REDEEMING THE PAST: TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION IN EAST TIMOR Tuesday 29 August, 7–9pm O’Connor/Pilkington Rooms, The Carmelite Centre, 214 Richardson Street, Middle Park As the 20th century ended, the people of Timor-Leste emerged deeply scarred from decades of violence and trauma, to be faced with classic moral and political dilemmas about their past. As Catholics should they forgive their tormentors? As nation-builders should they forget what was done to them and look to the future? As victims should they press for justice? Pat Walsh will discuss how the East Timorese have addressed these and related questions that, in one form or another, are also relevant to other societies in our part of the world, Australia and Indonesia included. Pat Walsh is a human rights advocate and author with a background of working in Indonesia. He has been actively involved with Timor-Leste’s ground breaking initiatives on truth and reconciliation since 2001 and recently served on a prime ministerial working group to design a Timor-Leste institute of memory to help future generations remember and learn from the past. Richard’s presentation will reflect on the background to these scandals and address the question of continued belonging and the possibility of renewal, noting the commitment of the Australian bishops to convene a national plenary council in 2020.
