Homefront SUMMER 2014

Homeowners Receive Bike Education For the past two years, Atlanta Habitat’s Home Smart education program has offered a bike class in partnership with The Atlanta Bicycle Coalition (ABC) and Sopo Bike Co-op. ABC has led a five-hour bike safety class, and Sopo has collected more than 20 refurbished bikes for our homeowners. Participants receive the bikes after they have completed the bike maintenance class, held in Sopo’s shop. Sopo also provided over 20 new helmets for the effort in 2013. On behalf of our homeowners, we thank ABC and Sopo for providing this very successful course. We look forward to continuing this great partnership!

Peachtree Presbyterian and Master Gardeners Reach 150 Homes Peachtree Presbyterian Church completed their 150th house this year! That means they have funded and built more than 10 percent of all the homes that Atlanta Habitat has built in the last 31 years! The church began building in 1988 and at one point was building up to 10 houses per year. The late Rev. Frank Harrington led the charge in the early years and committed to building 100 houses. It has taken the whole church, pastors, staff, lay leaders and parishioners to reach this 150th milestone. Rev. Vicki Franch and Rev. Jay Madden were present at the dedication of the home in April. Rev. Madden said, “Our relationship with Habitat is an important part of our commitment to the Atlanta community. I know that each of the 150 homes that we have built has made a difference in the lives of the recipients and greatly impacted our volunteers.”

Mohawk Flooring’s Partnership Supports 150 Homes Atlanta Habitat appreciates its longstanding relationship with Mohawk Industries, a leading global flooring manufacturer headquartered in Calhoun, Georgia. Mohawk’s vertically integrated manufacturing and distribution processes provide competitive advantages in the production of carpet, rugs, ceramic tile, laminate, hardwood, stone, and vinyl flooring. Atlanta Habitat builds 40-50 houses per year with hard-working families. Mohawk has donated all the flooring – carpet, carpet cushion, and vinyl products – for several years. The Lofton family home, which is being built this summer, marks the 150th Atlanta Habitat home to receive flooring from Mohawk. Further demonstrating Mohawk's commitment to affordable housing in Atlanta, Mohawk employees have participated Continued on page 5

Peachtree Presbyterian Church and Master Gardeners at the dedication in April.

Serendipitously, the Central Fulton Master Gardeners celebrated their 150th house alongside Peachtree Presbyterian. These Master Gardeners began four years ago voluntarily planting shrubbery, flowers, trees, and other types of foliage to make our homebuyers’ homes look even more beautiful. They do a great job of picking out plants and leading the volunteers in appropriate planting techniques. Jo McIver was present to accept the plaque for the Master Gardeners, and she is also a member of Peachtree Presbyterian Church! It takes dedicated congregations like Peachtree Presbyterian and organizations like the Central Fulton Master Gardeners to make Atlanta Habitat homebuyers’ dreams a reality. We look forward to building and beautifying another 150 homes with each of these groups!

President’s Report Atlanta Habitat is quickly moving into the most exciting phase of 2014. First and foremost, we have reached the halfway mark in the completion of 40 new, energy-efficient houses and are now gearing up for our renovations (Habitat IIs) and our Brush with Kindness projects throughout the summer! All of this activity is made possible by the generous contributions and other support by so many of you. Let me take a moment to give a “shout out” for some special moments over the last few months. We were thrilled to celebrate the 150th home to be built by Peachtree Presbyterian Church. What an amazing feat! Please read about their exciting accomplishment in this edition. There are other significant milestones as well. Mohawk has been a wonderful partner by supplying our homes with beautiful carpet, and we celebrated their donation to their 150th house! Their support has been fabulous. Our great partnership with Georgia-Pacific was highlighted with their 25th build. Their volunteers are amazing, and Georgia-Pacific finds so many ways to advance our mission – from being a co-sponsor of our 500th home to building nine homes in our first-ever subdivision and to their tremendous support of our new Family Support Center. We salute all of the wonderful employees and the committed leadership at Georgia-Pacific! Volunteers are vital in helping Atlanta Habitat serve hundreds of working families, who want to build and buy their home. Our volunteer appreciation event is just one way for us to recognize their remarkable contributions and commitment. Special recognition was given to our Volunteers of the Year, Century Club group, and more. Join us in thanking these incredible volunteers! However, there is much more to come this year – ATLANTA HABITAT IS MOVING TO OUR NEW HOME – our first-ever permanent base of operations! We have all of you to thank for helping us reach this goal. Just down the street from our current leased facility, we are watching the final renovation at 824 Memorial Drive. This facility will house our Family Support Center, complete with multiple classrooms for our education programs and a significant Homeowner Maintenance area (H.O.M.E.) for hands-on training. In addition, the building will include our offices for mortgage servicing, resource development, and administration while providing a significant warehouse and construction area. Now the excitement is growing as we expand our ReStore by completing a brand new, freestanding 25,000-square-foot facility, which will help us grow our revenue stream to build more houses! In closing, all of the board and staff want to thank each of you for your tremendous support. Together we have achieved so much for the families we work with and the community we serve. And yet we challenge you once again to do even more as we continue to serve more and more working families in fulfilling the dream of owning their own home and creating a brighter future for their children! With deepest gratitude, Larrie Del Martin

Homeowner Profile Ronald When I Grow Up, I Want to Live in Edwards Cabbagetown Ronald “Ronnie” Edwards was born in Atlanta in 1938 and was raised in the Cabbagetown neighborhood. As a boy, he never thought of what the future might be. The only thing Ronnie thought about was playing baseball with his neighborhood friends while the girls played hopscotch.

“If not, then I’ll just enjoy it while I got it!”

Shortly after turning 50 years old, he decided that he wanted to own a home with his wife, Carolyn Edwards, and their three children. Ronnie was encouraged by a friend to apply for homeownership at Atlanta Habitat for Humanity. It wasn’t until his third time applying that he met all the application requirements and was approved to build his first home in Cabbagetown. “I was out of Cabbagetown for quite some time, but Cabbagetown was never out of me,” said Ronnie. Some people used to tell him that he would never be able to pay his Atlanta Habitat home off. “If the good Lord wants me to pay it off, it’ll get paid off,” said Ronnie.

In November 2005, he was able to retire from work. Eight years later, in November 2013, Edwards made his final mortgage payment. Paying off his home is his greatest accomplishment. Although his wife, Carolyn, battles an illness and can no longer live there, she is still able to spend every weekend with him sitting on their front porch and talking to people who come by. Today, he describes his life as “happy” because he couldn’t be more thankful for Atlanta Habitat, the sponsors, volunteers, and his family for helping build his home 26 years ago. With tears of joy, Ronnie said, “When I say my prayers, I thank the good Lord for the wonderful people at Habitat.” Cabbagetown is a place that brings back warm memories. According to Ronnie, Cabbagetown has changed a lot, but if the people who grew up in Cabbagetown could see it now, they would be very proud. Doc Chey’s, Westside Foundry, and Yeah! Burger Host Fundraisers Westside Foundry, Yeah! Burger, and Doc Chey’s Noodle House teamed up with Atlanta Habitat to raise funds toward our mission. Westside Foundry hosted a Community Yard Sale on May 17. The yard sale featured about 50 booths that included new or gently used items from different vendors and individuals. All proceeds from the booth fees and food sales, along with a percentage of sales

at the Westside stores, supported Atlanta Habitat. Doc Chey’s Noodle House partnered with Atlanta Habitat during the week of April 28-May 3. During the week, if Atlanta Habitat was mentioned at checkout, 25 percent of purchases went toward the sponsoring of an Atlanta Habitat house to be built this fall. Enough funds were raised to purchase paint for the entire house!

Building a Better Atlanta, One Home at a Time

Yeah! Burger’s Virginia Highland location hosted their fundraiser on June 3 from 6-10 p.m. Ten percent of all sales also went toward an Atlanta Habitat house being built this fall. Each event had great turnouts, and Atlanta Habitat greatly appreciates their support! This article was written by Keegan Elsner, our summer 2014 communications intern.

Volunteer Profile A Family Affair While most father/son duos enjoy watching football or playing catch, Larry and Corey Gilbert enjoy something a little different. They spend their time volunteering in the Atlanta Habitat warehouse. Larry is a retired police officer who also works through the Atlanta Retired Police Reserve Unit to provide TV and movie security. His son Corey is a location scout for film productions. In their spare time, they enjoy volunteering and building walls for new Atlanta Habitat houses. Larry and Corey are both skilled supervisors, teaching new volunteers exactly how the walls should be put together. Corey was introduced to Atlanta Habitat through his dad, Larry, who has volunteered for quite a long time. Larry said that he originally did a security job for Atlanta Habitat in 1994 and then started volunteering on the Clark Howard builds in the 1990s. Corey’s first build was in 2005, right before he started college, and he has continued to volunteer into his career. When asked what they most enjoy doing at Atlanta Habitat, Larry said, “I enjoy working with volunteers who come in to start and think that they can’t do it at first. Then, three hours later they can do it and look so proud.” Corey enjoys teaching volunteers as well as helping homebuyers get into a home they can call their own. “We help make a difference,” said Corey. Though the Gilberts enjoy instructing volunteers, they both agree that the most rewarding part is being able to

Larry (left) and Corey (right) in the Atlanta Habitat warehouse

build something for someone else. Corey views their time spent as volunteers as an “opportunity.” Because he has a hectic schedule, having the time to take a moment and give back helps bring things back into perspective. So if you’re considering volunteering with Atlanta Habitat, Larry has a message for you: “Come on down! If I can do it, so can you!” Corey adds that we are “always looking for people, and it does not matter your skill level. We look for people who want to learn and grow.” This article was researched and written by Kaylan Storey, our fall 2013 communications intern.

in Atlanta Habitat projects for years, including the 150th home. “I had a great time working with my fellow Mohawk employees to benefit this homeowner,” said Holly Jennings of Mohawk Flooring. “I found the experience very Mohawk employees pose at the meaningful and am proud build site to be a part of a company that values giving back to the community.” In August, Jenny Cross, Mohawk Industries Vice President of Sustainability and Atlanta Habitat Advisory Council member, will lead the dedication with a host of volunteers, members of the Lofton family and employees from Mohawk. “The partnership between Atlanta Habitat and Mohawk Industries is a natural one,” said Cross. “Habitat builds beautiful, affordable homes, and Mohawk makes them more beautiful.” Atlanta Habitat would like to thank Mohawk Industries for their continuous support, and we look forward to flooring 150 more homes in Atlanta.

Summer Features Atlanta’s IT Community Celebrates 10th House For the 10th consecutive year, Atlanta’s leading technology companies and IT departments came together to sponsor and build a Habitat home. The annual Technology Community Build is spearheaded by TechBridge, a nonprofit that provides affordable business and technology expertise to nonprofits, and is co-sponsored by 12 IT groups including: CCCi, CTS, Leaders from the 12 sponsors with the homeowner Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta, GE Energy Management, InterContinental Hotels Group, Landis+Gyr, MDI Group, Pyramid Consulting, Southern Company, Synergis, Teradata Corporation, and The Coca-Cola Company. After a decade of building, the group has built homes for and with 10 families who otherwise would not have

been able to afford homeownership. They have helped parents provide a stable home for their children and helped families build wealth and security for generations to come. Every spring volunteers look forward not only to getting out of the office to do something positive for their community, but also to interacting with their peers from the IT community outside of conference rooms and email. “Each year the Technology Community Habitat House provides an opportunity to create a sense of camaraderie among Atlanta’s technology community,” said James Franklin, TechBridge CEO. After 10 years, it is clear that the move from building chat rooms to building living rooms is something Atlanta’s IT community enjoys!

ReStore Donors Get Creative Throughout this year, the Atlanta Habitat ReStore has received gifts given in creative ways. Two events marked some of the largest donations in 2014. The True Value Spring Trade Show sent much of their hardware and materials to the ReStore. And the Georgia Green Industry Association

Spring into Color 5k

put together a “Spring into Color 5k” race - donating the entry fees to the ReStore! The True Value Trade Show was held February 22-24 at the Georgia World Congress Center. Hundreds of vendors brought amazing donations including: home décor, bath fixtures, lawn maintenance items, outdoor furniture, holidaythemed furnishings, and garden tools. The donation was a huge undertaking, and it took the Atlanta Habitat staff and volunteers several days to get it packed and ready for the ReStore showroom. This donation alone helps fully cover the costs to build one home for an Atlanta Habitat family!

The first annual Georgia Green Industry Association “Spring into Color 5k” took place on March 29 in Suwanee, Georgia. It was a smashing success with hundreds of runners racing through a bombardment of color! The participants enjoyed festivities lasting throughout the day, and the ReStore is so grateful to GGIA for this unique donation.

Summer Features Georgia-Pacific Celebrates 25th Home Georgia-Pacific (GP), one of the world’s leading makers of everything from tissue to paper plates, completed their 25th house with Atlanta Habitat for Humanity this spring. They built their first house with Atlanta Habitat in 1998. Since then, Georgia-Pacific has been a strong partner with Atlanta Habitat, sponsoring full houses year after year. GP employees are also actively involved with the Atlanta Habitat board of directors and other volunteer leadership roles. Jashaun and Lauren, the lovely young couple who will be living in the home Georgia-Pacific is sponsoring this year, and their 14-month-old daughter are excited to share this milestone with GP. They are both working parents who are active in their church. They want a house to call their own – a place they can raise their daughter in a stable environment. Georgia-Pacific and their volunteers have been an integral part of Atlanta Habitat’s story. They helped sponsor Atlanta Habitat’s 500th home; they hosted an all-women build; they did an IT build. We are grateful for their continued support and look forward to the next 25 homes!
