GUIDE TO COLLEGE TENNIS The Fall

The Spring

•September through November •Individual play only in flighted tournaments usually consisting of one to four divisions •Flight placement is based on talent level as well as talent level of the competition •Singles and doubles records count towards an individual’s overall career records, as well as a player’s national ranking for the remainder of the academic season

•Dual matches played in the spring •Matches played indoors in January and February •Matches played outdoors starting in March, weather permitting •The Conference USA Championship determines the conference champion and an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament

Dual Match Rules

Points •First player to four points wins the game •Love is the score of zero in a game •15 is equivalent to one point, 30 to two and 40 to three •No-ad scoring in college tennis (when a game goes to deuce [40-40 or three points-all], the returner chooses which side of the court to return from and whoever wins that sudden death point wins the game

Games •The first doubles team or singles player to six games wins the set (must win by two) •If the set score reaches six games-all, a tiebreaker is played to determine the set winner •In the tiebreaker, players receive one point for each point won. The winner is the first to seven points (must win by two)

Sets •In doubles, only one set per match is played •In singles, the winner has to win two out of three sets •Sometimes in singles if two opponents split the first and second set, a 10-point tiebreaker is played to determine the winner (players receive one point for each point won; first to 10 points, win by two)

•Lineup consists of three doubles positions and six singles positions •Typically, the No. 1 position is considered to be the best singles player or doubles pair on the team, and so on down the lineup •Seven team points awarded in a match: one in doubles and six in singles •No-ad scoring in both singles and doubles (when a game goes to deuce, the next point wins); tiebreak at 6-all •Doubles played first (first team to six games win by two) •The team that wins two out of three doubles matches wins the first point in the match •Singles played after a 10 minute intermission (two out of three sets) •The winner in each singles match earns a point towards the final team score •A team clinches the victory with four points •Clinch/Clinch: When the doubles point is clinched, the remaining doubles match will be stopped. When a team clinches the victory (has four points), the remaining matches will be stopped. Coaches can meet prior to the match and agree to play out the remaining matches after a team has already clinched the victory.
