Agriculture and Livestock Apps - Changing the Face of Farm Management Smart phones and tablet computers are a popular craze among the younger generation. These forms of mobile computing devices are reaching the farm and may help manage an operation throughout the year through specific applications (apps in modern technology lingo). For producers who want to use their smart phone or tablet computer beyond just checking e-mail, texting or browsing the internet, here’s a list of some agriculture specific apps with descriptions and compatible mobile devices. Agronomy Apps Ag PhD Field Guide. The Ag PhD Field Guide helps you to identify problem pests out in your field. You can browse weeds by name or by photo. The Ag PhD Field Guide also gives you the most up-to-date agronomy information through the FMC HatchTrak newsletter and the Ag PhD University. (Android, iPhone, iPad) Free Fertilizer Removal By Crop – Ag PhD. A reference for you as you plan fertilizer applications on your farm. Simply select your crop and the desired yield for that crop, and you will be given the amount of vital crop nutrients that your desired yield will need. Results can be saved within the app and e-mailed to yourself or your agronomist for later reference. (Android, iPhone, iPad) Free Planting Population Calculator – Ag PhD. Aids you in determining planting population and stand counts for the crops on your farm. (Android, iPhone, iPad) Free Harvest Loss Calculator – Ag PhD. Helps you determine how much of your crop you are leaving in the field after harvest. Simply select your crop and input the number of seeds/kernels you count on the ground in a square foot. The app returns a harvest loss calculation in both bushels per acre and pounds per acre. (Android, iPhone, iPad) Free agSeedSelect – Monsanto. agSeedSelect makes it easy for you to find the right seed for your field. Create, store, email and print a seed guide tailored specifically for your geography and crops. (iPad) Free Agrian Mobile Information Center. (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad) Free Aphid Speed Scout – University of Nebraska. Speed scouting is a different way to determine if soybean aphids have reached the 250 aphids per plant threshold. It relies on the number of "infested" plants. Plants are considered "infested" if there are 40 or more aphids on that sample. No more having to try to count all the aphids on a plant to determine whether it has reached the threshold of 250 aphids per plant. This helps you quickly determine — yes or no — whether the plant has 40 aphids and would be considered “infested.” It then recommends further scouting or treatment options based on the number of “infested” plants in a given area.
