaster could be avoided. The media searches for doom because gloom makes headlines, sells newspapers and improves ratings.
7 Reasons To Be Optimistic: 1.
We’re Better Off Now Than Any Other Time In Recorded History: Compared with 50 years ago, the average human now earns 3X as much money, eats one third more calories, buries two thirds fewer children, and can expect to live one third longer.

We Have More Access To Human Innovations: Even allowing for the many people who still live in abject poverty, our generation has access to more: calories, watts, horsepower, gigabytes, megahertz, square feet, air miles, food per acre, miles per gallon, and money.

Worldwide Poverty is Nose‐diving: United Nations estimates that poverty has been reduced more in the past 50 years than in the previous 500 years. And much of that reduction has taken place in the last 20 years. Between 1980 and 2000, the poor doubled their food consumption and the percentage of the world’s people living in poverty has been reduced by 50% in less than 50 years.

Life Expectancy Across The World Has Risen Dramatically. We gain five hours of life expectancy every day — without even exercising! A third of all the babies born in the developed world this year will live to be 100.

The Important Survival Essentials Cost Less: One reason we are richer than ever before is that the four most basic human needs—food, clothing, fuel, and shelter—have grown markedly cheaper. Take one example: In 1800, a candle providing one hour’s light cost six hours’ work. In the 1880s, the same light from a kerosene lamp took 15 minutes’ work to pay for. In 1950, it was eight seconds. Today, it’s half a second. In these terms, we are 43,200 times better off than in 1800.

The World We Live In Is At Peace. This is a historical rarity. HERE IS THE DATA. The number of people who have died as a result of war, civil war, and, yes, terrorism, is down 50 percent this decade from the 1990s. It is down 75 percent from the preceding five decades, the decades of the Cold War, and it is, of course, down 99 percent from the decade before that, which is World War II.

In 2009, the H1N1 virus broke out in Mexico, and the trajectory of these kinds of viruses, quite conceivably could have spread like the Asian flu in 1957, in which 4,000,000 people died. But this time, the Mexican health authorities identified the problem early, shared the information with the WHO, learned best practices fast, tracked down where the outbreak began, quarantined people, and vaccinated others.
