Erect, Pack, Seal, Palletize System Wire Spool Application Project Overview: With plans to centralize operations at a single facility, this leader in cable management products needed an automated solution that would reduce manual labor requirements and eliminate ergonomically hazardous tasks.

Challenges: 1. The finished cases included two plastic end caps and one wire coil.

2. End caps were delivered on a separate pallet. The position and location of these caps was unknown. 3. Wire coils were very heavy. The heaviest coils were 85lb. 4. Both the end caps and the coils fit very tightly into the cases. Solutions: 1. Developed a multifunction end-of arm tool for the loading robot that can simultaneously handle both end caps and coils. This allows a single robot to be used for case packing and ensures that the required cycle time is met. 2. Implemented Fanuc’s 3DA area scanner technology to scan layers of caps on the pallet. This system was able to determine each product’s position and orientation. A cap depalletizing robot used this information to accurately pick caps from the pallet. 3. Used Fanuc’s R-1000iA/100F 100kg robot with a heavy duty gripper to handle the coils. Conveyors with close center rollers were used to ensure that the products and cases transferred smoothly. 4. The loading robot articulated the end caps into the case, pushing out the case flaps during the loading motion.
