Peninsula Arts Contemporary Open 2015 Guidelines & Application Form Introduction Plymouth Contemporary Open 2015 a new major open submission exhibition, providing a platform for new, up and coming creative talent alongside nationally and internationally significant artists. Working in partnership with Plymouth City Museum & Art Gallery the theme of the inaugural Plymouth Contemporary Open is an exploration of the relationship between history and the very latest innovations and understanding within contemporary art practice. There will be a number of prizes available, including a new artist award and an audience choice award. The selection panel comprises Helen Legg, Director, Spike Island, Bristol; Sam Thorne, Artistic Director, Tate St Ives; Judith Robinson, Partnerships & Programme Manager, Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery; Alan Schechner, Head of School of Art & Media, Plymouth University, Dr Sarah Chapman, Director, Peninsula Arts, and Chris Cook, Artist. For this new exhibition entry is free.

The Open Exhibition The exhibition will run from 11 July to 29 August 2015 and is open to all contemporary visual artists, national and international, working in any medium. The selection panel will be looking for submissions that clearly reflect this year’s theme.

Submissions Free entry, by digital submission, to [email protected] Artists can submit a maximum of 2 artworks. Submissions should be artworks produced within the past two years, and reflect the artist’s current practice.

Images must be submitted as JPEG files: recommended size 1-3MB (maximum 3MB), 300dpi. All image files must be saved with your name and title of your work (for example, JSmith_picture1.jpg). Do not embed any watermarks or copyright symbols within the submitted image. If your work is selected for the exhibition, we will print your work in a small accompanying brochure. Please ensure the submitted image presents your work at the highest quality. Video, animation and performance work must be submitted as a Vimeo or YouTube link. Please note that for the selection process, the selection panel will only watch the first two minutes of the work (though the finished work may be longer). All files must be clearly labelled with artist’s name and title of artworks. Application opens: Monday 16 February 2015, 12 Midday. Application deadline: Thursday 2 April 2015, 12 Midnight.

Awards The Awards will be chosen by a judging panel and presented on the opening night, these are: Overall award: £2500 Additional Award: £1000 New Artist Award: £1000 Audience Choice Award: £500 (to be announced in the final week of exhibition)

Sale of Artworks Artists may choose to offer their work for sale during the duration of the exhibition. Artwork must remain on display during the duration of the exhibition, even if sold. Peninsula Arts will administer the sale and delivery of artworks sold. There will be a 25% commission charge to Peninsula Arts on the sale of any work.



Terms and Conditions of Entry, online submissions only, we do not accept postal entries.



No late submissions will be accepted after midnight on Thursday 02 April 2015.



All entrants must be over 18 years of age at the time of application.



Work must have been produced in the last two years prior to submission.



To be eligible for the New Artist Award the artist would be a current student (2015) or new graduate (2013, 2014 only).



A maximum of 2 works per Artist can be submitted. Multiple applications will not be permitted. All submitted artworks may be chosen for display, so your entries must be available from Tuesday 30 June to Saturday 29 August 2015 (which includes installation and exhibition dates). No substitutes will be accepted if the artwork is no longer available or sold.



All work must be the artist’s own.



Max. dimensions: 2D, wall based work – 2.5 metre x 2.5 metre (incl. frame). 3D, sculpture, floor based work: 2.5 metre² x 2.5 metre². Total weight, including packing materials, must not exceed 100kg.



The artist is responsible for all packing, transport and associated costs to and from Peninsula Arts.



Entries requiring special installation should include details in the ‘installation/technical/equipment requirements’ section on the entry form. There will be a bursary available to assist with the transportation of selected works from outside the South West region*. Please contact Peninsula Arts for further details. *the South West region is defined as comprising the counties of Gloucestershire, Bristol, Wiltshire, Somerset, Dorset, Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

Any work not collected by 17:00 on Wednesday 02 September will be disposed of as storage facilities are not available. •

Performance/Live Art will be considered, but applicants must give clear and detailed examples of how the work is to be performed and presented for the exhibition period.



Video or projection work must be accompanied by an inventory of equipment needed to display the work if selected, using the ‘Anticipated technical/equipment requirements’ section on the entry form.



All artworks will be installed by the Peninsula Arts team. The artist is responsible for presenting their work ready for display, including frames or mirror plates for secure display.



All artworks are submitted at own risk. Artwork will be covered by Peninsula Arts insurance from arrival to the Peninsula Arts Gallery to collection. It is strongly advised that artists take out their own insurance to cover the work in transit to and from the Gallery.



Copyright remains with the artist, but by submitting works, artists agree that images of their works may be used for promotional purposes, across a broad range of media including PR; web, social media, exhibition publicity and brochure.
