Save Florida Panthers By Jacob Ashkinaze-Collender
What do you think of Florida panthers? Most people think of them as BIG, scary, sleek, swift, and dangerous on many levels. If you took the time to learn about these majestic big cats, I think you will agree that they are just another living organism made to hunt and survive. In my research, I found that Florida Panthers are critically endangered. On a scale of 7, they are 2 away from becoming extinct due to human deforestation and encroachment. Florida Panthers live in the Rocky Mountains of Florida, swamps, and places with tall grass and very forested areas, but now, people are invading their habitat and cutting down the forest that they need to live and survive. In the Florida Keys, they have nature preserves to protect the wildlife. We need to make more of these areas to keep innocent animals safe. Did you know that people dump chemicals and garbage into the swamps where the dens of panthers live? People treat the environment like trash because they throw trash into it themselves and even chemicals. When the water gets contaminated, all the animals, not just panthers get sick and then must die because of chemicals and sickness. Human encroachment is when humans invade and destroy the ecosystem like cut down trees and make it into farmland like in the rainforests when they use the trees to make houses and make the land into farmland. Now from the beginning to the end what do you think about Florida Panthers? Please help save the lives of these gentle, cute cats.

Pets need love too By Grace Hoermann
Schools need class pets and they should be pets that have been treated poorly, so they have a chance to find love. Some pets are treated badly and need to have a second chance to be loved. How can the animals get any better if they never get a chance to be loved?
Animal testing is bad for animals because more animals die and more wildlife is gone. That’s why people shouldn’t test on animals. They should test on things that are already dead or plants. Another reason animal testing is bad is because people love animals, just like me. So if you love animals like me, I hope that you don’t test on animals because it could hurt or kill them. Also, 13 of 22 kids in fifth-grade said “no” to testing animals. Animals are getting hurt or killed by testing on them and they’re innocent, they didn’t do anything to you, or even look at you. You just capture the animals and use them as lab rats. If someone from your family died or got hurt, you’d cry the same as an animal would if their family member got hurt or died. So if you hurt or kill an animal’s family member, that animal will cry just like you would cry when your family member died. When you test on an animal and it fails and kills some, there’s going to be less animals in the world and less things to learn about them. Also, if a per-

Look at all those graceful elephants lined up in a pack. All of a sudden “thwap” a tranquilizer dart pierces through the elephant. Is there anything as sad as a huge elephant falling to the ground? All those poachers do not have hearts, their greed consumes them for the money. Elephants are endangered and they did not hurt us, so why should we hurt them? We should not hunt elephants and we need to save the elephants! Did you know 100 elephants die a day from poaching? That is sad, elephants are killed by poachers. Poachers are obsessed by money and elephants are very valuable to them because they have ivory tusks. Ivory is a mineral that is worth a lot of money so poachers kill the elephants and take the ivory. Thanks to poachers one of the oldest animals of all time is greatly endangered. The population is critical, studies show that there are about 450,000 to

My first piece of reasoning to support this exceedingly important claim, is that some animals have been abused and have had bad things happen to them. They’ve never been loved. If they have never been loved, then how can you help them get as much love as possible? How about have them in a classroom full of kids so excited for the animal to be there! 12 people in my fifth-grade class voted that they deserve another chance! It could change an animals life.
The last piece of evidence for my claim is that if these were class pets then they could inspire kids to make a difference in their community. If the class pets are abused animals then maybe when the kids in the class grow up, they would want to change the very world that we live in, and make a difference!
The second piece of evidence that I have obtained for this claim, is that if the class pet is an abused animal it will teach children how to be more responsible. Kids will have to be gentler with an abused animal because it may be hurt. It would definitely encourage

Animal testing is bad for animals because more animals die and more wildlife is gone, that’s why people shouldn’t test on animals. They should test on things that are dead or plants. Many people love animals just like me, so I hope that you don’t test on animals like other people because it can harm or kill the animal. So if I were you I would NOT do animal testing.

HEALTHIER LUNCHES NEEDED What did your child eat at school yesterday? Did you pack them lunch from home, or are you one of those parents who lets their children eat whatever they want at school? Do you even know what they are eating? School lunches are very unhealthy and promote unhealthy eating habits for kids. The unhealthy food makes children sick. That’s why schools should serve healthier lunches. KIDS NEED TO CREATE HEALTHY EATING HABITS Kids need to create healthy eating habits. This is true because nutritious meals help your child focus and maintain a healthy weight. Some people think that school lunches are fine but I am going to tell you why that’s not true. For example, Julia Lear said, “Schools play an important role in improving the nutrition of young people. She also said, “Childhood obesity can’t be ignored anymore.” Today more than 9 million people, ages 6 to 19 are overweight. You may think you are a good parent by letting your child buy lunch, but a good parent would make sure their child eats healthy food, so make sure you do that. Experts say that more than one third of American adults and 17 percent of children are obese, so make sure your child isn’t. UNHEALTHY FOOD MAKES CHILDREN SICK Unhealthy food makes children sick. The choices you make today could cause illnesses in the future. Experts say that obesity at a young age can lead to serious health problems later in life. An example of those

Nutritionists say that school lunches are too fatty and have too many calories. It may not be a good idea to let you child buy lunch. People can get serious illnesses because of how they eat. Make sure your child eats a healthy lunch that doesn’t make them sick. Schools should serve healthier lunches. School lunches provide unhealthy eating habits for kids, and they make children sick. So what should kids eat at school? How about something other than junk food. Some whole grain products, salads, and a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables would be perfect. Have you ever thought, “Hey I would like some Shake Shack at school” but when you see the lunch you make a horrible face? Usually kids won’t eat the lunch because of what it looks like. That’s a huge problem. Some lunches can contain too much fat, salt and also too many calories! This is what kids are used to. Please make the school lunches tastier and healthier.

I think Wilton needs a dog park because it’s good for the community. The dogs can meet other dogs, run around, exercise, and have fun. It also brings people together, and it makes a community. Solar Power Solar power is the conversion of energy from sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaics, indirectly using concentrated solar power, or a combination. Solar power is also great for the environment, unlike fossil fuels which cause global warming.

SHORTER SCHOOL WEEKS By Evan Lalor
School weeks must be four days instead of five. Superintendents must change the amount of days in a school week to four. In my opinion, there are too many days in a school week. One reason is that kids go crazy on Fridays and they do not focus as well as earlier in the week. Another reason is if we have a three-day weekend we could have enough time to do our sports and just be a kid. When I took a survey in Mrs. Didelots class, eleven out of twenty-three kids said, “we should have four-day weeks instead of five.” Five kids said “no” to four day weeks. Six kids said, “I don’t care” and one kid said, “we should have four-day weeks every other week”. Based on this data it shows that the majority of my class wants four-day weeks. My first reason that we should have shorter school weeks is because on Friday afternoons kids do not focus. This makes teachers go nuts and it is not fair for teachers to deal with. Additionally, school weeks should be shorter by half an hour because seven hours of school is too much time. I think this because we have seven periods and that is too much time for academics. If we do anything, we can keep seven periods but make them shorter.

My second reason is that we need three-day weekends because kids need time to do their sports and kids need to be kids. This is crucial to kids. Class Pets bring happiness

Did you know that over 3.1 million students are bullied every year? Bullying is a problem and it needs to stop. Bullying is when one person or one group use “superior strength or influence to intimidate (someone),” usually to make the victim do what the bully wants. Bullying needs to stop because it lowers self-esteem, and also it convinces some victims to commit suicide. Bullying is an everyday problem that is found many places. For example, you can find bullying on the playground, the cafeteria, when the teachers are not looking, work, and even regular everydayactivities. Currently, schools are trying to stop bullying by putting up posters, doing guidance lessons, and talking about it. Workplaces often have staff watch videos once a year and you might see a commercial on TV. What we all need to think about is how we can stop bullying through changing people’s mindsets. Bullying needs to stop because it lowers the victims self-esteem. A person with low self-esteem, may think that they are a horrible, useless person that does not belong in this world. When someone has a low self-esteem it can lower their *academic health. Bullying needs to stop because it lowers self-esteem, but also because in serious cases it can convince kids to commit suicide. Approximately 4,400 people commit suicide because of bullying. According to livescience.com, “Kids between the ages of 5 and 12 who were frequently bullied were three times more likely to harm themselves, compared with children who weren’t bullied.” I did a survey about bullying to help me understand more about my topic, and I discovered that bullying increases more throughout the years. Also, I did a survey to find out how many people feel as though they have been bullied at some point in school. My results were as follows: half the class may have been victims of bullying, and half the class have not been.

When you’re happy you naturally work better and it is a great way to learn responsibility. It would be great to have a class pet in our classroom. Did you know that a positive attitude can boost up your grades by 12%? Studies show that by being happy it can actually make you work better. Scientists did a test with a 700-person experiment. The test included a comedy clip, free drinks, and snacks, which made the contestants happy. Then the researchers gave them tasks to measure productivity. The test showed that their productivity increased by an average of 12% and a high of 20%! Class pets would be a wonderful way to help kids emotionally and bring positive attitudes to the classroom! Are GMOs good or bad? Well, it’s easy to say. GMOs are safe to eat. But before we look at all the details, let’s look at what a GMO is. A GMO is short for genetically modified organism. Food companies make genetically modified food. This is great because now it can be healthier. But some people protest it because they think it is dangerous. Now I give you a choice, would you like to eat the truth? Or taste the lies…
Do you think elementary school kids like to start at 7:40 am, then leave school at 3:30 pm? The answer is no! The school week should end on Thursday so that kids have a three-day weekend. The school week needs to be shorter, and we can do this by having a half day on Fridays. One reason is that if you have sports on Friday you don’t want to go to school because you want to get ready for your practice or a game. Another reason is kids need more rest during the school week. One reason we need a shorter school week is that if you have sports on Friday you don’t want to go to school because you want to get ready for your practice or game. Let’s start with how GMOs are made. GMOs are made from a tool called CRISPR. CRISPR is used to extract DNA from one organism and implant it in another. This is how a GMO is made, whether it’s a plant or an animal. Once the GMO is converted to food scientists have made it healthier than the original version. As you can see, CRISPR is a completely safe way to produce GMOs. GMOs have a great health impact on the world. One scientist took plain white rice and genetically modified and it to be golden rice. Also when a dog is in a dog park he/ she can be off leash. Some people may say that dogs can run off or hurt other people, but really people would not bring their dogs to a dog park if they were vicious. Also there would be a fence so dogs would not run off.

Dog Park in Wilton Would Have Multiple Benefits...Not Just for Your Pet A dog park will be an excellent addition to Wilton. Many people in Wilton own a dog so driving in a car all the way to a dog park in a different town doesn’t make sense. That is why Wilton needs a dog park. Also, a dog park is a good way for people and dogs to socialize and get out of the house. Wilton has a great spot for a dog park and many people would go to it if it existed. That is why Wilton needs a dog park. Making New Friends A dog park will be an excellent addition to Wilton. A dog park is a great way to get out of the house and for your dog to get exercise. Dog parks allow dogs to get physical and mental exercise, which helps with bad and annoying behaviors. If there is a dog park in Wilton would you go to it? In Mrs. Lewis’s class 14 out of 20 people have dogs and 15 out of 20 want a dog park. A dog park is a good opportunity for you to learn about dogs from experienced owners.If Wilton had a dog park, how many times would you go? In Mrs Didelot’s class, 8 kids would go 5-6 times a week, 7 kids would go 3-4 times a week, 2 kids would go 1-2 times a week and 5 kids would never go. A Quick Drive A dog park will be an excellent addition to Wilton. Wilton has a perfect place for a dog park, called Schnucks Island. A great location and a fenced in area will allow your dog to run around freely, without a leash and meet other dogs, but some people don’t want a dog park. A dog park may be dangerous if a dog is unfriendly or a person is afraid of dogs, but, if you’re afraid of dogs or your dog is unfriendly, stay away from the dog park so other people have a fun time and you can stay safe. A dog park will be an excellent addition to Wilton. Wilton has a great spot for a dog park and many people would go to a dog park. Having a dog park in Wilton will be a great way to meet new people and for your dog to meet new dogs and socialize with other dogs. Wilton has a perfect spot for a dog park too, Schnucks Island. Adding a dog park would make dogs and their owners very happy!

Did you know that about 1.6 million people die from texting while driving a year? I know it might sound crazy but it’s true. So I propose that we all have digital dashboards in our cars. To get you thinking about it picture this......... You’re driving and you are at a red light. You look at the light every 3 seconds while texting your BFF or work friend. It turns green, you don’t look up and “honk” goes the car behind you. You look up and start to move. You quickly look back down to see your text. You go but its too late, it’s red and BAM!!! You run into the car in front of you. You’re dead. The reason we should have digital dashboards is so you can drive safely! I know If you have a digital dashboard in your car then you can ask Siri to text someone and she will do it. I asked a lot of kids and interviewed about 100 students about whether we should have digital dashboards here is the data: As you can see from the data, most kids want digital dashboards. Some people may say, “NO digital dashboards because our lives are turning us into electronic freaks. Our lives revolve around electronics.” But, we do need them because it will make it a lower chance of getting in a accident. A lot of kids talk to their parents about
how their family or someone they might not remember died. According to Wikipedia, 40% of the time parents say they die from a car accident. This is a tragity! My friends grandma died from a car accident almost 5 years ago when the rules of texting while driving were not as intense. Now that more and more people are dying from car accidents than anything else, still the rules are not being bent. Right now hopefully thinking, wow I should really get a digital dashboard, if you’er not, then you should. If your car is old and it does not have a digital dashboard then go to mom and say, “MOM, I want a digital dashboard because I feel unsafe.” It really is a tragedy that so many people are dying a stupid death but we can fix that make the future better. In conclusion, people should get digital dashboards because it will make the future safer. People should get digital dashboards because it is it will make driving safer and it will make our travel safer. People

Bigger Lockers for Cider Mill School Cider Mill School, “CMS” should have bigger lockers for kids with locks, because kids have their school stuff plus sports stuff and jackets. Another reason is that a lot of people like what other people have so they will steal it. If kids get bigger lockers with locks it will prepare them for middle school and it will prevent kids from losing or getting their stuff stolen. CMS should have bigger lockers for kids with locks. One reason is because kids have to keep all of their school stuff is in their lockers. My second reason is that their backpacks are in their lockers, and in the winter, kids have to put their jackets in their lockers too. When you have smaller lockers, you can lose your stuff easily because there is not enough room. An example is my two friends have soccer and they have to fit their bags in their lockers and they can’t. CMS should have bigger lockers for kids with locks. You will not have room
to fit all of your stuff so you will have to put it on the top of your locker and someone can go by your locker and say, “Oh that notebook is so pretty i want it!” and they might take it. You can also lose it if you put it on top because it could fall on the ground and someone might kick it or step on it. CMS should have bigger lockers for kids with locks. Why do lockers need locks? One reason is that if you have something that somebody else wants and you put it in your locker, and then go to your next class, someone can go into your locker and steal it. If someone takes it then you could get in trouble for not having it for school or for a class project.
PROTECT PLANET EARTH What humans have done to planet Earth is horrible. Think about it...In the whole universe there might another be Earth, the odds are high. Even if we do find another planet like Earth, we cannot afford to do the same thing that we did to Earth to the other planet. All the beautiful animals might disappear forever. Such as Birds, snakes, frogs, pandas, owls, elephants and lion. These are animals that you or your kids might not be able to see later on. Out of 23 kids, 17 kids said that our environment is being destroyed. I think public and communities should start to take action on global warming. You will learn about coral bleaching, radiation leaks and plastic

Coral bleaching is when the coral dies due to the climate change which affects the water. In this case, the factories are behind all of this. Most factories are built near bodies of water. This means that when the factories release gas into the air, the water takes it in. This contaminates the water which goes all the way to the coral. This makes the coral die. This is really bad for the fish in the sea because now the fish don’t have a home to live in. Many fish have died in this time of global warming.

Something that also destroys the environment is plastic and chemical leaks. Many leaks of radiation and chemicals has happened throughout time. Radiation leaks have happened in Pripyat, Ukraine. The firefighters took immediate action but had to work in short periods of time to not get skin cancer. Unfortunately, all of the firefighters died even though the firefighters worked in short periods of time. Today, Pripyat, Ukraine is a deserted area. No one lives there. In the hospital basement, Derek Muller, a physicist, went down
