P E OP L E : God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. L E A D E R : If we say that we have fellowship with God while we are walking in darkness, we lie and do not do what is true. But if we walk in the light as God Himself is in the light we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ, God's Son, cleanses us from all sin.

SILENCE

FOR REFLECTION AND SELF‑EXAMINATION

Almighty God, You dwell in holy light. Unprotected, we sinners perish before You.

Our hearts and minds are blinded by rebellion; we have loved sin’s darkness rather than Your holiness. We deserve nothing good from You, the holy God. Jesus Christ is the Light of the world, the light no darkness can overcome. For His sake we ask Your mercy for our thoughts, words and activities against You .

 Lamb of God, sin's deathly night is dispelled, for You have banned it. Lamb of God, we walk in light, free from death, for You command it. Let Your mercy still increase: Lamb of God, grant us Your peace! T UNE : “J ESUS S INNERS D OES R ECEIVE ” #304 CW

For Jesus’ sake, God declares all your sins have been forgiven. Go in peace. In Jesus Christ, we have heard the Lord’s Voice. We shall live for His glory.

 Thank the LORD; His praise proclaim! In our hearts new light is glowing. Tell His glory; bear His Name, to the world His mercy showing. To Christ Jesus glory be for His glad epiphany!

1. Jesus take us to the mountain where, with Peter, James and John, we are dazzled by Your glory, light as blinding as the sun, There prepare us for the night by the vision of that sight. 2. What do You want us to hear there that Your dear disciples heard? Once again the Voice from heaven says of the Incarnate Word: “Listen, listen, everyone; this is My beloved Son!” 3. What do you want us to see there that Your close companions saw? Your divinity revealed there fills us with the selfsame awe, clothed in flesh like ours You go, matched to meet our deadliest foe.

4. Take us to that other mountain where we see You glorified, where You shouted, "It is finished!” Where for all the world You died, Hear the stunned centurion: “Truly this was God’s own Son!”

I NSTRUCTION FROM G OD ’ S W ORD FOR L IFE R E S P O N S E : We, who have beheld Your glory, risen and ascended Lord, cannot help but tell the story, all that we have seen and heard, say with Peter, James, and John: “You are God’s beloved Son!” T HE LORD M OVES U S T O R ESPOND D EAR VISITORS , God does not force us to return offerings. But when we understand God’s gift of mercy, we just can’t help but give of ourselves. Especially in our day and age, we don’t want any guest to feel pushed to participate in this act of worship. Thank you for your gifts and presents, but even more, thank you for your presence in God’s Presence.

CONSECRATION AND CELEBRATION

EXACTLY IS GOING ON NOW?

Pharmacists want the best for those receiving the prescriptions from their physicians, to help and not to hurt them. We don’t think poorly of pharmacists for keeping prescription medicines away from those who might be harmed by them. In fact, such activity shows they respect and love the people they serve. Similarly, the LORD’s Supper is very powerful medicine for the soul. Jesus didn’t offer His holy supper to every believer in Jerusalem on the night He created it, they were publicly united with Him. Similarly we do not treat the LORD’s Supper as an over -the-counter medicine, offered commonly to everyone without a careful thought .

As fellow WELS or ELS members, please don’t hesitate to receive God’s prescription for your soul. If you want to discover more about this teaching and many others, please don’t hesitate to ask us. We would love to answer your questions. Let us introduce you to our pastor. He will be delighted to share more of what God says.

Beautiful Savior, King of creation, Son of God and Son of Man! Truly I’d love Thee, truly I’d serve Thee, Light of my soul, my Joy, my Crown. Fair are the meadows, fair are the woodlands, robed in flowers of blooming spring; Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer; He makes our sorrowing spirit sing. Fair is the sunshine, fair is the moonlight, bright the sparkling stars on high; Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer, than all the angels in the sky . Beautiful Savior, Lord of the nations, Son of God and Son of Man! Glory and honor, praise, adoration now and forevermore be Thine.

K EEP ON L ISTENING… . For more than 500 years, the Church has celebrated the Sunday known as the Festival of the Transfiguration. Luther’s pastor, Johannes Bugenhagen, and Veit Deitrich began the practice of celebrating Transfiguration between Epiphany and Lent. The word ―transfiguration―simply means a major change in form that exalts or glorifies. It refers to the account in the Gospel for today when Jesus shined forth in His heavenly glory as the Son of God. Jesus gave His disciples a glimpse of His glory because the cross was coming. Jesus left that mountain and headed to Jerusalem where He would suffer, die, and rise again for all mankind. This morning’s glimpse of glory teaches us that Jesus didn’t endure the cross because He was forced to. Jesus endured the cross because He chose to! Transfiguration Sunday ends the season of Epiphany. When we next meet it will be during the season of Lent, a time to pause and reflect on our Savior’s suffering. So on this day of Transfiguration, we sing our last Alleluias until the Day of Resurrection. Today we join in Peter’s cry ―It’s good, Lord, that we are here!

This Wednesday, February 10th, is Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is a section of the Church Year Calendar that is marked by a special call to repentance and renewal. This Lenten Midweek worship times we will ponder Passion matters that are not always what they appear to be. Sundays are not properly part of the Lenten season (hence the titles of Sundays in Lent, rather than Sundays of Lent). Sundays during the weeks before Easter serve as islands of refreshment” during the course of the season. In keeping with the emphasis that all Sundays are “little Easters”, on Sundays we will be living Lent, pondering God’s persistent pleas.
