Health Care Reform Update: New plans in 2014 Health care reform—also known as the Affordable Care Act (ACA)—is so complicated that parts of the law (or “provisions”) will take effect over eight years. New provisions roll out each year between 2010 and 2018.

What’s new in 2014? There are 16 provisions taking effect in 2014. Some of these provisions mean that you’ll have more options and pay less money. For example: ƒƒ Medicaid coverage is expanded and more people qualify for free or subsidized insurance ƒƒ New health insurance marketplaces (or exchanges) make it easier for individuals, families, and small businesses to find the right plan for them ƒƒ New regulations to cut down maximum out-of-pocket costs You can visit Kaiser Family Foundation’s website to read about all 16 provisions: http://kff.org/interactive/ implementation-timeline/

What does this mean for me? For many members, the 2014 provisions mean that your health insurance plan is changing. You will have new options, and you’ll probably save money. Your health insurance may be changing if you were a member of any of these plans in 2013: ƒƒ Commonwealth Care ƒƒ Commonwealth Choice for Individuals or Families ƒƒ Commonwealth Choice/Business Express for Employers (for selfemployed individuals or smallbusiness owners) ƒƒ MassHealth

MyNHP: A member portal that fits your life NHP Manager of Customer Service tells us why she’s excited about MyNHP—and why you should be too. Our Neighborhood recently sat down with Ramona Bourguignon, NHP Manager of Customer Service, to get the scoop on our new and improved member portal. “What’s really exciting about MyNHP,” she says, “is that members can manage their plan whenever it works for them. They’re not tied to regular Customer Service hours. Now our members can go online anytime, day or night, to do things like change their PCP or order a new ID card.” Members can also log on to MyNHP to see their copayments and review their member handbook. “MyNHP is personalized,” Ramona continues. “That means you don’t have to guess which materials apply to you. When you log in, you only see information about your plan. There’s no guessing.” So what’s next for MyNHP? Ramona offers a preview of upcoming tools. “We’re always making improvements. Soon you’ll be able to see your claims online.” This will be helpful for all members and especially those who have a deductible plan. Of course, as Manager of Customer Service, Ramona knows that sometimes our members just want to talk to a person. “Members can always call us. We can answer questions about your benefits or even help you get started with MyNHP. We’re here to help.”

Healthy Tip

Save time & money with Access90 If you take a medicine regularly, prescription copays can really add up. With the Access90 program, you can get 90-day supply of certain prescription medicines right in your local participating pharmacy— without multiple copays.

Is your medicine covered?

Members with diabetes are at greater risk for high blood pressure. If you have diabetes, you should ask your doctor to check your blood pressure at every visit.

Can Access90 really save me money?

Access90 covers medicines for asthma, acid reflux, arthritis, depression, diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and others.

Absolutely! Here’s an example: Without Access90 Daily medication with a $5 pharmacy copay = about $60 per year

Use the Drug Lookup tool on nhp.org to find out if your medicine is covered under the Access90 program.

With Access90 Daily medication with a $5 pharmacy copay = about $40 per year

Healthy tip Spring allergies can make it even harder to breathe if you have asthma. It’s important to use your controller medicines every day. When you pick up your prescription at your local participating pharmacy, be sure to ask your pharmacist how to use your controller medicine properly. 3

Breathe easier with our COPD program Our new COPD Care Management program helps members manage their COPD symptoms. Participating members will work one-on-one with an NHP Care Manager to do things like: ƒƒ Make sure they’re seeing their doctor regularly ƒƒ Get spirometry tests when they should ƒƒ Learn how to take any medications properly

Take this fast, five-question screener from the COPD Foundation and then talk to your PCP about your results: http://www.copdfoundation.org/ screener.aspx

What’s a spirometry test? A spirometry test measures how much air you can breathe in and out. During the test, you breathe into a tube that’s attached to a spirometry machine. Your doctor will review the results and talk to you about your COPD care plan.

Preventative benefits: colon cancer screenings and more

NHP covers checkups for new moms and their babies New moms should see their doctor 3-6 weeks after delivery. Babies should see their PCP for checkups and vaccinations at ages: ƒƒ 1 to 2 weeks ƒƒ 1 month ƒƒ 2 months ƒƒ 4 months ƒƒ 6 months ƒƒ 9 months ƒƒ 12 months ƒƒ 15 months ƒƒ 18 months

Older kids need checkups too! NHP also covers annual well-child checkups for children from age 2 through 21.

A colonoscopy is your best protection against colon cancer. A colonoscopy is a simple test that can show the early warning signs of colorectal cancer. Men and women should have a colonoscopy at age 50 and then every 10 years. Call your doctor or nurse to ask if you should have a colonoscopy.

Healthy Tip If you are over age 50, your PCP may recommend that you have screenings for: ƒƒ Colon cancer ƒƒ Breast cancer (mammogram) ƒƒ Cervical cancer Talk to your PCP about the screenings that are right for you.

Two programs to help keep your heart healthy In our Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) and Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) Care Management Programs, members can work one-on-one with a care manager to learn how to lead a healthier lifestyle and lower their chances of having a heart attack. A healthy lifestyle includes making good food choices, taking medications properly, and having the right tests throughout the year. Talk to your doctor today if you think you might benefit from the CAD or CHF Care Management Program. NHP has free one-on-one care management services for members with chronic diseases like diabetes and asthma and for expecting moms. If you have questions about these programs or any of our Care Management programs, call the number on the back of your NHP ID card. Ask to speak to a Care Manager. A Care Manager will call you back.

NHP member advisors help shape our services. Four times a year, management at NHP sits down with our two Member Advisory Committees to learn what our members are looking for in a health plan.

NHP and Partners HealthCare teamed up in 2012 to create the Partnership for Community Health. This program will give Massachusetts community health centers up to $90 million to make improvements. The funding will be released in rounds over the next 15 years.

“These are volunteers that represent our membership and devote some of their time to make services better for NHP members,” says Anne Grossi, who facilitates the Member Advisory Committees. Last year, our Member Advisory Committees helped out with important projects like naming new products, updating our website, and developing an enhanced provider directory.

$4.25 million in grants were awarded to 47 community health centers in 2013 during the first round of funding. This year, the Partnership for Community Health expects to award $6 million in competitive grants to community health centers for both individual and collaborative projects as part of the Excellence and Innovation Program.

NHP has two Member Advisory Committees. One committee is for members who buy their insurance through an employer or exchanges like the Health Connector. The other is for MassHealth or CommCare members. Our Advisory Committee members come from all parts of Massachusetts.

“We believe that community health centers are vital community assets,” said Deborah C. Enos, President and CEO of Neighborhood Health Plan. The Excellence and Innovation Program supports projects that aim to make improvements in efficiency or patient care.

“These volunteers are a valuable asset to the plan and to its members,” Anne says. “We thank them for all that they do!” If you are interested in joining a Member Advisory Committee, please call Anne Grossi 617-979-5815.

NHP supports community health

All members of the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers may apply for an Excellence and Innovation grant. Grants will be announced in spring of 2014.

Your PCP is your first stop for health care People who get to know their Primary Care Provider (PCP) are healthier and happier. Evidence suggests that people who see their PCP have better management of chronic diseases, spend less on health care costs, and are more satisfied with their care in general. Your PCP makes sure you get important preventive services like flu shots and cancer screenings. He or she can also help you manage chronic conditions like asthma, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Your PCP will work with your specialists to make sure your care plan is right for you. Because your PCP knows you and your medical history, you should call your PCP first when you get sick or injured. Regularly visiting a PCP helps you to look out for your health and well-being—not just for today—but also for the future. 5
