Are You Recruiting

or Drafting? by Marlene Wilson

Greetings from the education ministry – we want you! Do your teachers and volunteers feel like they’ve been recruited or drafted? Do they work willingly or come kicking and screaming all the way?

Why Do Volunteers Quit? Research on volunteerism reveals some of the major reasons volunteers leave their posts: “I never knew what they wanted me to do; I didn’t even have a description of the job to be done.” “I didn’t know who was in charge, so I never knew whom to go to with questions, ideas or problems.” “They never provided any training to help me do what I was asked to do.” “Nobody ever told me if what I was doing was helpful or not.” “I was asked to do more and more and finally just burned out.”

Why Do People Volunteer? In order to keep volunteers happy and content in their enlisted positions, it’s important to know why they volunteered in the first place: • They want to be needed. • They want to help others and make a valuable difference in the lives of people. (continued on page 2)

Recruiting (continued from page 1) • They want to learn new skills or use skills they already have in a meaningful way. • They want to belong to a caring group of people and feel accepted by them as they work together. • They want to develop higher self-esteem and to receive affirmation for the job they perform. • They want to grow in their own personal faith and share their God-given talents with others. • They want to be involved with others to keep from being lonely. • They want to support and promote the cause of Christ in which they believe. On the other hand, people who are drafted

into service may say “yes” for quite a different set of reasons: • They feel guilty if they don’t. • They don’t want you to feel rejected or to have your feelings hurt. • They don’t know how to say “no.” • They don’t want to let you (God, Christ, the church) down. • They don’t want to look as if they’re not involved.

What Volunteers Need The needs of Christians who volunteer (or are drafted) must be met head-on by those in the leadership roles to prevent volunteers from burning out or draftees from going A.W.O.L. What volunteers have repeatedly said they want and need are: • to be carefully interviewed and appropriately assigned to a meaningful task;

The Effective Edge

How Christians Today Can Accomplish the Lord’s Work To glorify God in all we do is the ultimate goal of our existence; we were created for this purpose. Unfortunately, in many circumstances, the work of the church has been abandoned for the desires of the members. Scripture commands all members of the church to serve through the gifts provided by God. Learn how to combat selfishness and regain an effective edge as your congregation works together to accomplish God’s purpose.

• to receive training and supervision to enable them to do the job right; • to be involved in planning and evaluating the program in which they participate; • to receive recognition in a way that is meaningful to them; • to be regarded as persons of uniqueness; • to be accepted as a valued member of the team.

Forward, March! It’s important to get off on the right foot with your recruits. Before recruiting or drafting teachers, apply these criteria to you: (1) Have you designed a plan for your volunteer members with clear goals, objectives, and a suggested plan of action? (2) Have you prepared a good description of the duties, skills and the approximate time that will be required for each

Winter 2013 type of job for the program? (3) Have you devised a plan to match the right volunteer to the right job? Have you arranged interviews or meeting so that each volunteer may learn more about the program and so that you can learn more about his skills, needs and interests? (4) Have you planned ways to recognize the volunteer’s participation and dedication that will be appreciated?

What Can You Do to Encourage Your Teachers? • See a good-looking bulletin board in one of the classrooms? Attach a big “A+” and sign your name with a note of commendation.

3 • Have a small group of young teachers and the youth to your home for dinner. Let the students prepare and serve the meal. Then, let the students express appreciation to the teachers. • Be available in the halls before classes begin. Check with teachers to see if they need anything, compliment them, and listen to them. • Write a weekly bulletin article calling teachers by name and commending them for specific accomplishments in their classes. • Mail a devotional/inspirational book to each teacher on his/her birthday. Include a note of appreciation on the inside cover.

Ideas for Teacher Appreciation Month Make your teachers feel special and important with Teacher Appreciation Month: Week 1 – Have a sermon on teaching and present all teachers before the congregation for recognition. Week 2 – Give each teacher a “flower of appreciation” to wear that day. Week 3- Students/parents in each class present something special to their teachers. Week 4 – Host a Teacher Appreciation Banquet. ❏ Reprinted from TEACH, March/April 1985. Used by permission of Sweet Publishing Co., Hurst, Texas.
