PARENT FAMILY WEEKEND

Friday, October 16 to Sunday, October 18, 2015

WELCOME TO NORTHEASTERN Parent and Family Weekend

Welcome, parents and families, to this exciting time at Northeastern! While this university has always drawn outstanding students who strive to challenge themselves and change the world, the young women and men here today are creating, learning, and working with an energy and brilliance that’s unparalleled. They make this campus a place of growth and transformation. We are tremendously proud that your daughters and sons are members of the global Northeastern family. Over the coming days, you can experience the excitement in some of the many wonderful events around campus. You’ll have the chance to engage with members of our world-class faculty, attend a family fashion show, cheer our famed ice hockey teams, and hear a talk with Liz Murray, author of Breaking Night. Our college receptions and gatherings will connect you with the people and ideas at the front of their fields. Northeastern offers a world of opportunities, and I hope you will embrace as many of them as you can. I look forward to seeing you around campus this week, and in the years to come. Sincerely,

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT: DR. SUSAN FREEMAN, TEACHING PROFESSOR AND DIRECTOR, FIRST-YEAR ENGINEERING

318 Curry Student Center Why the focus on learning theory? Teachers should be teaching…The teacher as the imparter of wisdom and knowledge has changed. The focus for a while has been not on teaching techniques or even on the teacher at all, but about learning theory. What does that mean? Recent research and work has delved into how people learn, and then how we take that into our classrooms. Technology can help teachers accomplish a better understanding of the learner and learning, and can help leverage some of this learning theory. This session can help you take a look at this theory, not from an expert but a practitioner, both for understanding and maybe experiencing from your students’ perspective. This session might also enhance and encourage your own learning and teaching.
