The Wadawurrung People are the traditional owners of the land we know as Ballarat. In the 1830s, Europeans settled in Victoria and farmed sheep across its grassy plains, with an enormous impact on the Aboriginal People living there. In 1851, following the discovery of gold, hundreds of thousands of international fortune-seekers rushed to the Ballarat goldfields, and a city began to take shape. The lifestyles of the Wadawurrung People changed dramatically as a result of these waves of immigration, but many of their descendants still live in the region.
