Outdoor Events Make For Great Networking Not all business can be done in the boardroom or from the confines of a cubical or office. Sometimes the best connections are made when you ditch the suit and tie or professional dress for something that best represents “business-casual”. We just finished up our 18th Annual Chamber Open Golf Tournament last week that had 284 golfers representing dozens of businesses at Tascosa Golf Club & La Paloma for some fun and friendly competition on a truly Chamber of Commerce kind of day. Special thanks to everyone who helped us put on what was our best event yet. Check out page 10 of this newsletter for the complete list of sponsors, and share, download or print photos from our online album at http://bit.ly/ChamberOpen2017Pics. We’re only 45 days away from our 22nd Annual Good Times Celebration® Barbecue Cook-Off on the Chamber Grounds on Thursday, September 14th. This event is by far our largest networking opportunity for businesses to connect with other businesses and the general public. We will have 100 cooking teams serving up mouthwatering barbecue and fixings to more than 6,000 people. Because it is a one-price-gets-it-all-ticket, people love the convenience and variety of food and beverages they can enjoy until they are stuffed. Advance tickets go on sale at any Panhandle Tickets outlet on August 4th for just $30 per person. At the gate, tickets will cost $40 each. If you had a cooking team in last year’s event, we hope you have already returned your signup packet to Andrea at [email protected]. If you weren’t in the event last year, you can check out what all is involved on our website at www.amarillo-chamber.org/barbecue-cook-off.html and download the packet directly from there. Keep in mind, space for this event is very limited. We opened up registration starting with our biggest event sponsors, followed by previous year’s sponsors, and finally new sponsor participants. If you have questions about this event, participating or volunteering, contact Andrea McClintock at 806.342.2007 or email her at the address above. Expect to have a “blast” at our 5th Annual Chamber Challenge Clay Shooting event at the Amarillo Gun Club on Saturday, September 23rd. Grab your best 5person team for a Ribbon Cuttings 2-3 half day of shooting New Members 3-4 fun with sporting clays, trap and skeet. Mayor Calls 4 We will be signing up teams for this event After Hours Networking 5 soon, but feel free to CVC News & PRIME Service 6-7 call or email Jason Harrison for information or to be on the list of participants or Renewing Members 8 sponsors at 806.342.2018 or [email protected] or visit our webpage at http://www.amarillo-chamber.org/ Chamber Open Sponsors 10 chamber-challenge-clay-shooting-event.html. Mayor Calls on Local Businesses The Chamber, Amarillo Economic Development Corporation and City of Amarillo Mayor, Ginger Nelson, are joining forces to make weekly personal visits to local businesses. The purpose of these short visits (typically around 45 minutes) is just to familiarize the three offices with these valuable economic engines that help drive our local economy and workforce. Starting in June, Chamber representatives Gary Molberg and Jason Harrison, Amarillo EDC President & CEO, Barry Albrecht, and Mayor Nelson made calls on Officewise Furniture & Supply, Southwest General Contractors, Northwest Texas Healthcare System, UniFirst Corp., and Townsquare Media. If you have questions about this program, contact Jason Harrison at 806.342.2018 or email [email protected]

Koben Puckett

Do you like helping others? Would you enjoy an evening full of action?

It’s that time of year, when I get to work with one of my favorite people in this area.

If you answered yes, sounds like you may want to drop by the Koben Puckett Invitational at the Will Rogers Range Riders Arena on Loop 335 and Washington. The gates open at 6 p.m. and the competition starts at 7:30 p.m.

By: Eric Miller, CVC Director of Communications

Koben Puckett I get to meet a lot of folks and I can say that I have enjoyed working with each one. But working with Koben is special. A young man from Canyon, he was making his way through the PBR circuit in the late 2000’s. He was a hot young rider with lots of potential. Since I don’t follow the PBR circuit, we may never have met except……we did.

Advance tickets are $17.50 or $20 at the gate. Purchase tickets and get more event details at www.kobenpuckettinvitational.com. My wife and I went last year and had a blast. We hope to be back there this year. Maybe we’ll see you there.

Koben was bucked from a bull and suffered a spinal cord injury. As part of his journey since the accident, he started a PBR event in Amarillo, one to raise money for other spinal cord injury victims. Through my office, I have been lucky enough to help him with each of his four events. Every year, his condition improves so his physical abilities are better. Always, his spirit to help others lifts me. His event raises money for the PressOn Foundation. In the last 12 months, that foundation helped four young people and their challenge to recover from spinal cord injury. Some of the best riders in the world will be in Amarillo on August 5 out of respect for Koben and his new dual role in life as a topnotch roughstock producer and an advocate for spinal cord injury victims. Don’t believe me? Then check out these two great pieces about Koben and his new life by members of the Amarillo media. Former ABC7 Amarillo anchor Larry Lemmons did a fine feature on Koben as part of his Panhandle Spirit series (https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=7iISjJ_dXwA). And freelance writer Jason Boyett captured Koben well in a piece for Amarillo Magazine (http:// amarillomagonline.com/article/1292). So, what are you doing on Saturday, August 5? Are you in town?

Congratulations to these Recent Prime Service Award Winners Members of the CVC’s Convention & Tourism Committee as well as other Chamber volunteers recently dropped in on the following businesses to deliver an AMA Prime Service lapel pin to these employees who provided someone with PRIME customer service. If you receive outstanding service at an area business, nominate that person for a Prime Service award. Just call the CVC office at 374-1497 or visit www.visitamarillo.com/about-amarillo/ primeservice/

Editor’s Corner

By: Penni Bentley, Senior Communications Director Direct: 806.342.2005 Cell: 806.674.7334 [email protected]

I live in the Belmar neighborhood. I drive Bell and cross the bridge at I-40 at least twice a day and have for the last 15 years. The creature of habit in me was on autopilot this morning when going to work then I remembered, I have to change course for my daily commute. Uggghhh. I suddenly found myself turning into an unfamiliar residential area looking for a new path and feeling a little confused and disoriented. The Facebook comments (really just complaints), memes and photos of backed up traffic recently got me thinking. I’ve lived in Amarillo since 1994, and have seen many changes in neighborhoods, shopping areas, and definitely downtown. As a kid in the 80’s from a little panhandle town, I remembered shopping at Western Plaza Mall and Colbert's for back to school clothes, and when Westgate Mall was built, it seemed like it was practically in New Mexico being that far at the edge of town. That seems like a million years ago, but seems a little bit like just last week. When I was running the Visitor Information Center inside the Civic Center from 2003-2006, the view across the parking lot to the west was pretty bleak. Watching the Globe-News Center go up during that time was truly an amazing sight. And the change in the last 2 years in the downtown landscape is nothing short of amazing when you think about the run-down buildings or parking lots that used to occupy that area. Does it slow traffic down on Buchanan and make for a longer commute to Civic Center events right now? Yes. But it won’t be that way forever. And we’ll be left with something pretty amazing that will bring more people into our community (opening up their wallets) when it’s all said and done. The Amarillo Globe-News just ran a story with a map of all of the road closures going on in town. Yes...the list is pretty long. But look at the big picture. Although a hassle at times, construction means growth. It means building for the future. It means that an investment is being made in Amarillo, its people and its businesses because our community, city and state leaders believe in a long and prosperous future.

We’re on Mix 94.1 every Tuesday at 8:30am to talk about the week's events, conventions & newest members. It’s the most jam-packed three-minute segment. If you miss it live, you can always check out the video recap with more information on our YouTube Channel, Facebook page or on the Week’s Sneak Peek page on our website.

That bridge at I-40 was originally constructed in the 60’s. Things get old and wear out, and for safety reasons, you have to repair them. The world doesn’t stop while that’s being done, so it will be annoying for a few months. I’m trying to look at this little detour as a great opportunity to drive down a different road every day and look for the beauty in the journey. When was the last time you took in the scenery in your own town instead of staring at the bumper of the guy doing 60 down the highway in front of you? It’s okay to slow down a little or leave a few minutes of wiggle room in your schedule so you don’t find yourself frustrated and road-raging. Life’s too short. Maybe give our city leaders, city workers, and state highway department a break every now and then. Their job probably isn’t as fun as yours. As always, tell us how we are doing. Give us your suggestions, feedback, and input. Feel free to write on our Facebook wall. Get involved. We are proud to be YOUR Chamber.
