ESOL / EF L English for Speakers of Other Languages / English as a Foreign Language • Are you a foreign national living in Northern Ireland? • Do you need to improve your English Language skills for education, work, or simply to make friends whilst living here? • Would you like to complete an accredited recognised English Language qualification that would improve your written and spoken English? Then you have come to the right place. Belfast Met offers a wide range of courses in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) leading to either national or international qualifications, which focus on general, academic and professional English. Our ESOL Skills for Life programme is particularly suitable, if you are taking up residency in Northern Ireland. You will develop your skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. ESOL Skills for Life is offered at six levels – Pre-entry, Entry 1, Entry 2, Entry 3, Level 1 and Level 2. If you enrol on an ESOL Skills for life Programme, you will take the ‘City & Guilds’ Skills for Life exams at the end of the course. These courses are available part-time (5 hours per week) or on an intensive basis (14 hours per week). The level 1 and level 2 qualifications are recognised by UK employers and some educational establishments.

These include: • Cambridge English Entry Level Certificate in ESOL International (Preliminary) • Cambridge English Level 1 Certificate in ESOL International (First) • Cambridge English Level 2 Certificate in ESOL International (Advanced) The College also offers IELTS preparation courses and the Cambridge ESOL Level 5 Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA). The CELTA course leads to a qualification which allows you to teach English at home or abroad to speakers of other languages. If you are interested in this course, please email [email protected] for an application form. Please note that all new students must be assessed before commencing an ESOL course. See adjacent instructions for assessment. For further information visit our website www.belfastmet.ac.uk or telephone the ESOL centre at 028 9026 5457/ 028 9026 5496.

English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classes are offered at three levels - Entry Level (B1*), Level 1 (B2*), Level 2 (C1*) These courses are available on an intensive basis (15 hours per week).

Assessment and Enrolment All new students must take an English test (assessment) which helps us choose a class at the right level for you.

We also offer an EFL programme leading to internationally recognised ESOL qualifications. These may help you gain employment or undertake further studies, either here or abroad.

You have two options: • Part online-based assessment and part paper-based assessment or • Full paper-based assessment.

We are proud to have been accredited by the British Council for the teaching of English since 2010 for this programme.

8

*Level equivalents on the Common European Framework Reference for Languages (CEFR)

Please note that if you enrol on an ESOL course: • You are expected to attend all the classes • If you do not attend classes you may not be allowed to complete your course • If you cannot attend one class you must inform your teacher in advance • You are expected to sit the examination at the end of the course Full paper-based assessment You will do the assessment at the College. Coaching and mentoring programmes

ILM  Level 3 Leadership and Management is ideal for individuals who have management responsibilities but no formal training, and are serious about developing their abilities. It particularly supports practising team leaders seeking to move up to the next level of management, and managers who need to lead people through organisational change, budget cuts or other pressures. It also supports new or aspiring team leaders - helping them make the transition from working in a team to leading a team. The qualification is made up of a wide range of units covering core management skills – such as understanding how to organise and delegate – plus skills in communication, team leadership, change, innovation and managing people and relationships.

Designed for managers seeking to gain the skills, knowledge and confidence to coach and mentor people as part of their normal role. Also the ideal starting point for a career in coaching and mentoring.

ILM L5 Leadership and Management is designed for practising middle managers, helping them to develop their skills and experience, improve performance and prepare for senior management responsibilities. A broad range of units cover skills in six core areas – working with people, managing self, providing direction, facilitating innovation and change, achieving results and using resources.

*Enquire about eligibility for 75% funding though Skills Focus Programme delivered as part of the Department for Economy Employer Support provision for each of the above programmes.

ILM L7 Diploma Leadership & Management Designed for practising aspiring managers and leaders seeking to develop their professional capability and personal brand, and who also recognise the need to satisfy various stakeholders; to understand the need to optimise performance within your organisation. CIM Level 4 Certificate in Digital Marketing

Foundation Science Degree Hospitality & Tourism Management

I started working with New Found Joy (A Gluten Free manufacturing bakery) immediately after finishing my A Levels and I really wanted to expand on my education and gain further qualifications. I gained this opportunity when I was informed of the professional qualification from the Chartered Institute of Marketing available through Belfast Met, which allowed me to study part-time while maintaining my full-time employment.

I have worked in the Hospitality Industry for 20 years. I began my career at Hilton Belfast, working front of house for nine years. I also gained international hospitality experience in Hilton Sydney, Australia for a year.

The course I decided to undertake was the Level 4 Certificate in Digital Marketing from CIM. This course included three modules from September to June. My favourite module has to be the Digital Marketing module as I love technology and how it can be used within every business to help achieve whatever objective is set. My Employer at New Found Joy was extremely supportive throughout the year and also covered the costs of the course. The course was definitely beneficial to my career as I was able to implement many of the skills I learnt throughout the course into my job immediately. Working full-time while allowing enough time for study is always a challenge however it has definitely taught me how to manage my time and prioritise tasks effectively. This year I have already started my Level 6 Diploma with CIM and I can already see the benefits of studying this course. I would 100% recommend this course as the blended learning delivery is an excellent way to learn a subject with the help of the excellent Belfast Met staff.

18

On my return to Northern Ireland, I began working for Queen’s University Belfast as the Assistant Food and Beverage Manager, before taking the role as Operations Manager for the Campus Food & Drink team. During my time at Queen’s, I identified the importance of marrying my operational experience to an industry related academic qualification, therefore, I decided to study part-time at Belfast Met for a Foundation Science Degree in Hospitality & Tourism Management. My first year studying part-time at Belfast Met was extremely rewarding, offering practical modules in food and drink; the highlight being the food preparation module. In years two and three the course included modules in Accountancy, Marketing, Human Resources and Business Management. Accountancy, certainly was my favourite module! The course was a three year commitment and as a full-time employee, I had to adapt to ensure I was allocating enough time for studies, while still performing in my job, which was a challenge, and I have to say the course has definitely helped me to hone my time management skills! I would fully recommend this course and in fact, the Foundation Degree has given me the appetite to continue my learning. I now intend to study for a full Honours Hospitality Degree.
