THE SECRETARY’S SECTION By George Heib

We had a great meeting on 23 October, and only missed three of our Council members due to other commitments. General Sacolick and his deputy, Col Irizarry were in attendance and contributed a lot to the meeting. We wish to congratulate them for their nomination for two star and one star rank, and thank them for their interest and support of the Museum, and our efforts. Unfortunately, our Curator, Roxanne was out with a bout of the flue, but she is now back with us and going strong again. The members of the scholarship committee Stayed for a separate meeting and are in the process of re-writing the instructions for applicants. It should be posted on our website by the end of the year

THE CURATOR’S CORNER By Roxanne Merritt During the last four months, we have been busy reworking the War on Terror gallery. The entire area has been wallpapered to give it ambience and we have rearranged the cases to better tell the story of SOF in Afghanistan and Iraq. Over the course of the last fiscal year – Oct1, 2009 to 30 Sept 2010, we had 45,781 visitors and accessioned in 91 artifacts into the collection. Our PSYOP collection is growing. COL Tasler has ensured that we now have pieces of obsolete PSYOP equipment such as the MSQ-85 used from Vietnam until Bosnia. Luckily, we have the additional storage bay where we can maintain this priceless piece of regimental history where it is out of the elements. As we are redesigning the main gallery, we are working to somehow work a part of the MSQ-85 into the exhibit plan. MSG Joe Beck, now retired, unfortunately is suffering from ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), has, over the years been one of our most prolific donors of PSYOP material and information. He has come through again. Before his most recent operation, he, his wife, his brother, and his brother's wife made it a point to bring us by a dramatic piece of personality portraiture of Saddam for the collection. The Iraqi artist was destroying all the paintings he had left, but gave one to Joe. We have had it stretched on a canvas frame and hope to have it on display by the end of the year. He has also offered to allow us to go through his vast collection to ensure we have a good core collection. When healthy, he actively participated in WWI, Kore, and Vietnam reenactments as a PSYWAR and PSYOP soldier. We've also continued to get more material on Civil Affairs. We had nothing on the World War I occupation of Germany, but have since received from Alexander F. Barnes who has written about the occupation copies of photographs from his research. This led us to a signed copy of MG Henry Allen's book My Rhineland Journal published in 1927. What makes this acquisition more special is that Allen had inscribed it to his eldest daughter, Jeanette. The photographs and book will find themselves a part of the new exhibits on World War I when we redo the gallery. Another researcher contacted us concerning MG William Marquat, the father of the US Army Civil Affairs School. It turns out that Marquat, an avid baseball fan, used baseball to help in the rebuilding of Japan. Instrumental in reestablishing the game in Japan after the war, he brought in folks like Joe DiMaggio and other luminaries to work with the various teams. Mr. Dahlberg, the researcher, has graciously sent us copies of photos and will keep us in mind as he does further research on the subject. We really rely on this type of generosity. I am often asked why don't we have this or that on exhibit. My reply, on more than one occasion, is that we would exhibit the material if we had it, but we can't mount an exhibit for material we do not have. I of course, then quickly add that if the requestor has material they could donate or photographs we could scan, we would be thrilled. Sometimes this works and we get material, but more than often than not, we don't. Currently, the date for the dedication of the Kennedy and Yarborough statue donated by H. Ross Perot is 8 April. We will keep you posted. We are still looking for anyone who participated in the demonstrations for the president, gathering stories from that visit as well as items.

Since the last Musing, we have inducted COL Joe Cincotti, LTC William "Bucky" Burruss, SGM Danny Pitzer into the Special Forces Regimental Hall of Fame.

Betty, Lois, and Becky THE APRIL MUSINGS MAILING (LICKER STICKER) SESSION

On Saturday, 31 July this stalwart band of Licker-Stickers came together at the Canopy Lounge to put together the Musings for mailing: Standing L-R: Joe Lupyak, Pete Morakon, Norm Heib, Ralph Loff, Mike Simpson, Roy Bradford, Wes McKelvey, Tony Campochiaro, Bob Gilstrap. Seated, (and holding Bronze Doughnut Awards) Bill Palmer, Frank Jaks, Walt Campbell, and Bart Brown. Your Editor made number 14 and was doing the camera work. The Doughnut Awards are for doing the Licker-Sticker bit for 12 mailing sessions (three years), It is awarded in Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum , Ruby, etc. At the present time we have seven Bronze and two Silver recepients. SPECIAL FORCES FACTS When asked what is the rarest award that a soldier can receive, most people say “The Medal of Honor”. Actually it is the third award of the Combat Medical Badge s only two soldiers (not from SF) have received that honor. The next rarest award is the third award of the Combat Infantry Badge of which there were only 308 that are recorded at the Infantry Museum. Of that 308 there are 35 of our SF comrades who have received this honor (Bold print, underlined). Although we have checked this list with a lot of fellow SF friends, we may have missed some. So if we have missed any names let us know. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.

NOTES FROM THE EDITOR By George Heib

Sorry this last issue of the year is a little bit later than usual. It was due to the fact that I had to be out of town, and the assistant secretary had a dental problem that had to be taken care of. We then had to set the meeting back two weeks. This issue marks a milestone as it is the end of 14 years since our first publication. Now all we can hope for is to keep it going for another 14 years. Fortunately, all the contributors to the various sections of the Musings are keeping us supplied with data in a timely manner with very little prodding and pushing. It makes it easier that we have the same Advisory Council, and Executive Board for the next three and two years. You might also note that we have changed our Masthead, by adding Civil Affairs and Psyops to the title, as we are officially a Branch Museum for all three branches.

The Editor Museum Musings is the official publication of the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare / Special Forces Branch Historical and Museum Association. The opinions expressed by the writers and editor are entirely their own and are not to be considered as official expression of the JFK Special Warfare/Special Forces Branch Museum or the Department of the Army. It is normally published four times a year. Submissions may be sent to the Editor prior to 20 January, 20 April, 20 August, and 20 October. Annual Memberships are still only $10.00 per year and expire on 31 December. Life or Century Memberships are $100.00. TITLE NAME PHONE FAX E-MAIL PRESIDENT BILL PALMER 910-436-9499 [email protected].
