You’ve Got a Friend in Parks You look forward to each quarter’s new Recreation Guide, pick up flyers at the MAC, and check the city website calendar when making big plans, right? Good news! We’ve made it even easier to keep up with the Mansfield Parks & Recreation Department, and the answer is probably already at your fingertips. Yes, your Facebook feed just got a whole lot sunnier, thanks to the brand new Mansfield Parks & Recreation page! Find us at Facebook.com/ MansfieldTxParks and follow our page for the latest updates on programs and events, sneak peeks at park projects and construction updates, and photos of your friends and neighbors enjoying our Gold Medal parks system and awardwinning recreation programs! Mansfield residents know our parks are second to none, and now we’re thrilled to share it with the rest of the world.

Online Registration Now Live We’ve all been there. You see a class in the Recreation Guide that looks amazing, and know your kids would love. Flag the page to go into the MAC the next day and sign up, and set the book aside. Pretty soon, two weeks have passed, your dream class is all booked up and you never even got an account set up. We understand, and we’re here to help! Now online accounts can be created, memberships purchased and most program registrations completed ALL online! No need to go into the MAC just to get a login or

purchase an annual membership, simply visit MansfieldParks.com and select Online Registration to begin the process. Creating a free online account is a simple process with easy to follow steps. Once the account has been created, purchase a membership to enroll in MAC programs. The membership purchase must be completed (paid for) before the system will allow online program registration. Nature Education programs and MAC events held off site do not require MAC membership and can begin online enrollment immediately. Remember, online program registration always saves 5% over in person registration, so you’re not only saving time but money too! And best of all, no more missed classes or forgotten events…you can do it all from the comfort of your home!

Mansfield Rocks Special Events Our city’s largest and most popular events of the year, the Red, White & Rockin’ Kids Triathlon and Rockin’ 4th of July, were both huge successes this year, with record crowds of happy residents. The weather was perfect, the music popping, and the fireworks exploding as our tenth annual event wrapped up on July 3 at Big League Dreams Mansfield. Never content to take a break, our special events team is now busy working on the brand new music & arts festival coming to Historic Downtown Mansfield this September. Read more about this on page 5.

Park Updates Big & Small The last few months have seen updates to many of your neighborhood parks, from massive remodels to tiny additions, our crews are always working to improve your experience! Skinner Sports Complex was officially dedicated in April in the honor of longtime Mansfield Parks and Facilities Development Corporation board member Michael L. Skinner. Mr. Skinner’s work was instrumental in growing our parks to the Gold Medal quality system our residents know and love today, and he and his family were on hand to accept the well-deserved honor. Clayton W. Chandler Park has been under construction all year, but opened at the end of the summer to rave reviews. New features include Mansfield’s first splash pad and skate spot, making this the city’s hottest (or coolest!) destination. Guests can also enjoy the paved walking trail with fitness equipment, gorgeous pond with fishing docks and covered pavilions, great for event rentals. In smaller news, many of our parks have seen little updates; additions of equipment or repairs. The big remodels can’t come as often as we’d like, but our staff is constantly finding little ways to keep everything running in tip top shape and exactly as our residents need. That was certainly the case at Donald R. Barg Park, where Mansfield kindergartener Maggie Fortner wrote a letter requesting swings. The city listened and responded, and Maggie was on hand to cut the ribbon on her new equipment this June. A simple solution to a simple problem, but Mansfield’s response time is, of course, second to none.

A little bit country, a little bit rock & roll… plus a little bit of salsa, a little bit of hip-hop and a whole lot of arts & culture! It might sound like a crazy mix, but it’s all coming together in perfect harmony for the City of Mansfield’s newest event. Music Alley is a one day free music & arts festival scheduled for Saturday, September 9, in Historic Downtown that will feature four stages of live music, artist exhibitions and displays, and plenty of food and drink to make for a fun, family-friendly hometown event celebrating all the arts our community has to offer. The festival is a joint effort between the city and the Mansfield Arts

theater and dance, to Mansfield and make it accessible for everyone. We’ve built such a great variety of options; there truly will be something for everyone.” Artists from around the area have been invited to participate in our live art exhibition, where each will create a painting or mixed media piece during the festival. Guests can watch the masterpiece unfold in real-time, and bid to purchase the finished product! The Artist Alley features our special guest Jimmy Don Holmes, a metal artist frequently featured on HGTV’s Fixer Upper, who will be on hand to meet fans and showcase his work.

Commission, a new city board. “The art commission exists to promote, support, enhance, and expand arts and culture opportunities in Mansfield to improve the quality of life for our residents and visitors,” said Rosie Gilbert, Cultural Arts Coordinator for the Mansfield Convention and Visitors Bureau. “The long-term goal is to build Mansfield into a regionally recognized destination for cultural activities. This festival is a great way to bring a wide variety of art programming, including music, art,

Twinkle toes or two left feet? All are welcome to cut a rug on our 400 square foot dance floor. Instructors will be on hand throughout the festival to teach basic dance steps in a variety of styles including country, salsa and swing, just before each band takes that stage. Budding shutterbugs ages 5-100 can submit digital photographs to the Music Alley Photography Contest for a chance to win special prizes, as well as the recognition of having your work on display at the event. Photographs can be people, animals or landscapes; anything the artist feels represents Mansfield to them. Historic Downtown Mansfield is known for its unique collection of murals that make great photo backdrops. Music Alley takes it to the next level, with dozens of floating mural walls in and around the festival, adding a splash of art

to every corner of the space and serving as the perfect ‘selfie station’ for guests to take a photo. A few of these murals made their debut at Mansfield’s Rockin 4th of July and guests were already in selfie mode before the night was through! Our littlest artists have not been forgotten! The Kids Alley is jam-packed with activities like magicians, puppets, an interactive drum circle, jugglers, kids’ karaoke, and a performance from School of Rock Mansfield. And of course, come hungry! R ec Sports Score Big with Adults

Bump, set and spike your way to fun and fitness with adult leagues at the Mansfield Activities Center! While youth sports have been popular for years, there’s no reason the fun has to stop just because you grow up. The MAC is ready to help with a wide variety of activities and leagues aimed at adults aged young to young at heart. “The adult leagues are one of our most popular programs,” said Recreation Services Supervisor Greg Guse. “I know I personally still like to be active and especially in the group atmosphere, where getting some exercise doesn’t have to be

7 fall 2017

such a chore. You’re not toiling away on a treadmill; you’re hanging out with your friends and having fun.”

“I get to exercise and spend time with my friends at the same time.”

-Sharla Williams

Participants agree, and flock to the MAC each season for the rotating schedule of leagues, which include volleyball (Winter and Summer), basketball (Spring and Fall) and year-round Pickleball open court, with tournaments in January and August. About 300 players participate in MAC sports each year, ensuring a good mix of competition and friendly play. As summer volleyball player Brian Craig said, the variety makes for better competition. “I’ve played rec sports at other places but I like the MAC league best because there are more teams so you don’t have to play the same team over and over again. It’s in a great location and provides a clean environment for anyone to play.”

Most MAC leagues run for six weeks plus playoffs, with all games scheduled on Tuesday evenings, making scheduling easy and consistent. Players regularly come from as far as Alvarado and Midlothian, but agree the convenience of the Mansfield Activities Center location and quality of friendly competition and overall organization make it worth the drive and keep teams returning season after season. Sharla Williams is on her fourth year in MAC sports, and said she first joined to meet new people. “I found the league in the Recreation Guide right after I’d first moved to the area and was looking for a way to get involved. Now, I’m still in it for the fun! I get to exercise and spend time with my friends at the same time.” For more information on MAC recreational leagues, see the Adult section of this issue, page 13, or call the MAC (817) 728-3680. The 5 on 5 Basketball League starts September 19, with registration now open.

Who needs bells and lockers to get a great education? Recent studies say approximately 300,000 kids across the State of Texas are educated outside the walls of a traditional school. Now, many Mansfield parents are finding great success in taking the home out of home school, at least for a few hours a day, and moving their classroom to a nearby park or activity center. Mansfield Parks & Recreation Department offers classes designed specifically for Home Schooled kids that can bring lessons to life and expand little minds, while also having a great time. Mansfield mom Amber has been bringing her two children, eight year old Sam and six year old Kayla to the Homeschool Science classes at Elmer W. Oliver Nature Park since last year after learning about the program from friends. “We love how hands-on all of the classes have been, they really get to explore different subjects and really make the lesson come alive,” said Amber. Each class, held twice a month at the park, includes a nature related lesson and a guided exploration with a trained Naturalist. “The instructors are amazing, and incredibly patient with the kids, asking lots of questions and making sure they understand before moving on. I also love that they will break into smaller groups by age if there’s a big range,

so that each child is getting the lesson exactly appropriate for their particular learning level.” Topics have ranged from animal behaviors and ecosystems to weather and chemical reactions. Lisa Dunn’s children Zane, eight, and Teagan, seven, have been attending Science classes for a little over a year. “We love the instructors. Love them. They’re so good with the

And I appreciate the handouts they give, take home extension work or resources to continue the lessons at home and incorporate what they do in class to what we’re working on.” That concept seems to be exactly what most parents appreciate; the classes are not a replacement for their already prepared lessons, but rather an extension and enhancement. Parks & Recreation classes offer a further level of education that’s either different than what parents are able to replicate at home, or just simply more fun!

Steve Long, former Olympic and professional athlete, has a full gym each week for his Homeschool PE Classes at the MAC. The hour-long program covers general physical fitness, team sports basics, and of course, a great time for the kids to socialize and burn energy. “I’ve been teaching kids for years, but usually in more specialized athletics. These classes are great because it’s not about fine tuning one skill, but just getting moving, and having fun,” said Long. “Of course, we work a lot of information into those games, and they end up learning a lot of really great lifelong fitness skills. That’s the fun part for me; making what could be a chore into the highlight of their day.” New this fall, the MAC now also offers art classes to give home schoolers a new creative outlet and another way to enrich their daily studies. An out of the box approach to education, whether for calisthenics or chemistry, is often what most parents who choose home school are looking for, and Mansfield residents are getting some much needed assistance thanks to an attentive and enthusiastic parks and recreation department.

Senior Lifestyles

19 fall 2017

817.728.3680

The Senior Citizens’ program at the Mansfield Activities Center keeps members busy every day, with classes, games and special events from bridge to line dancing. But did you know they take the show on the road, with regular excursions both near and far? It’s just another way our Senior Lifestyles program is, like most things in Mansfield, second to none. “We love to plan trips with our members, whether it’s to a new restaurant in town or across the state,” said Senior Coordinator Suzanne Newman. “I think most people love a little change in scenery from time to time, regardless of their age. We’re proud to be able to offer these trips as a safe and easy way for our seniors to have a new experience without all the hassle of organizing it on their own.”

“I think most people love a little change of scenery from time to time, regardless of their age.”

-Senior Coordinator Suzanne Newman

Senior Lifestyles On the Move Some trips are simple, and involve little more than a bus ride to the destination, which could be a local restaurant, bowling alley or museum. “All of the trips are so much fun,” said regular participant Wanda Lewis. “I really like the fact that I don’t have to drive, enjoyed meeting new people on the bus and the driver was great!” Transportation tends to be one of the biggest hurdles seniors face in getting out of their neighborhood, and the buses that pick up members for daily activities are the perfect

option to get everyone safely to a new destination as well. Other trips take the adventure a little further, visiting the Magnolia Silos in Waco or world-famous State Fair of Texas. Even something as simple as a holiday light tour offers a new, exciting experience without the commitment or hassle of a long trip away. For those looking for something more adventurous, MAC seniors have had the opportunity to schedule cruise vacations and week-long trips to the plantations of Charleston, South Carolina. Something for everyone and the added variety of new options each quarter. Susie McQueen said her favorite excursion was to Ennis, Texas, to check out the bluebonnet fields. “I loved seeing the amazing fields of flowers and the restaurant for lunch was wonderful!” Whatever the destination, most agree the fun is in the journey, and the companions along for the ride.
