COURSE ON CATHOLIC DOCTRINE: UNDERSTANDING THE FAITH Every first and third Tuesday, 6.15–7.15pm Caroline Chisholm Library, 358 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne (near Elizabeth Street) Having concluded his recent 20-week philosophy course, John Young now presents this course on Catholic doctrine, ‘Understanding the Catholic faith’. Highly recommended for non-Catholics with an interest in the Catholic faith, and for all Catholics seeking to renew and refresh their understanding of the Church’s teachings. But what role is there for love in an age marked by extremist violence? What is erotic love? What is agapeic love? What is ‘romantic’ love? And how can love be understood within a theological anthropology, using René Girard’s mimetic theory? This lecture, ‘Love in a time of terror’, will be given by Dr James Alison, a leading theologian and one of the premier authorities on the thought of French-Catholic philosopher, René Girard. THE MIRACLE OF THE SUN: 100TH ANNIVERSARY Thursday 12 October and Friday 13 October St Clare’s Church and primary school, 3 Harbard Street, Thomastown West To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun at Fatima on 13 October 1917, St Clare’s invites you to two days of celebrations. On Thursday evening the Rosary will be recited in St Clare’s Church at 7pm, followed by an international Mass at 7.30pm. From 8.30pm, a candlelight procession will take place, with the touring statue of Our Lady of Fatima. This will be followed by Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament until midnight. On the day of the centenary itself, Friday 13 October, on St Clare’s primary school oval, the children will lead the Rosary at 10.30am and then Mass will be celebrated in the open air on the oval. A blessing of the sick and Benediction will follow, with a farewell to the pilgrim statue of Our Lady at midday. All welcome. ROMAN RITE CATHOLIC MASS IN ARABIC Friday 13 October, and on the second Friday of each month, 6pm St Ambrose’s Church, 287 Sydney Road, Brunswick The Mass in Arabic is celebrated on the second Friday of every month. In this new initiative for Melbourne, Fr Samir Haddad of the Melbourne Melkite Catholic community will be celebrating Mass according to the Latin rite, but in the Arabic language. Prayers for peace in the Middle East are an integral part of these services, with prayer and music preceding each of these monthly Masses. The liturgy is displayed in both languages in the church. Arabic speaking migrant and refugee groups are especially welcome to attend, along with anyone working in support of refugees and asylum seekers. NATIONAL CHARISMATIC RETREAT FOR PRIESTS, DEACONS, RELIGIOUS, ASSOCIATES Sunday 7 January to Friday 12 or Saturday 13 January 2018 Newman College, 887 Swanston Street, Carlton This residential retreat is held annually each January. In 2018, the retreat’s director will be Fr Francis Innocent Otobo, from the Diocese of Sale, currently parish priest of St Michael’s Parish Traralgon. Fr Francis has preached at numerous retreats, conducted prayer days and celebrated healing Masses for many different prayer groups within Victoria. Ideally, this retreat is for archbishops, bishops, priests, seminarians, deacons, religious brothers and sisters, lay members of religious orders (associates), lay religious (tertiaries or third order members) of religious orders, chaplains, or indeed all who have previously attended these charismatic retreats. GENERAL NOTICES POSTAL PLEBISCITE ON SAME-SEX MARRIAGE The Australian Government has announced there will be a postal plebiscite on whether the definition of marriage in the Marriage Act 1961 should be changed to include same-sex marriage. Ballot papers will be sent out to households on Tuesday 12 September and all votes must be received back by Tuesday 7 November. Vote No, to keep marriage as a unique relationship between a woman and a man.

CHILD SAFE ENVIRONMENT DIRECT TRAINING: BOOKINGS NOW OPEN A child-safe and child-friendly culture is one in which awareness is maximised and risk minimised. As champions of this culture, all parish staff, leaders, volunteers, priests and deacons should attend the Direct Training sessions. As part of the Archdiocese’s commitment to creating and maintaining a child-safe environment, CatholicCare over the past two months has been conducting Child Safe Environment ‘Train the trainer’ sessions. Now, bookings for the 20 ‘Direct training’ sessions are open. These sessions will run for 2.5 hours in 20 locations across Melbourne and Geelong. They will focus on child safety and the Victorian standards and legislative requirements.
