The Value of Cloud Training

ORACLE CLOUD

eBook

Capture the Benefits of Cloud Training The journey to the cloud offers many benefits: a more efficient workflow, streamlined access and seamless data integration. However, moving to the cloud requires major changes to existing operations. This means that an enterprise can only realize the benefits of the cloud if its employees know how to use the new applications and apply the new processes, and this almost always requires new skills throughout the entire organization. End users must adapt. IT teams need to meet base requirements for business acumen, technical skills and vendor management in all roles and functions. You might think that the cloud is so much easier that it makes training redundant. That’s just not true. Training can deliver the specific skills that will allow enterprises to realize the full benefits of the cloud. Organizations that capture the benefits of cloud training will be better able to leverage all aspects of the cloud.

You might hear that the cloud is so much easier that it makes training redundant. That’s just not true.

How Will Skills Change With the Cloud? The transition to the cloud changes every part of the IT organization. And the business value of IT will be based on effective brokering, integrating, and orchestrating of IT services. Three of IDC’s predictions related to hybrid cloud, workload-centric management and DevOps organization illustrate the changes to traditional roles, and the challenges and opportunities faced by both end users and IT professionals.

Hybrid Clouds

80% 40%

More than 80% of Enterprise IT Organizations Will Commit to Hybrid Cloud Architectures by 2017, Increasing the Rate and Pace of Change in IT Organizations But only 40% of organizations who have implemented cloud report having the IT skills to use cloud to drive innovation, agility and competitive advantage.

With hybrid clouds, the IT organization will need to be able to design and orchestrate a full stack of services to support a rapid time to value of new applications and services. The skilled organization will be able to plan, build, and operate cloud services to reduce management complexity and lower operating costs. This will ultimately reduce risk, increase compliance, and deliver business value.

How Will Skills Change With the Cloud? Workload-Centric Management

60% 32%

By 2017, More Than 60% of Enterprise IT Organizations Building Hybrid Clouds Will Purchase New or Updated Workload-Centric Cloud Management Solutions However, just 32% of organizations have the skills to monitor, forecast and optimize server, storage and network resources dynamically.

Workload-centric management will reprioritize some of the skills required. In a workload-centric organization, staff members align with the workloads they serve. This results in a multidisciplinary team for each workload.

DevOps Matures

60% 33%

By 2018, Over 60% of New Apps Will Use Cloud-Enabled Continuous Delivery and Cloud-Native Application Architectures to Enable Faster Innovation and Business Agility Unfortunately, only 33% of IT organizations report having the skills to effectively leverage or deploy automation, self-service and orchestration tools.

DevOps management will change and reprioritize skills required in the IT organization. The cloud architect will need to understand both the development process and the operations process. Similarly, both the cloud administrator and the cloud database administrator will need to augment their skills to include identifying stakeholder requirements.

About the Author

End Users Need Training Too The goal of almost all business-related training isn’t simply to transfer skill or knowledge, but rather to get the learner to use that knowledge to adopt the new process or tool. This adoption is, at its core, a change management exercise. As such, user training is an excellent opportunity to reinforce the critical elements of change management to support adoption. These include: • The benefits to the enterprise and specific audiences. Understanding the expected vision for use of the cloud helps create shared expectations and a common purpose throughout the organization. •H ow processes or relationships are expected to change. While training often focuses on the new “to be” workflows, it is essential to bridge from the activities that the organization is leaving behind and to explain how the expected workflow differs from the prior workflow. • Target performance standards for groups and individuals. With every new process, individuals need to find ways to adapt. Combining training with change management elements creates a powerful, multi-dimensional state-of-the-art approach to effective user adoption.

About the Author

Recommendations Cloud and cloud-based applications may offer many benefits but are highly disruptive to existing processes. IDC analysis has determined that even small amounts of additional and continuous training can improve a team’s performance. The addition of just an hour of training per significant process or workflow over the course of a year can dramatically improve a team-member’s understanding of their role and the role of others on the team. IDC believes that with the dramatic increase in the use of technology for many roles, knowledge workers should get a minimum of 10 hours of job-role related training every year to remain current. And additional training is necessary when organizations are changing applications - like moving to cloud-based applications.
