NOVEMBER CENTENARY CONCERT CELEBRATING JAMES MCAULEY Sunday, 12 November, 2pm St Peter’s Catholic Church, 585 Toorak Road, Toorak This year we celebrate the centenary of the birth of the great Australian poet and hymnodist, James McAuley. McAuley’s hymns are sung throughout the Western Christian world. This special concert event brings together singers from three of churches of the Toorak Ecumenical Covenant—St Peter’s Catholic Church, the Uniting Church and St John’s Anglican Church—and community members, to recreate the sound and atmosphere of community singing of the 1960s. Interspersed by readings of McAuley’s poetry by friends and descendants, the choir will present a collection of hymns from the ‘Year of Grace’, with music by Jim’s friend and colleague, Richard Connolly. A fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities, jazz pianist and devoted family man, McAuley has inspired generations of writers. His deep appreciation of theology and Christian liturgy has been a quiet unifying force in society, strengthening bonds through songs which have for decades echoed among the churches of Toorak. St Peter’s Catholic Church is proud to host this remarkable event in homage to a great Australian literary figure and a man of immense faith. GENERAL NOTICES OCTOBER: NATIONWIDE MONTH OF PRAYER AND FASTING FOR MARRIAGE AND FAMILIES Bishop Michael Kennedy, Bishop of Armidale and Bishop Delegate, Marriage and Family, has written to parishes all over Australia, reminding them that October has been designated as a nationwide month of prayer and fasting for marriage and families. To assist parishes in supporting this month, the Australian Catholic Marriage and Family Council has produced a raft of resources for your parishes and schools. As Bishop Kennedy wrote: Even though the Month of Prayer and Fasting is a prayer initiative, not a political one, it does take on an extra significance this year as it falls in the middle of the government’s plebiscite campaign. I encourage you to redouble your efforts during this time to pray and preach about the beauty and importance of maintaining the current definition of marriage for the good of the Church and the nation. I encourage you to support your parishes to celebrate Mass, pray the Rosary and undertake Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament during this time with the special intention of marriages and families in mind. The resource also seeks prayer support for people who are same-sex attracted or gender questioning, and their families. A specific intention has been created for each of the Sundays in October, for inclusion in the Prayers of the Faithful, as well as in priests’ homilies and parish bulletin notices. This is the intention for Sunday 1 October: ‘This week we pray for the flourishing of marriages and families in Australia.’ Please make this your intention during Mass, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, parish rosaries and prayer groups and family prayer times. Please join this intention to your acts of fasting and sacrifice during the week. Visit www.acmfc.org.au for more information.
