Seven day GP appointments

at your Health Hub The Thurrock Health Hubs will now be open seven days a week for at least the next two years, bringing extra GP and nurse appointments to Thurrock. Some of you may have noticed that the Health Hubs opened for extra hours over the winter. We are delighted to confirm that this has been extended for the next two years. This means that you can see a GP at one of the hubs seven days a week!

There can be many reasons why someone might find it difficult to attend a GP practice during normal surgery hours, whether it’s work, full-time education or some other full-time commitment. The extended opening hours means that it is now even easier for someone to see a GP. Gemma Curtis, Hubs Manager, Thurrock CCG, said: “Over winter, we had extra funding to open the hubs seven days a week to help manage the extra demand over the winter months.

“The extra opening hours proved very popular. Patients tell us how convenient it is to see a GP outside normal surgery opening times and it is great that we are able to announce these extra opening hours for the next two years.” If you are registered at a GP practice in Thurrock, just call your regular practice to book an appointment at one of the hubs.

Please be aware the Tilbury Health Centre no longer hosts the Tilbury Health Hub. If you would like to see a GP weekday evenings or at the weekend at the Tilbury Hub, you will now need to attend the Sai Medical Centre, 105 Calcutta Road, Tilbury, RM18 7QA.

70 Years of the NHS

On Thursday 05 July, people from across the UK will be celebrating the 70th anniversary of the National Health Service. Many of us have never known a world without it; it’s there at the start and the end of life and provides a helping hand though some of the most difficult periods of our lives. This year the NHS is turning 70. It’s the perfect opportunity to celebrate the achievements of one of the nation’s most loved institutions, the breakthroughs in care and the extraordinary NHS staff – the everyday heroes – who are always there to greet, advice, and care for us. Over the last 70 years, the NHS has transformed the health and wellbeing of the nation. It has continued to evolve and meet the needs of patients and their families but has always stayed true to its founding principle of free high quality health care for all. We are all rightly proud of the NHS. It has delivered medical advances and improvements to public health, meaning we can all expect to live longer lives. It has helped to eradicate diseases such as polio and diphtheria, pioneered new treatments such as the world’s first triple transplant (liver, heart and lung) and has continued to develop new treatments and procedures to care for patients. Looking to the future, the NHS is becoming more integrated and is investing in new medicines, genetic research and digital technologies like apps and artificial intelligence, which will ensure we continue to live longer and healthier lives. None of this would be possible without the skill, dedication and compassion of NHS staff, as well as

the many volunteers, charities and communities that support the service. The NHS is the UK’s largest employer, with over 1.5 million staff from all over the world and more than 350 different careers. From the midwives who deliver us into the world, the GPs and pharmacists who advise and treat us, the nurses, doctors and other clinicians who come to our aid when the unexpected happens, the porters who keep our hospitals moving, the support staff that make appointments happen, the researchers at the forefront of innovation, and so many others. The history of the NHS is one of evolution, of responding to the changing needs of the nation. Today’s NHS is rising to the challenge of a growing and ageing population, which means pressures on the service are greater than they have ever been. The population of England alone has soared by around 17 million people since the NHS was launched all those years ago, and more patients now receive life-saving, life-changing care than ever before. Despite all the challenges, people continue to receive first rate care and public opinion remains steadfast in its support for all the NHS does. So why not join some of the celebrations locally and across the country and celebrate the NHS at 70? Opposite you will find information on what NHS Thurrock CCG is doing to celebrate the 70 years that the NHS has been caring for all of us. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Issue 11: Spring 2018

What are your NHS memories? We are asking staff to share their memories of when they first started working in the NHS. Our own Accountable Officer, Mandy Ansell has provided some snaps of her training days in the 1970s as a Physiotherapist. Why not share your memories with us on social media by including #NHS70 in your post?

Local celebrations

We are planning two events in the summer to celebrate. In July we will be holding our big 7Tea information morning where we will be celebrating the NHS and sharing memories over a cup of tea (or coffee). The other event in August will be a family beach morning focusing on how families can influence the way health and care is delivered in Thurrock. Keep checking our website and social media for more information.

What’s next for NHS in mid and south Essex Find out the latest on proposals for NHS health services in mid and south Essex. Earlier this year we highlighted the consultation into proposals for health services in mid and south Essex. Thousands came out to events across the region to find out more about the proposals or completed the consultation survey to share their views. The 14 week consultation came to a close on Friday 23 March. An independent organisation is currently developing a report on the responses of people across the mid and south Essex area. This report will be part of the evidence that will help inform the Joint Committee* when making its decisions.

What’s next? The report is being produced by the independent company “The Campaign Company”. Once completed, the CCG Joint Committee will then need to discuss the findings and come up with an agreed plan. We expect this to happen in early summer. We will ensure you are kept informed and will tell you when there are opportunities for you to be further involved in the decision making around services and how they are designed and delivered. Launch of Thurrock substance misuse service

Thurrock Substance Misuse Service, provided by Inclusion Visions Thurrock, officially launches at open day.

Inclusion Visions Thurrock Substance Misuse Service held their official launch on 20 April at their premises on Orsett Road, Grays. The event was very well attended by service users, volunteers, staff, partner agencies, commissioners and the local community as well as special guest, Arsenal and England legend, Tony Adams, who spoke of his own recovery from alcoholism. The theme for the day was Health and Wellbeing. Those who attended had the opportunity to find out more about and experience what support is on offer for those affected by drugs and alcohol in the Thurrock area. Visitors were able to take part in Mindfulness sessions, Health checks by Thurrock Healthy Lifestyle Service, and talks on what mental health and clinical support is available in Thurrock. The day also gave an opportunity for people to learn about exciting projects for 2018, namely the Blue Light Project, a new digital suite for service users, and the relaunch of a group programme. The event marked the end of a successful first year under Inclusion UK, celebrating the leaps made

Your wider Primary Care team – meet the new Physician Associate!

Find out how a Physician Associate could help you with your primary care needs In the last issue of CCG Insight (Winter 2018) we introduced you to the many roles within your GP practice. When you call for an appointment, you might see other healthcare professionals, rather than a GP. Meet Hayley Rogers who works at Commonwealth Health Centre as a Physician Associate. Physician Associates are medically trained professionals who can support GPs by seeing patients with general illness and common healthcare problems. Hayley works with College Health practices providing support for adults and children. Hayley said: “I started at Commonwealth Health Centre in January 2018. The work is really interesting, my daily routine involves participating in telephone triage for patients requesting a same day appointment and assessing their needs to see if they require a face to face appointment of if they can be managed via telephone alone. I have around twelve telephone calls and four appointments in the morning. I see patients with everything from urgent health problems like chest infections to disease management for people with asthma or COPD, to pain and muscular or bone problems. Since April we’ve been offering a children’s clinic in the afternoons from 3pm – 5.30pm. This is so parents who want an appointment on the day can have their children seen. This is working really well. “I find it so rewarding and even have regular patients who ask for me by name!”

Hayley Rogers, Physician Associate at Commonwealth Health Centre

Hayley already plays a big part in the primary care team and also works at St Clements Health Centre too. Dr Chris Olukanni, GP Partner and Supervisor said: “We are delighted to have Hayley with us in College Health’s Commonwealth Health centre, with me as her GP buddy. “Hayley brings with her a genuine empathy for patients and a willingness to improve as a person. All the patients love her and this is an exciting time for us as a group as we work towards the new Primary Care strategy across mid and south Essex.”

More about Physician Associates • Training - 5 years, 3 years as a biomedical or healthcare graduate and 27 months at Post-Graduate or Master’s Degree level, completing 3200 hours of specialist training. • 27 Physician Associates trained already in the area, with many more to follow. • They provide medical advice, diagnosis and treatment plans for most routine medical conditions. • Supervised by a GP in the practice. • Can recommend treatment and have prescriptions signed by a doctor or prescribing nurse. Dying Matters Week 2018 Dying Matters Week 14 - 18 May 2018 – Have you talked to your loved ones about your wishes for End of Life care? This year the CCG will again be teaming up with St Luke’s Hospice and other providers to promote the idea that we should all make a plan for our last days, document it and let our loved ones and health professionals know what we want. Death and dying is still a subject that people rarely want to talk about. That’s why raising awareness is so important. We’ll be asking: What can you do to help someone you love, a friend or colleague who may be recently bereaved or near their end of life?

Events in Thurrock

St Luke’s Hospice will be in Thurrock to urge people to plan for their future care and support, consider registering as organ donors, write their wills, tell their loved ones about their wishes and record their funeral plans.
