If the crowds seen here in last year’s March for Jesus are an indication, then the upcoming June 21 March should be a huge success.

A miraculous reunion after 53 years of being apart by Denise Hill When Joan and Bruce were very young, they had a baby boy on March 19, 1958. Because of family pressure and no means of providing for him, Malcolm Bruce McCullough was given up for adoption. Stories circulated and Joan was told that he died, but in her heart of hearts, she knew this was not the truth. Joan and Bruce married several years later and went on to have three more children – two sons (Shaun and Devon Hill) and a daughter who died in infancy. Fast forward to 2010 when Devon, the youngest son, had a strong desire to find his blood brother. He called Joan to discuss the idea to which she heartily agreed. As the birth mother, Joan had to start the process by completing government documents. On Friday, January 22, 2011 Joan received a package which provided Malcolm’s full name – Robert Gregg Neden. Joan phoned her daughter-in-law to tell her what she had received, and Lynne immediately placed the name in Google. His name came up and much to her surprise, he was living in northwest Calgary, about 15 minutes from her house. Lynne called his number, Gregg was home

the end of March where she met with Gregg the day and he and Lynne had an emotional discussion. The following day the three brothers met at the home after she arrived. Words cannot describe what emotions of Shaun Hill. They talked non-stop for about four hours, she experienced! When Bible apps began to appear in the App Store and the Android Market, very few would have predicted the rapid growth and quick acceptance of the technology by millions within the faith community and beyond. According to a news release from Audio Bible Ministry Faith Comes By Hearing (FCBH), with the success of apps like YouVersion, Olive Tree and FCBH’s Bible.is, the way people access God’s Word has been dramatically transformed. Because of the por tability of the devices the apps run on, people can carry their Bible with them. The audio is key for those doing Great Commission work across the globe according to Morgan Jackson, the international director at Faith Comes By Hearing.

the womb.” “We were told you may have to sacrifice one baby to save two,” noted Dara. “As a mother, that’s nothing you ever want to hear. So we just prayed, ‘God, take that option away.’” Doctors delivered the babies, but told the McMillins that their chance of survival was less than one per cent. The report also noted that when the triplets were about 8-weeks old, they were diagnosed with a severe form of pre-mature eye disease that carried a 95% risk of blindness. An experimental therapy was used and to everyone’s surprise, it worked. Said Dr. Mark Scott: “It’s the closest thing to a miracle I’ve ever seen. I injected a medicine and in 24 hours, the disease was essentially gone. It’s a disease that uniformly causes blindness in children. The babies are now home with their parents, the beginning “of three lifetimes of answered prayers.”

nated from his body.” According to a CBS San Francisco report, 45-year-old Timothy Ray Brown – who had tested positive for HIV in ‘95 – was living in Berlin in 2007, also dealing with Leukemia, and was given a bone marrow stem cell transplant. The transplant he received was from a person who was immune to the HIV virus. “I quit taking my HIV medication the day that I got the transplant and haven’t had to take any since,” remarked Brown, who is known to scientists as the

“Berlin Patient.” He added that he’d been “cured” of HIV. Doctors warned, however, that a bone marrow transplant is not for everyone, and it’s difficult to find a matching donor. Researchers say about one per cent of Caucasians are immune to the virus. Still, the fact that Brown’s “functional cure” as doctors are calling it, has now been documented in scientific journals is a sign of hope to those who suffer from the deadly virus worldwide.. Especially for children who’ve been born with it.

CITY LIGHT NEWS, JUNE 2011 — 3

Through a Glass, Darkly

That reminds me of a story... by Peter McManus When I became a Christian so many years ago, I was among some of the world’s best end-time experts. Or so they thought. Some of you can remember Chargex as a credit card, and the jingle “Will that be Cash or Chargex?” I vividly recall the transition of the banks changing over to the name Visa. Those of us who thought we were more deep and spiritual, tried and tried to connect the word Visa to the mark of the beast. It was only logical. With the Roman numerals “V” and “I” formulating the number 6, surely the “S” and the “A” had to be representative of 66. That was a long time ago, and we could never make it add up! This same group of fellows would go around and convince us of just how spiritual they were. If I was reading the Book of Luke, they would look down their nose at me and explain that they were in the Book of Isaiah, or deeper yet, the Book of Ezekiel. Then there was all the discussions on the end-times and whether one was pre-tribulation, mid-tribulation or post-tribulation. What was my position, they would ask? All I could do was give a blank stare and wonder if they were still on drugs that we had all been set free from. Of course, the talk would invariably wander over to heavier matters, such as whether you were an Amillennialist or a Pre-millennialist. When asked, I had that same stupid look on my face and decided then and there that if the great theologians of the world were still in debate over such doctrines, then how was I, a hippie fresh off the street, going to make an informed decision? I made my mind up that I was going to be a Pan-millennialist — it would all pan out in the end. Now 40 plus years later there are still those out there who seem to think they know what’s happening concerning end times. Like the group who put up billboards around the country saying Jesus would be returning May 21. As of the printing of this paper, that will be in a couple of days. If you’re reading this and I’m not to be found, then you can assume the rapture has taken place and you’re on your own. If, on the other hand, you phone me up and I answer the phone and you noticed there wasn’t a mass exodus of Christians throughout the land, then rest assured, Jesus didn’t fulfill their predictions. Again! Don’t get me wrong. I believe He will return some day, but not just yet. I believe there’s still too much left for us to do. Besides, it wouldn’t fit with my eschatology. I happen to believe the Bible where Jesus said, “No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.”

4 — JUNE 2011, CITY LIGHT NEWS

by Tim W. Callaway

“Justice delayed is justice denied” – a legal maxim, the source of which is debatable Issuing a mea culpa (= my bad) is never easy. Trust me; I have much experience with this. It was necessary to do precisely that after recently penning something here that proved inappropriate. I don’t find it enjoyable to have to select “eat crow” on any menu. Nonetheless, all of us - and I mean ALL of us – do well when we acknowledge wrongdoing or wrong-speaking and make haste to make reparations. It’s a pattern of behaviour in which people and institutions that represent faith communities should be pace-setters and to which we also should hold accountable people and institutions that represent authority in our society. That’s why the Royal Canadian Mounted Police would be wise to demonstrate some ownership with respect to the recent acquittal of Calgarian Jason Nixon, his son Markus, and their colleagues Earl Anderson and Gary Cape. All were wrongly charged more than two years ago with shooting a pregnant wild horse near Sundre. As most readers know, in late April the Crown withdrew all charges against these four upon revelation that two former clients of Mountain Aire Lodge, a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center operated by Calgary’s Mustard Seed Street Ministry, had concocted a false story in an effort to claim a $25,000 reward. To be fair, I readily acknowledge that not only are police officers as human as the rest of us but that they consistently operate in high-stress environments. I once wrote an article for Alberta Report regarding the plans of Calgary Police Service constables Kevin McInnes and Jim Amsing to establish a place of refuge for stressedout cops. The toll the job takes on personnel is profound. Although a retreat centre has yet to become a reality, Diakonos Retreat Society has acquired a house where officers under duress can make a getaway. Further, as a pastor I have had sufficient involvement

with domestic strife, mental illness, shattered relationships and so forth to appreciate why police at Sundre were eager to close the books on a case that’s involved the death of numerous wild horses over several years. That being said, it is necessary to point out that abundant evidence exists that all is not well in RCMP circles and has not been for too long now. Here are just a few recent incidents where the judgments and actions of officers have proven questionable. The scandal concerning constable Mike Ferguson and the shooting of Darren Varley at Pincher Creek in October 1999. The convoluted testimony of four RCMP officers at the Braidwood inquiry following Polish immigrant Robert Dziekanski’s death by taser at Vancouver’s airport in October 2007. Perjury charges were recently laid related to that debacle. The ongoing controversy surrounding William Elliott’s tenure as the first civilian RCMP Commissioner. Recent charges against three Kamloops Mounties arising from an incident last year where they are accused of watching two women engage in sex in a jail cell. Federal prosecutors have sharply criticized the RCMP’s investigation regarding a freighter carrying illegal immigrants that arrived off the west coast in 2009. I reiterate that there are thousands of police officers who daily serve this nation with integrity and class. Thank God for them and may God protect them! Nevertheless, I believe it is incumbent on those wielding power that are capable of destroying reputations, jobs, bank accounts and innocent lives to make haste to acknowledge their mistakes and demonstrate some responsibility for an injustice. With respect to the case involving Jason Nixon and friends, I respectfully exhort the RCMP officers involved to “fess up” and “come clean.” You might just discover how rewarding a “mea culpa” can be for all concerned. Tim invites your thoughts on this situation at justkeeponasking@ gmail.com.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR We want to hear from you. Please send us your thoughts and opinions. Email us at: [email protected] or fax us at 403-640-2000.

Dear Editor,

Is Allah the Name of God? Allah is the name of the only god in Islam. Allah is a name that pre-dates Islam by centuries and is derived from the compound Arabic word Al-ilah, which means ‘the god’; Al (the) ilah (deity, or god). (Encyclopaedia Britannica, Allāh, Arabic: God) the one and only god in the religion of Islam. Etymologically, the name Allah is probably a contraction of the Arabic al-Ilāh, ‘the god’.) The word Al-ilah is a non specific title for whatever god of the time was considered the highest god, or ‘the god’. Different Arab tribes over the years have used Allah to refer to their personal high god. Allah was being worshipped at the Kaa’ba in Mecca by Arabs prior to the time of Mohammed. It was formerly the name of the chief god (Hence ‘the god’ or ‘Allah’) among the numerous idols (about 360, all with corresponding names) in the Kaaba in Mecca before Mohammed made them into monotheists. Historians have shown that the moon god called Hubal (the origins of the ‘Crescent Moon and Star’ as the symbol for Islam-Allah) was married to the sun god Shemesh/ Shepesh (the stars or star placed in the centre of the crescent shape-were their children.) Mohd Elfie Nieshaem Juferi, an Islamic scholar, states that Hubal was the god to whom Arabs prayed at the Kaa’ba, and that they used the name Allah and not Hubal when they prayed. Today, a Muslim is one who submits to the god Allah. As a matter of fact, the word Islam is itself derived from Arabic and means peace, purity, submission and obedience. We can see that Islam means submission to

(Allah), but originally it meant the strength of a warrior who would fight to the death for his people. (Dr. M. Baravmann, The Spiritual Background of Early Islam, E. J. Brill, Leiden, 1972) Many believe the word Allah was derived from the middle- eastern word El which in Ugaritic, Canaanite and Hebrew can mean a true or false God. Simply, this is not true; the source of this (Allah) goes back to pre-Muslim times. Allah is not a common name meaning God (or a god), and the Muslim must use another word or form if he wishes to indicate anything other than his own deity. (Encyclopaedia of Religion and Ethics (ed. Hastings), I: 326.) According to the Encyclopaedia of Religion, Allah corresponded to the Babylonian god Baal, and Arabs knew of him long before Mohammed worshipped him as the supreme God. The Arabs recognized many gods and goddesses, and each individual tribe had their own special god or special deity that they worshipped. Allah was the god of the local Quarish tribe, of which Mohammed was born into, Allah, was then known as the Moon god, who had three daughters with the sun god (Shemesh/ Shepesh). Their names were Al-at, Al-uzza, and Al-Manat, which were three goddesses; the first two daughters of Allah had names which are the feminine forms of Allah. Hubal was the chief god of the Kaaba among the other 360 deities. Hubal was a statue likeness of a man whose body was made of red precious stones whose arms were made of gold. (Find Islam, George Braswell Jr.) Sincerely, Jason Anders Calgary, AB

W

e are living in a time in history unlike any other. The pace of change is not only rapid, it is accelerating, and with it our lives are being exposed to more information in a day than our ancestors had to cope with in a lifetime. So many areas of our lives are being challenged that even our social containers are being threatened. Whether that social container is our family, our intimate friends, our community, our city, or our nation. In an hour when there is a desperate cry in our hearts for fresh vision, we in fact are feeling quite “un-visionary” and far more vulnerable. Many individuals have abandoned their long-term dreams for the life they once believed was possible, to simply doing their best to just get through the current day. Many have arrived at adulthood in this hour in which we live only to discover that their youthful expectations of what life would be like when they got here no longer are possible. Their hearts wrestle with whether or not their dreams are even realistic, let alone achievable. Some have even chosen that the best route is to downsize their youthful dreams to fit what they feel is a diminished adult experience. For all too many adults, the world they once dreamed of, the world their grandparents and parents promised would be there waiting when they grew up, has disappeared. However, change doesn’t have to be emotionally freighted in our minds as being so intense that we lose our bearings, our core values, our moral compass, our sense of direction, and our sense of destiny. There still exists the possibility of detaching from the driven-ness that has become such a part of the current culture, and actually finding the ability to slow down to the speed at which one’s life is intended to be lived. In fact, the old adage may be truer than ever: the more things change, the more they remain the same. While technology has changed, and has had an impact on the way we function in our lives, the same sun that rose and set over our ancestors for millennia still rises and sets over us. Generations move through their rites of passage again and again, and the wind continues on its circular path across the globe day after day, week after week, month after month, and season after season. Perhaps there are things our ancestors knew, believed, lived by, and taught succeeding generations, that somehow we in the 21st century need to bring to remembrance. While we tend to live life these days on autopilot, albeit unconsciously moving through the routines of our daily existence as if under the hypnotic trance of time itself, within our deep hearts there has been placed the awareness of the timeless, the presence of the eternal. An ancient king, once considered the wisest person who ever lived, named Solomon, claimed that eternity was in the heart of humanity, and placed there by Divine design to provide each and every individual with the opportunity to live life from a place of deep knowing: a deep knowing of one’s relationship to the Divine, one’s relationship to oneself, and one’s relationship to others. When alienated from any one of these we are alienated from all of them. That alienation then drives us to prove our value, prove our worth, and more often than not, to be driven by our unmet needs as opposed to being led by timeless values. That drivenness only serves to deepen our sense of alienation and separation, causing us to feel less and less connected, resulting in settling for less, when all the while our hearts are crying out for more. Within that intricate web of relationship to God, oneself, and others, each individual can find their greater sense of purpose, embrace the unfolding of life as a quest, a journey, a grand adventure, and achieve their grand and vital design. The ancients believed that the eye was the lamp of the body. They held to the notion that if the eye was single,

www.calgarychristian.com

undivided, then the whole person, body, soul, spirit, would live from an enlightened place. If on the other hand, the eye was fractured, diseased, malignant, resulting in double or fractured vision, then everything within an individual would be dark, and indeed deeply dark. The eye for our predecessors was the agent of illumination, the agent of enlightenment. In fact, the eye, was what illumined what was within the soul and projected it out. In other words, the eye did not function from their viewing point as an organ that merely took information in, the eye projected information out. So then, the eye, when single and undivided, projected a wholeness, an integration, from within that would be then seen without. It caused them to understand at a profound level that we do not see the external world as it is, we see the external world as we are. The metaphor of the single eye speaks to the genuine and desperate need of this current hour. Someone once said, “internal integrity leads to external integration.” Integrity, comes from the Latin word “integra” which means “whole.” None of us arrives in adulthood without some wounding to our souls. All of us have places of incongruence and disharmony and disease that needs to be addressed by the time we arrive at the place called “being all grown up.” Those internal incongruities cause “double-vision,” fractured vision, malignant vision, so that we project onto reality what is in fact our internal reality. We live with constant struggles within ourselves, refusing to reconcile the disparate parts of ourselves, and embrace the process of the integration of our internal world that leads to remarkable occurrences of possibility in the external world that up until that point were not available to us. Becoming single of eye is a process that requires a ruthless honesty with ourselves, God, and others, that leads to arriving at a place where there are no enemies within, rather all things within are functioning as allies towards one grand and vital design. When that experience of internal integrity is recognized and embraced, things in the external world that seemed to resist coming together for our benefit, all of a sudden fall in line. In fact all the lines in our external world begin to fall together for us in pleasant places. Our yearnings and desires no longer fettered by the nagging drivenness of unmet needs, arise from deep within and meet meaningful coincidences in the outside world. In other words, synchronicity, and even clusters of synchronicities begin to occur in the external world because things have come together in our internal world. Those meaningful coincidences begin to show up in our lives by virtue of the unforced rhythms of grace, gifts from God, intended to confirm that we are headed in the right direction, to establish our feet in the way of peace (even in seasons where it seems as if there is war all around us), strengthen our awareness of our identity, and because of being strengthened in our identity (knowing who we are), it further establishes in us our unique destiny. In actual fact, when you operate from a place of internal integrity, and begin to see things as they truly are, you discover that your identity, who you truly are, is your destiny. Not only that, you discover you have embarked on the timeless quest that every generation at some point wrestles with: that it is intended that we be both “being” and “becoming” at the same time. That process is unending, and repeats itself through every stage and chapter of life. Who you are becoming in this season is more than who you were in a former season, and you are growing and developing at a pace unique to your vital design. So regardless of the hectic pace of the needs-driven culture around you, detach from the illusion that comes from living life on auto-pilot, the result of having fractured, double, and malignant vision. Become single of eye, embrace the process that leads to internal integrity, and then see a world you have never seen before, that was always there waiting for you to wake up.

Does history matter? by Brian Rushfeldt, Executive Director Canada Family Action Coalition

D

oes it matter what Canadian history records about the influence of Christian principles on hospitals, education, social services, freedoms, even governance and law? When I asked a 17 year old lad what he was being taught in school about government, MPs, how people get elected and what roles different branches of government play, he astonished me with his reply: “Not much.” He had little knowledge of the Canadian political system, let alone our true history. I wondered – if I knew nothing of our Christian history, would I be engaged in trying to defend or promote that moral foundations are key to any civil society; that freedom must be exercised, or that we need a renewal in justice in our so-called justice system? Or would I blindly follow the humanistic social engineers into individualism and selfishness and secularism? Loss of our history aids the erosion of civilized values of family, morality, honesty, hard work, welfare for the truly needy, and the content of our increasingly socialistic and humanistic public education system. Can you imagine if you want to go to Ottawa but you forget where you are right now, what route would you take? In Canada we have lost our historical references to the Christian roots of honesty, morality, justice, family, law and education. We have public education because a Christian believed that every person should have full access to education, a noble and loving foundation. Many hospitals were founded because Christians believed in the need to care for the sick. At one time, most social services were performed by Christians, financed by the church community. Marriage was considered a bulwark of safety for women and children. Family was the first place of “schooling” and socialization for children. Our laws and ideals of justice were rooted in a truth of something greater than one’s own interests and concerns. Not long ago, some judges were appointed not because they were lawyers trained in law, but based on their godly character, integrity, and understanding of a just society. The church still has a critical role to play in all things. Some church leaders think that it is unbiblical that they and their followers engage in social action if government is at all involved. One U.S. churchman said, “When the church invests time, money and energy in political causes we waste our resources.” I wonder if he would have made that statement to Jesus when Jesus confronted religious and political leaders about law and social structure. Some church leaders really must get clarity on the difference between a political cause and a salt and light Kingdom cause. If we are to engage in asking for better laws to protect children from sex predators or laws that would prevent white collar crime or prevent scammers from preying on vulnerable elderly citizens – would that be a political cause? It is rather difficult to have laws made or changed without engaging the lawmakers, in other words, the MPs in government. We could perhaps file court actions but of course the court is a branch of government, so again, some would describe that as political. In Matthew 23, Jesus rebuked the religious leaders and called them hypocrites for thinking they were spiritual by tithing while neglecting what He called, “the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness.” Our history, if one chooses to learn it, shows that Christians engaged in everything from exploring Canada to settling it, to governing it. And all had a vision of a just and righteous society, and actively serving to help see that come to pass. Forget not the influence of our Christian forefathers.

Guilty until proven innocent a travesty

W

hen Pat Nixon’s son Jason was charged with killing a wild horse, it sent a shock wave through the Mustard Seed organization, and the wider Christian community in Calgary. Unfortunately, Jason was found guilty until recently proven innocent in the court of public opinion. Worse, the entire Nixon family was found guilty until proven innocent – by the Christian community. This was a travesty. Jason Nixon, two other men, and Nixon’s then 12-year-old son were charged in January 2010 with willfully killing a pregnant horse and careless use of a firearm in April of 2009. As reported by Licia Corbella in the Calgary Herald, May 4, upon arrest, Jason was unnecessarily forced to the ground and handcuffed in front of his children. Subsequently, he lost his job as the manager of the Mustard Seed’s Mountain Aire Lodge rehab facility near Sundre. Jason had to pay his own legal costs, proceeded to lose his home, his reputation, his confidence in the police, and likely, a piece of his soul. All charges against Jason Nixon and the others have been dropped as the story provided by crack addict to the RCMP proved to be a ruse to collect the reward money. While the incompetence of the RCMP who handled the case is deeply troubling, the way the Christian community responded to the allegations and criminal charges was even more troubling. So much for standing by each other through trials. Like Peter at the fireside, when confronted about his relationship to Christ, there were some in the Calgary Christian community whose response regarding Pat Nixon, and Jason Nixon was, “We never knew them.” The Nixon family has demonstrated remarkable

sacrifice and leadership in founding and expanding The Mustard Seed and its ministries to thousands of homeless, poor and hurting people for the past 26 years. Their profound courage, boldness in advocating for the poor, and their effectiveness in setting up an organization which is a shining beacon of social service in this city, is commendable and inspiring. Yet suddenly, they were swiftly “thrown under the bus” as soon as there was a hint of scandalous and baseless criminal charges. Why was this? Is it because some Christian leaders are too cowardly to stand up for fellow Christians and would rather wash their hands of them, publicly and privately, lest they too be tainted by association? Is it because some people in the Christian community were quick to jump to the conclusion that in spite of the integrity of the Nixon family, they must be guilty because the RCMP thought so? Did it never dawn on these people that because of their remarkable life-transforming work, the Nixon family might be under attack and needed support not condemnation? Is it because Christian organizations and their boards would rather believe the worst of a Christian leader than the best? If so, why has this kind of cancerous cowardice and cynicism overwhelmed people who should have responded with courage and support? Indeed for many who have served in Christian ministries, churches and Christian non-profits, the sad but undeniable truth is that the body of Christ can beat you up just as readily as the secular community. In fact, more readily. The truth is, it hurts a lot more, and the spiritual scars run very deep and last a long, long time. They can

dramatically affect the children and teenagers in the homes of those leaders, for a lifetime. To be abandoned by people you have worked alongside, who you believed cared deeply about you, trusted you, wanted the best for you, and who have supported you, prayed with you and for you in the past, is a soul-destroying experience. Yet it is all too common among those who have been in leadership in Christian communities. Correction, for people who believed they were serving in “communities,” who discovered the reality of true Biblical community, unfortunately, is sometimes a sham. There are thousands of these walking wounded former Christian pastors and leaders in our midst. Chances are you know a few of them. These are people who know that the Bride of Christ wears a dirty dress. Our hope is that someday, she will be presented spotless. In the May 4, 2011 Calgary Herald story, Jason commented on how he has survived this nightmare: “Through this all, I’ve really learned who my real friends are and just what a total, total blessing my family is and how important my faith is. Jesus never left my side. I know He has a plan for my life. I just hope it doesn’t include this much pain. But we did the right thing that night. We may have saved some lives. That’s a comfort.” Meanwhile, the Nixon family will move on and recover because their faith has been tested, and though the courage and integrity of some in the Christian community has been tested in this incident and found sadly wanting, fortunately the founder of the Nixons’ faith has not. Live Blood Analysis reveals much about the state of your health

Making life livable — Par t four The Bible says that life is in the blood. Naturopath/ Phytotherapist Robert Kish believes this wholeheartedly. The first thing he does on your initial visit is to look at your blood through a very powerful fibre-optic microscope and monitor. This is called a live blood analysis or microscopy. “Live blood analysis is a simple non-invasive procedure for obtaining a quick and accurate assessment of your blood,” Kish said. “With only a sample, taken virtually without pain from your finger, we gather it on a new sterile slide, cover it with a new sterile glass cover slip to seal it from the air, dust, etc., place it under the microscope and magnify it 40,000 times.” “This test is able to provide a composite of numerous aspects from your live blood,” he added, “including the state of your immune system, free radical damage, possible vitamin deficiencies, amount of toxicity, pH and mineral imbalances, areas of concern and weakness, parasites, fungus and yeast. A lot of guess work is eliminated.” “We can see such issues as poor digestion, liver, kidney, bowel, gall bladder stress, hormone imbalance, plaque, poor circulation and more,” Kish noted. “We discuss the optimal food, exercise, and vitamins to improve what we see.” Live Blood Cell Microscopy was developed and taught by Doctor Gunther Enderlein (1872-1968), a major world pioneer of the field of biochemistry, the study of pathogens and disease, and darkfield microscopy. This approach is regarded by many experts as the most advanced and reliable in the field. To a highly trained practitioner like Robert Kish, the blood’s condition can provide some valuable clues about

the patient’s general health and may suggest areas for further study and follow-up testing. However, live blood cell analysis is not a formal medical diagnostic test and is for research only. “This test is different from the blood tests ordered by physicians,” Kish said, “because it is a live sample, where we are looking for parasitic activity, yeast growth, bacterial growth, clumping of cells, etc; anomalies that are not typically ordered in blood testing using the traditional method. By doing the testing live, and sealing off the oxygen, we are able to see clumping of red blood cells, parasites, etc.” “Darkfield microscopy now allows us to observe multiple vitamin and mineral deficiencies, toxicity, tendencies toward allergic reaction, excess fat circulation, liver weakness and arteriosclerosis,” said Kish. “There are 450 different things to look for,” he added, “Your blood has many stories to tell.” “Clean blood facilitates the delivery of nutrients and the removal of waste at the cellular level thereby preventing illness and enhancing wellness,” Kish said. “Many people are experiencing less than ideal health and desire more physical and mental energy.” “Indications related to the causes of health imbalances are clearly demonstrated when analyzing the blood allowing one to objectively see the truth about the health of our cells,” he observed. “Often people are anxious about knowing their true state of health because it means making diet and lifestyle changes.” Kish, genuinely interested in the health of people, continues to study and research to update his knowledge on the newest research technologies and test results of nutrition and how it affects disease along with the newest test

results on the use of alternative therapies. “What we are suggesting is that by analyzing your blood, we will educate you on what we see and suggest a personalized program,” Kish continued. “This program could consist of body cleansing to rid your body of toxins, nutrition adjustments, vitamins, mineral and herbal supplements, so that you can tolerate your ailments easier, and/or become healthier the natural way. These are required in today’s environment because of pollution, depletion of soil minerals, and altered foods due to genetic engineering and additives to almost everything.” “We know that working in this field is God’s will for us,” said Margo, Kish’s wife and co-worker. “We asked Him to be very specific in what He wants us to do. He makes things happen in a way that makes it impossible to turn around or do anything else.” The Kishes can look back on the help they’ve provided and feel good about it. “Oh yes,” smiled Kish, “some of the people who came to us for help had been in the hospital for days and no solutions were found to alleviate their problems and within a few days we’ve been able to get them on the road to recovery. We’ve got files and folders of people with serious issues where their situations have improved…some dramatically.” “We say, ‘Thank you Lord,’ for everything that’s happened.”

Being a good neighbour can actually save you money! by Alex Golin In my last article, I wrote that I was going to share with you 21 ways that either yourself or your organization could save money. Well, here it is – the first piece of advice that will save you a lot of dough: BECOME FRIENDS WITH YOUR NEIGHBOURS! How is this going to save me money, you may ask? Well I’m here to tell you that not only is it appropriate for us to build relationships for spiritual reasons (see Romans 13:9), but it has great practical implications as well. Whether your neighbour happens to be in the apartment across the hall from you, the homeowner down t h e block, or the other church in your neighbourhood, each of them can help you (and you can help them) save money! The difficult part is getting us to realize that we should actually be helping one another instead of trying to do it all by ourselves. Independence for ourselves is a pretty recent concept that came out of the Industrial Revolution during the 1800’s. Up until that point, most things were done communally, or “as a community.” The entire village did farming, with everyone pitching in to help get the work done on time. Many women coming together at one time accomplished the spinning of thread (I can just imagine the chatter!). Going back to Biblical times, Abraham traveled with his entire household (including many animals, slaves and other family members), while in the book of Acts (2:4247) the Christians began pooling their resources and sharing everything they had with each other. It is only since the Industrial Revolution started producing things quicker, cheaper and more efficiently that we began to no longer need each other’s help. By the mid 1900’s families and organizations started “cocooning,” or getting wrapped up all by themselves. We no longer needed anybody, and it was almost embarrassing if you actually asked for help. Our backyard fences were built higher, our phone numbers began to be unlisted, and our involvement in one another’s lives became superficial. Don’t believe me? Ask yourself, how many neighbours do you know that have real practical needs that you could actually help out with? The benefits of being a good neighbour are numerous. For example, you could share your tools with one another. We all know that the mitre saw we just had to buy is great when we need it, but we really only need it for those special projects. If you only need a pressure washer a few times a year, wouldn’t it be great to just borrow it

www.calgarychristian.com

and not have to shell out $100 every time you needed a special tool? Another example is renting equipment or doing projects together. A carpet cleaner or a power rake or even a trailer can be used by multiple people for the same rental as using it once yourself! Why not split the costs and share in the service? Finally, purchasing bulk packages are great ways to save but are sometimes difficult to store properly or use before they expire. Why not buy them together and share in the savings while only having to store a smaller amount? The same principal applies to any service quote; ask them what the price would be if they would do two or more jobs in the same neighbourhood. Y o u would be surprised at how much d i s counts people will give if they receive the extra business! Being a good neighbour doesn’t come easy, but if you abide by the following principles it can help pave the way. 1. Be the first to extend a hand. Don’t wait for them to make the first move. 2. Get to know them personally over a dinner or dessert. Nothing breaks down the superficial walls like good food and some funny stories! 3. Offer your help, your services, and your resources. Keep offering until they accept because in today’s society people don’t believe that your offer is genuine (They just can’t believe that someone would actually do that). 4. Invite them to special events held at your children’s school, your church or even a group or organization that you belong to. You would be surprised at how many people would go if they were just asked! 5. Include them in your planning conversations when you are looking at doing some work around the house or yard, baking cookies, doing a big shopping trip or even a special project. Find out if they have any of the things you need or could borrow, or even good advice. 6. Don’t forget to talk to God about them before you talk to them about God. You don’t want them to think that you are only getting close so that you can preach to them.

Calgary Christian School hosting golf tournament by Catherine Feenstra Calgary Christian School has been richly blessed by a community of dedicated supporters for several generations. Their vision led to the opening of the first Christian school in Calgary in 1963 and has continued to provide for ongoing growth and development of the faith-based program for more than 750 students from Preschool to Grade 12. In 1994, a group of parents came together, looking for a way to provide a gymnasium for the quickly growing elementary, middle and high school population. With this goal in mind, they began what has become a cherished tradition each year – the annual Calgary Christian Golf Tournament, played for fun and fundraising! The dream of building the gymnasium at the Secondary Campus was realized in 2001, but the fun lives on each year as 144 golfers gather to celebrate the CCS community and continue to raise funds for

the school. This year’s tournament will be played for the fourth time at the breathtaking Links of GlenEagles in Cochrane, Alberta and it is shaping up to be a grand success once again. Golfers of all levels participate in the tournament, and there are multiple opportunities for sponsorships for individuals and corporations. CCS is thrilled to be partnering once more with their long-time supporters DeJong’s Insurance as sponsors of the prime rib dinner and with Spolumbo’s Fine Foods and Deli who graciously grill up lunch and mid-game snacks for all the players! Everyone is welcome to join us for an amazing 18 holes of golf, some fun contests, great food and prizes this year on June 17 – shotgun start is 1:30 pm! More information and the registration forms are available on the CCS website at www.CalgaryChristianSchool.com or by contacting the Development Office at 403-242-2896 ext. 352 or 362.

Laughing Matters

My truth dare Two years ago my book editor Ron called. “I’ve had an idea for a while,” he said. “It will make for a great book, and you’re just the guy to write it.” “Is it about understanding women?” I asked. “Why?” “I’m good at those things, Ron. I am most excellent.”

8 — JUNE 2011, CITY LIGHT NEWS

“Are you telling the truth?” “Uh…not really. Why do you ask?” “Well, that’s what this book is about. I want you to see if you can tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth for an entire year.” “I’m sorry,” I said, “you’re breaking up on this end.” The truth is, as my Native American friend Roy likes to say, I had reservations. For some, a lie-less year would be an easy assignment. Not me. I am a humorist. I have been known to stretch a story or two. I told Ron that I am a chronic fudger. That nothing seemed more important in the church of my childhood than outward appearance, so I learned early to fake my faith. I’d sing “I love to tell the story of Jesus and His love,” when I would sooner have had my eyebrows plucked by spider monkeys than talk to anyone about God. “You’re our guy!” Ron said, and hung up. I told friends, “I am taking a truth vow.” One said, “Isn’t that a bit like giving up arson for Lent?” During the past year I spent over $1,400 making up for past debts. But I learned lessons that were worth every penny. Here are just three: 1. A closed mouth gathers no foot. When my wife asks me if this particular dress makes her look husky, I’m wise to be quiet. Employing the acronym THINK is better still. Is it True? Is it Helpful? Will it Inspire her? Is it Necessary? Am I Kind about it? Yes there is a time to confront, to speak up, but one of the surest ways to truthful living is to say less than we think. 2. Sin covers a multitude of brain cells. Here are three uncomfortable truths I discovered while keeping a year-long diary: I like playing Pacman. I will sometimes choose it over

by Phil Callaway reading the Bible. I like money. I know it won’t make me rich, make me happy, buy me love, or buy what it used to, but still I like it. During this year I invested in a scam and lost every penny. All because I couldn’t abide the thought of others getting ahead of me. I don’t rejoice enough. I weep with those who weep, bringing my wife’s casseroles to the sick. But when a friend enjoys success, envy lurks nearby. I am learning that most of my problems relate to my temporary perspective. Focusing on eternity changes everything. 3. Without grace we’re all toast. For 365 days I attempted to live without a lie. Did I succeed? No. I will never completely measure up. Thankfully God’s grace picks me up, helping me live not with obligation, but with deep thanksgiving. In the 18th Century, King Frederick of Prussia visited a prison where all the inmates tried to convince the monarch of their innocence. All except one man who sat quietly while the rest told their complicated stories. The king asked him, “Why are you here? “Armed robbery, your Honor.” “Were you guilty? Yes, sir,” he replied. King Frederick then gave the guard the order: “Release this guilty man. I don’t want him corrupting all these innocent people.” When we admit our failures and our need for God’s amazing grace, the truth sets us free. That’s why I have decided to keep this truth vow going the rest of my life. I’d like to leave a legacy characterized by truth, joy, and grace. Honest to God. We see things better in high definition. This works for the television and it also works for the Word of God. Words in the Bible have become obscured by religion and by common connotations. No word better illustrates this than the word grace. Grace is really poorly understood by Christians. Can you define it? What do you think grace is? The common definition of grace is unmerited favour. Unmerited sort of sounds like mercy. So we connote grace into mercy. What we miss is the word favour. It is the noun and it comes from the Greek charis which is also translated grace and joy. The noun is more important than the adjective. The Word says you are saved by grace not by doing the works of the law. The context of this can lead one to think grace is the opposite of work or effort. We think we don’t have to obey the commands of God because we are under grace not law. We know that if we mess up God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins. But grace is not the opposite of effort. It is divine effort as opposed to human effort. We are saved by divine effort

not by human attempts to keep the law. Remember that Jesus was full of grace. What was He full of ? He was full of power. Grace is divine power or divine enablement. We are not saved by our works (human energy) but by God’s works (divine energy). It takes energy to raise someone from the dead. Only God has enough power or energy to take someone dead in trespasses and sin and make them alive. Where does mercy fit in this picture? It is because of His mercy He gives us grace (divine power). But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you. — Acts 1:8 NKJV “I will put my Spirit within you and enable you to walk in my statutes.” — Eze. 36:27 NKJV The same power that raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you. That power is from the Spirit of grace. The Holy Spirit is full of divine power and enablement. He is the indwelling enabling grace of God for us. His power in us, His grace, enables us to work for Him. “But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.” — 1 Corinthians 15:10 NKJV “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God pre-

We don’t obey the commands of God in order to merit salvation but because we are already saved by His power. The same power that saved us can enable us to live in victory. During 1998 worldwide distribution through National Societies totaled 20.8 million complete Bibles – 20.1 million New Testaments – 19.4 million Portions (at least one book of the Bible) – 16.5 million New Reader Portions – 35.5 million New Reader Selections – and an amazing 472.7 million Selections (less than one book of the Bible). Distribution in China rose to almost 2.4 million Bibles. Distribution in the Middle East also saw an increase. In all, Bible Societies around the world distributed almost 600 million pieces of Scripture annually. No, that is not a typo: that is almost 600 million pieces of Scripture every year. The above figures represent distribution by Bible Societies and Bible Society Offices that together form the United Bible Societies – they do not include distribution by other publishers.

The roots of Southern Gospel music From Wikipedia... Southern Gospel music, sometimes called quartet music, is music that is written to express either personal or a communal belief regarding Christian life, as well as to give a Christian alternative to mainstream secular music. Southern Gospel is a form of Christian music and a subgenre of Gospel music. Like other forms of music the creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of Southern Gospel varies according to culture and social context. It is composed and performed for many purposes, ranging from aesthetic pleasure, religious or ceremonial purposes, or as an entertainment product for the marketplace. A common theme as with most Christian music is praise, worship or thanks to God and/or Christ. The date of Southern Gospel’s establishment as a distinct genre is generally considered to be 1910, the year the first professional quartet was formed for the purpose of selling songbooks for the James D. Vaughan Music Publishing Company. Nonetheless the style of the music itself had existed for at least 35 years prior although the traditional wisdom that Southern Gospel music was “invented” in the 1870s by circuit preacher Everett Beverly is spurious. The existence of the genre prior to 1910 is evident in the work of Charles Davis Tillman (1861–1943), who popularized The Old Time Religion, wrote Life’s Railway to Heaven and published 22 song books. Southern Gospel is sometimes called “quartet music” by fans because of the originally all-male, tenor-lead-baritone-

bass quartet make-up. Early quartets were typically either a cappella or accompanied only by piano or guitar, and in some cases a piano and banjo. Over time, full bands were added and even later, pre-recorded accompaniments were introduced. A typical modern Southern Gospel group performs with pre-recorded tracks augmented by a piano player and possibly a few other musicians. Some of the genre’s roots can be found in the publishing work and “normal schools” of Aldine S. Kieffer and Ephraim Ruebush. Southern Gospel was promoted by travelling singing school teachers, quartets, and shape note music publishing companies such as the A. J. Showalter Company (1879) and the Stamps-Baxter Music and Printing Company. Over time, Southern Gospel came to be an eclectic musical form with groups singing black gospel-influenced songs, traditional hymns, a cappella (jazz-style singing with no instruments) songs, country gospel, bluegrass, and “convention songs” (which were more difficult). Because it grew out of the musical traditions of rural white people in the South, it is sometimes called “white gospel” to differentiate it from black gospel. Convention songs typically have contrasting homophonic and contrapuntal sections. Examples of convention songs include Heavenly Parade, I’m Living In Canaan Now, Give the World a Smile, and Heaven’s Jubilee. In the first decades of the twentieth century, Southern Gospel drew much of its creative energy from the Holiness movement churches that arose throughout the south.

Memoirs of a prairie boy

by Steve Rendall

Writing on the wall In August 1965, when Howard Crane packed up his earthly belongings and headed to the western plains of Canada, I’m sure he had no idea what his life would have in store. The Cranes lived in Wellsburg, NY, a small town right on the Pennsylvania border. Together with his wife and four children, Howie traveled in their 1956 Chevy for five solid days to arrive at the school. Big changes awaited the family, but they were able to settle in and slowly assimilate into Prairie life. Howie had trained as a tool and die maker and upon hearing of the need for another machinist at the school he responded. Having had some previous connection, as his youngest brother had attended Prairie High School and his sister had attended the college, he was somewhat familiar with the school. Later on his mother served on staff, working in the Prairie Bookroom. Prairie President L.E Maxwell had also shared the work of the school in the Crane’s church and so it was not a complete culture shock when they arrived on campus. For the first few years Howie worked with Mr. Zweifel or “Pa” as we knew him. Pa was from Switzerland and was a highly trained machinist in his own right. The Zweifels were our neighbors when we lived on Prairie Crescent and in the winter I would often see Pa on his cross country skis coming home from work. He also loved the mountains and made many trips to Banff and area for hiking and climbing. You may wonder why Prairie needed two machinists but let me assure you that these “behind the scenes” workers kept the place alive and humming. Parts were machined for literally every department on the campus, from the garage to the electronics department. I remember when I was doing student work in the recording studio and we needed a bearing or some other part to keep the old tube Ampex tape recorders rolling, we would pay a little visit to the machine shop. Many of us wondered if there was anything these two couldn’t make!

Prairie had a fascinating potpourri of shops. It was enough to give a young boy ADD. Every time you opened a door you would discover a new piece of machinery or someone hard at work on a project. Many a staff kid was the recipient of this unique gift. I remember times when Mom would have to deliver the little red Ford Falcon to the garage for an oil change or to have the winter tires put on and I would duck into the many shops in that area of campus. John Hamm and later Forest Cummings were right next door, always in the middle of a spark show. They ran the welding shop. We would take our broken bikes to them in the hopes that maybe the front forks could be fixed one more time. We invented “offroading” before it was popular! On some of these trips I would visit the machine shop, home of Howie Crane and Pa Zweifel. Entering the door to the shop opened up an entire new world. Howie would greet us with a big smile and a twinkle in his eyes. Wearing a blue shop apron and clear eye protectors, he would welcome us to his place of service. Large metal lathes, milling machines and drill presses were strategically placed around the shop. Small tools of a precise nature were also important. Punches, scribers, tap wrenches and micrometers were the instruments with which these two men implemented their craft. But there was one fixture that had nothing to do with machining and everything to do with people . . . measuring people. On one side of the shop was a dedicated wall where Howie would measure every visitor who was willing to stand against it - heels in, shoulders back, chin out. Howie would get his stainless steel ruler from his desk and placing it on our heads he would carefully mark a small line on the wall and write our names and the date. As the years went by hundreds of staff kids were measured on this wall in many colors of ink and pencil. A real work of art. It was fascinating to watch the growth of not only yourself but also your friends. Howie always engaged us in meaningful conversation as he patiently went about the documenting

of our heights. I have often said I wished Prairie had been able to preserve that section of the wall for the museum, because of the enormous human element attached to it. In a recent note from his oldest daughter Gil, she shared the following memories: “We kids used to hang out at the machine shop when we could. I would sweep the shop for him and clean the sink. With the dime he would give me, I would go to the Staff Store for a box of Smarties to share with him. Dad had a big metal block with different sized holes in it, and a box of various sized screws – a puzzle block. I would try to fill as many holes as I could with screws. A wonderful way to keep a child busy. It was always fascinating to watch him create parts for various machines on the variety of lathes. He taught me how to use vernier calipers. He was amazingly particular, down to thousands of an inch, incredibly precise, always calm and patient. Even as a young child I realized that he was of amazing character.” Sometimes it is the seemingly little things that we do that can have long term impact. Howie’s soft spoken demeanor and thoughtful care for people won him friends young and old, many who are still in touch with him to this day. Thanks to Howie we also began a wall at our home when we were kids. Dad would measure us up against the cinder block wall of the Crescent house. When Cathy and I got married and had children we carried on the tradition. From our kids to their friends and visitors, sometimes even pets, all were logged on the wall. When we sold our last house in Three Hills, my Aunt Lois painstakingly transcribed every line off the wall to a long sheet of paper to be copied over to a new wall. So if you come over for a visit and you see me fetching a pencil and a ruler, you had better measure up! Stephen J. Rendall is an award winning Canadian music producer. Calgary native flying high in the music business by Amanda Bates For Calgary native Shane Wiebe, his performance of Tenore at the First Alliance Church on Sunday, June 12, will be more than just a homecoming; he will be showing what he’s learned in the past few years as a performer and as a person. A few years ago, Wiebe became a household name in Canada when he was a finalist in the hugely popular Canadian Idol show. Since then, he’s had the chance to develop as an artist. It’s with his latest project that he’s found a calling; when he performs at Sing! Events presents Tenore on June 12. Tenore is made up of Wiebe, Jason Catron, and Mark David Williams; they bring their impressive vocals to inspirational, sacred music. Wiebe was born in Calgary – where the tour ends – but he moved to B.C. and grew up singing in church choirs and at youth groups. At 17, Shane toured Europe with the Columbia Singers. It was on the tour that Wiebe met his future wife. Later that year he sang with the Vancouver Cantata Singers and the West Coast Mennonite Chamber singers. It was in April of 2004, having been urged by relatives to enter Canadian Idol auditions, the next phase of Wiebe’s musical journey began; he climbed to a Top Five spot on the hit show. Since beginning his musical career, Shane has worked with musical legends like Lionel Richie and Gordon Lightfoot. Richie himself said of Shane: “I could see

you standing on stage with a huge orchestra.” It would seem that Lionel’s prediction has come true with Wiebe’s Tenore performances. Wiebe doesn’t just fly high in the music business – he holds a private pilot’s license and often takes to the skies over southern B.C. He’s hoping his return to Calgary will also see his career soar. For more about Tenore, The Christian Tenors, please visit www.singtenor.com and for tickets visit iTickets.com. The performance is at 7 pm on June 12 at First Alliance Church. Canadian Idol finalist and now one of The Christian Tenors, Shane Wiebe.

TEACHERS NEEDED A Christian Education Foundation that started 75 years ago is seeking to employ Christians as teachers in schools in Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Qingdao and Yantai, China. Depending on the city, the freedom to share the Gospel is almost unlimited. Due to the fact that 300,000,000 Chinese are studying English, to minister to the locals you don’t need to speak Chinese, but you will have lots of opportunity to learn the language if you want to. It is the perfect opportunity for those who are interested in China missions, but would like to work on the tent making model, supporting themselves by teaching. The wage is very attractive and there are many benefits such as housing, (food in some schools), medical coverage, return airfare, gratuity and more. There are two types of positions: • One for certified teachers with B.Ed., which would open opportunities for teaching in international schools that enrol children of expats working in China. • Second is for university grads (B.A., B.Sc. etc.) of almost any major who would like to teach their major in an English as a Second Language environment or teach ESL in schools with about half local and half international students. Interviews to be held in Calgary. If you are interested, send your resumé to: [email protected] or call 403 975-0653 and we will respond as soon as possible.

Books for your summer reading... Heaven is for Real Todd Burpo and Lynn Vincent Thomas Nelson 9780849946158 $18.99 Heaven Is for Real is the true story of the four-year old son of a small town Nebraska pastor who during emergency surgery slips from consciousness and enters heaven. He survives and begins talking about being able to look down and see the doctor operating and his dad praying in the waiting room. The family didn’t know what to believe but soon the evidence was clear. Colton said he met his miscarried sister, whom no one had told him about, and his great grandfather who died 30 years before Colton was born, then shared impossible-toknow details about each. He describes the horse that only Jesus could ride, about how “reaaally big” God and his chair are, and how the Holy Spirit “shoots down power” from heaven to help us. Told by the father, but often in Colton’s own words, the disarmingly simple message is heaven is a real place, Jesus really loves children, and be ready, there is a coming last battle.

Daddy Sherry “returns” to Rosebud Opera House Rosebud, AB – It seems like yesterday that Rosebud Theatre produced The Kite, a humourous W.O. Mitchell play that left audiences literally crying with laughter. Rosebud patrons have very fond memories of Daddy Sherry’s performance as the oldest man in the world, and his colourful sense of humour. This summer (May 27-August 28), W.O. Mitchell’s rural humour is back with Jake and the Kid: Prairie Seasons – and who better to play Jake (the hired farm-hand), than the man who played Daddy Sherry, Nathan Schmidt. According to Schmidt, “the fun of playing characters like Daddy Sherry and Jake is that they are refreshingly honest, headstrong and lovable. I relish the opportunity to attack and speak impulsively rather than thinking before I act. It’s similar to the dynamics Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau have in Grumpy Old Men and The Odd Couple. Jake and Old Man Gatenby just say what they think and fight for what they know to be true and delight audiences along the way. Add to that the fact that W.O. Mitchell is a magnificent Canadian author with tremendous skills in creating realistic stories and humour. In both The Kite and Jake and the Kid: Prairie Seasons, the punch lines are perfect and the humour lands every time. It is a treat to get to play these roles.” Schmidt hails from the small Alberta town of Vermillion, located east of Edmonton near the Saskatchewan

border. Rosebud Theatre patrons will remember Schmidt in numerous other memorable roles including Schmendrick in Village of Idiots, The Fiddler in Fiddler on the Roof, Father Damien in Damien, Fagin in Oliver! and the gardener, Ben Weatherstaff, in Rosebud’s Christmas production of The Secret Garden. When he’s not entertaining audiences on stage, Schmidt is sharing his knowledge and expertise with students at the Rosebud School of the Arts where he is in charge of the Acting Programme. The play shapes three of W.O. Mitchell’s Jake and the Kid stories (The Day Jake Made Her Rain, Cabin Fever and You Gotta Teeter) into a two-act play with tall-tale story lines, colourful vernacular dialogue and poetic descriptions of Canada’s prairies. Combined, the show successfully brings to the stage the cantankerous hired hand Jake, the Kid, the Kid’s ma, Old Man Gatenby, a character that reappears in the stories as Jake’s neighbourly nemesis and a CBC radio reporter. Jake and the Kid: Prairie Seasons plays on the Rosebud Theatre Opera House stage from May 27 Wednesdays through Saturdays until July when it extends to Wednesday through Sunday until August 28. Matinee and evening performances are available. Please call the Rosebud Theatre Box Office for reservations at 1-800-267-7553. For info visit at www.rosebudtheatre.com.

God’s Love and His Light are revealed to us in the life, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Through Jesus’ sacrificial death, our wonderful, loving Heavenly Father can totally forgive us, completely accept and embrace us, wonderfully transform us, and pour out His astounding Father-love upon all of us who sincerely turn back to Him, and receive, by simple child-like faith, His Son, Jesus, and His eternal life. About the author John Hutchinson was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, and was keen on hiking, mountain climbing, fishing and hunting. After graduating from Bible College, he married Reta, and they pastored a church in a small town in southern Alberta for two years. Then God called them and their young family to spend ten years in India under Youth for Christ International, working with high school and university students. For the next five years, John worked in Canada with Canada Youth for Christ as a youth evangelist. For the next several years, John and Reta conducted home prayer groups and Bible studies in Calgary, which eventually developed into a church. Then an invitation came for John to teach in a Bible school as the Dean of Students. And John said, “Yes.” God had previously given John a very deep revelation of the wonderful greatness of God’s astounding Father-heart of love. This had so radically changed John’s relationship with the Father, that he incorporated this teaching into one of his courses. He was amazed to see the beautiful transformation this revelation also brought to many of the students in their own relationship with the Heavenly Father. John developed this teaching into a seminar, and also taught it in several other countries. God produced this same result in many more lives. John has been in ministry for over 58 years, has a pas-

sionate love for God and for people, a comprehension of Scripture, and insights that uniquely qualify him to communicate God’s astounding Father-heart of love. Available through Amazon.ca for $16.49. Editor’s note: I have known John for 42 years and can honestly say he has never strayed from exemplifying the Father’s love that he writes about. In the fall of 1970, in downtown Calgary at The Jesus House, John was our Bible teacher twice a week. Though I could speak of many wonderful experiences during that stage of my spiritual walk, one of them is that John became one of my spiritual fathers in the Lord. In the spring of 1971, he baptized me, along with about 30 others, including my wife Leslie, in a swimming pool.

Music Reviews Rebecca St. James I Will Praise You

The latest album from Rebecca St. James reminds me of the old “Certs: two mints in one” TV commercial. That’s because I Will Praise You is two genres in one. The songs are equal parts pop and worship — just as much at home on radio as they are in a church service. For St. James, this marks her first studio album in six years. And it’s as if she hasn’t missed a beat. This disc is

— reviewed by Peter Fleck sure to please long-time fans of the Aussie import who have followed her since her major-label debut in 1994. It’s also likely to garner St. James a whole new generation of devotees. But as captivating as the music is, it’s the album liner notes that have me truly shouting, “Praise the Lord!” You see, St. James has made a name for herself as a prominent spokesperson for sexual abstinence following her Year 2000 Wait For Me single and subsequent bestselling book, Wait For Me: Rediscovering The Joy Of Purity In Romance. So it’s exiting to see the 33-year-old finally signal the end to spinsterhood in her acknowledgements as she writes to “My Jacob…My love…I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you!” And then she tells her pending in-laws, “I’m overjoyed to marry into such a wonderful group of people.” Yes, Jacob, Rebecca was worth the wait! And for us music fans, the new CD was worth waiting for as well.

Derek Webb Feedback

The furthest thing from Derek Webb’s mind was to “record a collection of corporate-ready choruses for local churches to sing.” There are enough people doing that already, he reasons on his website. Instead, what the guitar player, vocalist and songwriter with Caedmon’s Call offers with his latest solo project is an alternative worship experience. The only word articulated in the entire 37-minute recording is “Amen” in the final track. Rather listeners are encouraged to let their imaginations fill in the blanks as Webb presents a musical interpretation of “The Lord’s Prayer.”

Each track focuses on a different phrase in the prayer such as Your Kingdom Come and Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread. Modern sounding, yet classically composed, the piece is broken down into three movements. In the CD packaging is an accompanying set of nine photographs and nine paintings designed to correspond with each track on the disc. While the visual/auditory link is a compelling concept, the highly abstract artwork admittedly does very little to inspire me. But the same cannot be said for the music. The soundtrack comprised of extensive electronic programming, augmented by live instrumentation, is extremely engaging. Composed by Webb along with his wife, Sandra McCraken, the music is replete with progression, movement and tempo changes. Captivating melodies are adorned with creative nuggets of ear candy and riveting percussive elements. Upon first listen, it almost seems like there’s a serendipitous “surprise” around every musical corner. From quiet and contemplative, to invigorating and energetic, Feedback has it all. The CD makes an excellent companion for a road trip. And one thing is for certain, you won’t have anything else like it in your Christian music library.
