ongratulations to David de Wit and Bruce McKay, the two BC recipients of this year’s Canada’s Outstanding Principals’ recognition program. The program recognizes outstanding contributions of principals in publicly funded schools. It honours principals from every province and territory in Canada who demonstrate innovation, entrepreneurial spirit and ‘who have done something truly remarkable in public education.’ Recipients are recognized at an annual awards ceeremony; attend a five-day executive leadership training program at the Rotman School of Management (Toronto); and become part of a National Academy of Principals, a learning community of 500 Canada’s Outstanding Principals alumni. The five-day program, February 21 to 25, allows participants to: engage in a multi-faceted leadership development experience and to share practices with their colleagues from across Canada. The National Academy of Canada’s Outstanding Principals creates a learning community of outstanding principals who can share professionally, interact collegially and act as mentors to new colleagues. The Academy provides avenues for research and sharing of best practices. The gala awards dinner will take place in Toronto on Tuesday, February 23. The Representative for Children and Youth and the Information and Privacy Commissioner of BC have released Cyberbullying: Empowering children and youth to be safe online and responsible digital citizens. The Ministry of Education Ministry of Education will take the lead for government on responding to the recommendations. The Ministry will use the Expect Respect and a Safe Education (ERASE) strategy and redesigned curriculum as a foundation to build on. The Ministry has established an inter-ministerial management level working group to support the development of a provincial cyberbullying strategy and are establishing an advisory body made up of experts and partners. The BCPVPA has been asked to recommend a member to sit on the advisory board. A proposed first virtual meeting will held on February 15, from 1pm – 3pm.

National Survey on Balancing Work, Family & Caregiving The Canadian Institute for Health Research is funding a survey to increase awareness at both the public policy and employer level on the challenges faced by those seeking to combine work, caring for an elder family member, and perhaps children. The study also seeks to identify differences in caregiving challenges faced by employed caregivers caring for relatives with various forms of dementia versus those caring for relatives with chronic non-dementia conditions. The survey includes six sections and will take approximately 20-30 minutes. You can take a break from the survey at any time and restart as long as you return to the survey within 2 weeks. President Gordon Li on heading north

http://bit.ly/1O2vhMq

T

his past week I enjoyed a whirlwind, and jampacked, tour in the North of our province. I travelled through Bulkley Valley and Nechako Lakes. I visited 10 schools and gained a tremendous amount of learning about the challenges so successfully met by educators in those communities. Their creative solutions have lead to remarkable innovations and my thanks to Bev Forster (Principal, Silverthorne Elementary) and Heidi Grant (BCPVPA Director and Principal, Lakes District Secondary) who hosted parts of my visit. Among the many great experiences were my visits to Silverthorne, Twain Sullivan, and Houston Secondary (all in Houston) where the theme of bringing the outdoors in to engage learners, creates numerous opportunities throughout the year (I loved Silverthorne’s Tower Gardens, which incorporates nature in the classroom). I saw tremendous examples of partnerships with municipality, local industry, and post-secondary schools to build learning resources at Houston Secondary, especially in the skills and trades area. In the Nechako Lakes district, I visited three communities: Burns Lake, Vanderhoof, and Fort Nelson. In each community, as a result of history, cultures, and the local economy, I could sense how unique characteristics were incorporated into school cultures. In every community, I saw how school leaders worked hard to meet the needs of their students — welcoming all students, building a safe learning environment, and preparing them for a better life. Teachers shared with me their brilliant ideas and activities to engage learners. I saw schools and collaborative teams exploring models in re-imagined learning spaces, regrouping students, and reorganizing curriculum. From the rolling desk chairs in Lakes District Second-
