This week’s programme is all about Cup football, with both the men’s & women’s premier leagues on hold this coming weekend as cup fever comes to the South.

Round 1 matches locally, with last year’s semi-finalists Dunedin Technical and Otago Uni both receiving R1 byes. That leaves Division 1 Mosgiel to take on heavyweights Roslyn Wakari, and Green Island travelling up to Queenstown.

Round 1 of the Chatham Cup sees eight matches across the region. Interestingly, only three of these will be in Dunedin cut any talk of favourable draws for the city teams!

Make sure you get out and catch some of the cup action - there’s always a chance of something crazy happening!

With all of the Southern Premier League teams (except Southland Utd, whose players will instead feature for their local clubs) in action, you can’t deny the interest in a match like Caversham playing Green Island at Sunnyvale - that should be a cracker.

This week’s cover image is from last Sunday’s fantastic Southern United Academy match day at Forsyth Barr Stadium - remember to check out some of the videos and photos on social media (I’ll have a pretty neat 5 minute film online later tonight).

But the real beauty of the cup is some of the other matches that get drawn how about Grants Braes travelling to South Canterbury on Sunday to play Geraldine at the local domain?

Remember, I’d love to include any quality content from readers in future programmes - especially any photos that we could include. Flick anything through to my email.

Northern, Roslyn Wakari, and Mosgiel all get tricky ties out of town - at the very least, it can make for a fun road trip, but they’re all the sweeter if you manage a win.

It’s tight at the top of the Southern Premier League after Round 5, with three teams tied on 10 points.

In the feature match of the round, Playoff contenders Roslyn Wakari and Caversham battled out an enthralling 2-2 draw at Ellis Park.

Queenstown had the weekend off with the bye, but still sit atop the table on goal difference.

Roslyn raced to an impressive 2-0 lead in the first half, before goals to Michael Hogan and Ben Wade salvaged a point for the defending champions.

Dunedin Technical are just one goal further back after defeating Mosgiel 3-1. Veteran Andy Coburn scored a brace, including one from the penalty spot, with Tim McLennan scoring the other. Regan Coldicott scored a consolation goal for the plainsmen.

Green Island racked up the most impressive win of the weekend, consigning Northern to a 7-0 defeat. Former University midfielder Chris Kessell grabbed a hat-trick, while Max Johnston and Matt Brazier both bagged a brace each.

Southland United bounced back to winning form to join those teams at the top, scoring a 4-1 win over Otago University under Friday night lights on the Turf in Invercargill.

The Chatham Cup has been New Zealand’s premier knockout tournament since it was first contested in 1923, when local team Seacliff famously won the trophy.

At that point, it was run on a regional basis, with the champion from each of the South and North islands contesting the final. Seacliff was primarily comprised of staff from the Seacliff psychiatric hospital, and after hammering Oamaru Rangers 7-0 in the regional final, they defeated Wellington’s YMCA in the final at Athletic Park in the capital. The Cup itself was gifted to the then New Zealand Football Association in 1922 by the crew of HMS Chatham as a token of appreciation for the hospitality they had encountered on a visit to New Zealand. The actual trophy is modelled on the FA Cup. The HMS Chatham was a light cruiser built for the British Royal Navy, and survived World War 1, before it was later loaned to New Zealand. Dunedin’s Northern AFC won the trophy twice during a period where they were arguably the strongest team in the country. They held the trophy aloft in 1959 and 1961, and were losing finalists in 1962. They had been on the losing side in five other finals between 1927 and 1953.

8

In 1981, a strong Dunedin City lineup won the trophy, defeating Mt Wellington 3-1 in the final at the Basin Reserve. Michael Glubb scored twice for Dunedin, with Terry Wilson also scoring. Mt Wellington’s side featured a certain Ricki Herbert. Of course, the most recent southern success was when Dunedin Technical lifted the Cup in 1999, emphatically beating Waitakere City 4-0 in the final in Auckland. Striker Aaron Burgess was awarded the Jack Batty Memorial Trophy as the final’s outstanding player, after his exquisite lob sealed the win.

The National Women’s Knockout Cup never had much of a ring to it, did it? So good on New Zealand Football for making a brave move and re-branding it as the Kate Sheppard Cup. New Zealand Football Chief Executive Andy Martin said Kate Sheppard is well-known for being a pioneer for women in New Zealand history and it is fitting, and a great privilege, to have the trophy named in her honour. “The name Kate Sheppard is recognised around New Zealand and it is great to have her name associated with this competition,” said Martin. “The tagline for the competition in 2018 is ‘Make a name for yourself’, in recognition of what Kate Sheppard achieved in her life, and also what we want the players in this competition to aspire to. Dunedin Technical went on a record run in the Cup last year, hosting eventual winners Glenfield Rovers in a semi-final before falling one match short of the final.

Earlier this week, our ISPS Handa Premiership squad had an end of season awards function, celebrating the great progress that was made throughout the 2017/18 national league season. As well as awards for Coach's Player of the Year and Players' Player of the Year, there were three awards selected by you, the supporters - thank you to the 236 people who voted online! A huge thank you to everyone who has been a part of the Southern United journey this season. You couldn’t get a better setting for a coaching course anywhere in the world I reckon - New Zealand Football and the Football South team have been running an intensive 3-day Junior Level 3 coaching course in Queenstown over this weekend. Congratulations to everyone who took part.

Another frustrating game for the 3 Div men's team yesterday. We came up against an evenly matched University team, who were able to put pressure on us early by having quick counter attacks that were tough to manage. Like last week we were only able to come away with a 2-2 draw. POD goes to Finn Cahir for scoring a double - Daniel

a good game and a well deserved win for the Teckle boys. We have some catching up to do before the rematch next round. Well done to all our guys for sticking with it despite being under the pump for most of the game, and congratulations Teckle, you’re a well drilled outfit at the moment and will be a tough nut to crack for any team this season. - Andy

4th div Lions had a tough day at Sunnyvale. Started slowly and down 2-0 after fifteen minutes. Played a bit more structure and kept that score line at half time. 3-0 down after 20 minutes of second half and couldn't string things together for attacks. Lost our shape in the last 15 minutes and ended up 6-0 loss. At least it was a nice day. Pod went to Ryan Botting who kept going all day. - Wayne

45s came out and done the club proud today with a 3/1 win over the league winners Green Island. Great weather conditions today at the Grove and an epic battle on field. Great leadership at the back from Laurence held our shape and dominance in midfield and saw Shane find the back of the net from a great follow up from a deflection off the keeper in the first half.

Our Chinese FC 4th division side played Roslyn at Bayfield park at 12:45pm today. First half, ended up at 1:1. Second half was action packed and full of goals. Roslyn got a goal in the last minutes to make it 5:4. Joe got 2 goals, Gavin got 2 goals and Simon got 1 goal! Well done everyone on what was a very challenging game. - Joe

But in great form GI kept pressing us with a few shots on goal but we went into the break 1 nil up. 2nd half we really dug in and kept them in their half most of the game and got 2 stunning goals from Mike to see us out to a comfortable lead but in true GI fashion they never gave up and pulled 1 back.

GB Masters 35’s came up against a strong and table topping Melchester Teckle team today. Two goals in each half saw the teckle come through 4-0 winners. Some great ball control displayed by the Teckle guys and to be fair we spent most of the game inside our half. So much so at one point I considered offering their goalie a cup of coffee he had so little to do.

We held on with some good phases through the wings but couldn't find the back of the net again 3/1 win in the end in a very tough enjoyable game Well done guys ...good recovery from last week - Rob

We did have some rare forays into their box in the second half, and a magnificently struck free kick by Creedy, around the wall and into the bottom right corner was saved by their goalie with one of the best saves I have seen in last few seasons. Some feeling out on the field today but 22

The first division team played Northern at Ocean Grove yesterday afternoon and came away with a 2-1 victory. The side started slowly with Northern creating a couple of early chances that they fortunately couldn't make the most of. The team looked dangerous on the break and had a couple of one on one chances that were unable to be finished. It remained 0-0 at half time. The team went 1-0 up shortly after the break, scoring from a set piece, the result of some good early pressure. Northern were able to bring it back to 1-1 shortly after from a break of their own. The winning goal was a tidy finish by Ethan, chipping the keeper from a ball played over the top. There were some nervous last moments of the game as Northern pushed for an equaliser, but the team were able to hold on to the slim lead and take away three much needed points. POD Adam Sutton. - Robbie

windy Rotary Park. Smurfettes started off great and had majority of the possession. Eventually Alice decided to take them on and fight her way close enough to score our first goal. Ninjas decided to start to play at that point and started to play some nice passing football created some good opportunities for themselves. Certainly had our defence working hard. 1 nil Half time, chocolates and mandarins at half time a great combination apparently. 2nd half, pretty even until Aria did what she did last week. Dribbled from our defensive Retreating line all the way to the other end, then Smashed it past the keeper. Who possibly still hasn't seen it!! Ninjas must have been inspired by that and stepped it up a bit putting one past our keeper Laura with a 3 on 1 situation. Where was our defense? Resting at half way!!! Sophia finished the game off with another lovely run and slotted it past the keeper to make it 3-1 to the Smurfettes.

Jnr Team(s) of the week - Smurfettes Versus Ninjas 10th Grade Derby Match The 10th grade ninjas came up against the smurfettes this morning on a very brisk rotary park pitch.

Our POD was Laura who is developing into a extremely brave wee keeper!! Well done to the Ninjas players you guys did well!!

The first half saw the smurfettes all over it but our boys held their own especially in the 2nd half having most possession! We came away with a 3-1 loss but so proud of the boys for their perseverance & determination! With a great wee goal (the first for the season) from Hunter S & some great ball skills & determination from Taylor which earned him player of the day! Well done Taylor! Well done ninjas also you all played like a team can't wait for the rest of the season! - Jolene

GIAFC Prem. Men The Prem’s had a 7-Nil win over Northern with all the goals being scored in the first half.

the throat again, readying himself for tech next week. Shout outs Fletty, Todd, Josh Mac, Bobby and all the subs that came on awesome lads, it’s a squad game fellas. Well done. Also shout out to Roslyn’s keeper Tessa Nicol fantastic display of brave keeping.

GIAFC Prem. Women The premier girls played University 2nds at the Caledonian. The pitch was in good condition considering the rain we had last weekend. It was a tough game to play let alone watch as both teams made hard work of proceedings.

POD Josh (the throat) Hook - EKS Women’s Reserves Div 1 With depleted numbers (hopefully Roxy and Ash survived the hens do) sickness and injury, we had 9 regular players available. Huge thanks to the GI Thirds coach and girls for supporting the team after they played and loaning us 3 players. Nil all at half time the game was evenly balanced.

However a good second half performance saw us come out on top with a 3-1 win. Good goals all round from Erin, Jess and Bee. POD Tahlia Roome at left back. Men’s Div 1 Here is another winning report.

Uni 4th came out and nicked a goal from just outside the box to take the lead. Our girls kept their heads up and within 15 minutes equalised after some great pressure from Nat on their centre back (captain) on the goal line. She won the ball back, turned and scored from the goal line almost an impossible angle but just show what persistence gets you. The play was end to end with both sides having chances and looking for the winner. Unfortunately we conceded a penalty and they scored. The girls had a couple of chances late on but couldn’t find an equaliser. Massive commitment but Final score 2 - 1 to Uni.

We played Roslyn today, under great conditions pitch was really playable. First half we where under the cosh a little with Roslyn’s aggression and aerial bombardment. Which we coped with reasonably well. But unfortunately we went 1 down. Pretty much to the run of play. We managed to get one back just before half time through Cam Scott. Some nice build up play finished off with bit of a scramble.

POD Zoe O’Farrell.

Second half we made a tactical change which won us the game bringing on Lewis wall and John Mitchell we then juggled the pack, and for 15 mins we ran the Roslyn ragged. Lewis wall, Bobby firmino (Oscar) and Cam Scott backed by Josh Mac laid siege. Cam getting his second and Josh finishing off a naughty bit of skill from Lewis. Naughty indeed.

Men’s Div 2 Playing against Roslyn this week who sat equal on the table with us we hoped for a close game. However starting the game with only 10 players meant our back were against the wall from the start. We quickly conceded which lead to bang, bang, bang and we found ourselves 4-0 down pretty quickly. After a quick reshuffle the goals disappeared for a while. Coming out for the

Roslyn slowly imploded, but give them there due they got back into it, with more bombs. Boys at the back defended well. Josh Hook got a foot to 24

second half was all about being mentally strong and trying to get some positives from the game. After a couple more goals from Roslyn and an own goal from a corners it wasn’t looking great.

nately it was back to battle stations in the last 15 as northern pinned us in our own half for large chunks of time. 5-3 final score with Goals to Hamish Courty and Gus.

We managed to bag one goal back from a corner. Congrats to a good Roslyn team and to Steve for making it thru the full 90 mins. Our youth again stepped up and was outstanding.

POD Gus and Courty Women’s Div 2 The Green team had a 2-1 win over Roslyn Kaimanuwa Good all round performance creating plenty of opportunities and restricting Roslyn to not many. Very solid game from Emma Cooper and Jude Hodge.

POD - Cameron Sinclair who again played his heart out and is crying out to be noticed for higher honours. Some might say he was the best Sinclair on the field that day.

Just the goal scoring to work on at training this week.

Men’s Div 3 With 6 regular players out, it took a while to gel as a team today. We were under the pump for the 1st 45mins and northern took a well deserved 1 nil lead into the half. A few changes in the way we played saw us pick up a couple of goals at the start of the half and a couple of set piece goals should have sealed the win. Unfortu-

I hope that WE, the community of football in Otago, wake up and start making intelligent and long-term strategies so that we can give the opportunity for our young talented players to flourish and reach their potential. If not, we OTAGO footballers will only be a little mouse trying to beat a lion from other provinces.

Our 1st team played against Green Island AFC and lost 7 nil. Well done to Green Island for the excellent performance as well as for being an 'On-Off' field role model Club in Otago. This was another excellent opportunity for us to test our capabilities and to measure how much we have learned. Based on the results we can say that we are far from the ‘master stage' of learning or the stage where you can apply a great level of football in any different environment conditions and against any teams. We made some tactical changes at half time and this proved key, with the second half being a 0-0 affair.

Once again, well done Green Island. MOTM Levi. - Luiz The seconds played against Grants Brae's and after being 1-0 down early on, pulled one back to make it 1-1. A brain explosion which was described as "like playing the 2 minutes of game when you're a goal up, only we were level and it lasted half an hour" meant we conceded a second and eventually lost 2-1. MOTM to James.

Once again, I am taking the responsibilities for this result because the strategies that I have applied so far have exposed my players to their limits and this can be quite painful. However, by being exposed and learning from our mistakes is the only way we are going to survive, evolve and then transform ourselves to be a ‘lion' one day.

The women took on Roslyn and produced what was probably the best performance of our season to date. We finally notched up our first goal of the year with coach Ian Ross saying "I love it when a plan comes together" with Jess finishing a great through run by banging an absolute worldy. The 6 goals Roslyn scored shaded this somewhat, final score, a 6-1 loss. Though some great patches of play where we shut them down and strung some good passages of play. WOTM Jess.

Unfortunately, one of the big mistakes of many teams in Otago is the archaic, unattractive, and retrograde way of playing football. In other words, a team that just uses as its main strategy a ‘counter-attacking' way of playing will only be good enough to win a few battles but will never win the war. As I mentioned yesterday in the Green Island AFC Club House, this way of playing is like giving a lot of sugar to a child with the result that, momentarily the child will be very happy and hyper but in the long term it is extremely detrimental.

Thirds were looking to continue on from their great win last week but lost 2-1 at Logan Park against the high flying University outfit.

Green Island grabbed it. 3 quick goals after half time put the Dribblers on the back foot and the game rounded out 5-3 loss for the lads. MOTM the ginger pole, Cam.

The Frogs looked to defend the mighty Lily Pad that is the Gardens in the first senior match on the pristine turf. With the DCC crew doing a bang up job of filling in the tyre marks of last week, the home of football was surely one of the best pitches to play on. In a must win, bottom of the table clash, Dunedin Tech opened the scoring early in the first half following some strong early pressure. A heavy deflection taking the ball past stand-in keeper Markham's legs. The Frogs took the hit to heart and started to create some chances, Dave and Jamie putting a couple wide after getting into some create positions. Late in the first half, a barnstorming run from our left back and lovely interplay led to the defender being on the edge of Tech's box, unselfishly squaring the ball to an unmarked Dave who coolly slotted the equaliser.

The Lawnmowers went up against some agile young'uns and lost 5-3. The over 35's returned to winning ways, and the smug grin returned to Aaron's face, he claims he's "not smug, just superior", beating Caversham 3-2. After going down 1-0 early on, it looked like more points could be thrown away in their hunt for back to back titles, however, the boys pulled themselves back and bossed the game from there. Brownlie and Aaron missed a host of chances but Roche bagged a brace and the win. MOTM Frenchy.

A very evenly matched second half meant a few chances at both ends went begging. The Frogs though, keen to keep the home lily pad a fortress like Westpac stadium in the Ricky days, snatched a goal as Bini beat the offside trap and dribbled the ball past the onrushing keeper to make it 2-1 and secure the Frogs second win of the season. Frog of the Day - Dave. Duck of the Day Kubir - who had one job, to keep the time, and couldn't manage that. For more behind the scenes action facebook.com/northernfrogsafc/

Finally, the Masters "were hungry for the W but went down in the first half". They kept the ball much better in the second half and eventually ran out 3-2 winners. MOTM Graeme Hunter. Wayne is reported devastated due to a change in the sourcing of the club pies (Cheers Steve from Who ate all the pies!) as he no longer gets to make his Saturday morning pilgrimage to Couplands.

The Dribblers started in their common form, nabbing an early goal against a good Green Island team. The boys went in at HT still 1-0, but as Coach of the Year Will explained to his troops, "it's all about momentum" and 27

A trip down south to Invercargill to face the Southland United squad started off a big weekend for the University club, with for the first time this season the remainder of our teams all in action.

and were quite surprised by the quality of the team they faced. Generally had the better run of it and were ahead by two at the half and having missed a penalty from Coach Skellett and Frank having cleared one of our own shots off the line we should have been out of sight. Struggled to finish the game off and allowed Northern a goal back which made for a tense finish.

Travelling down on Friday night, Darren was able to call on a reasonably strong squad and also a merry band of supporters to take in the trip. Southland have improved technically this year and presented a tough fixture. A slow start had us chasing the ball a lot and were lucky to be only down by one at the half.

A trip to Ellis Park to face 1888 is always a highlight for our teams with either quality football or a brutal physical outing on offer. This week was more of the former as a set of 8 quality goals from both sides saw honours finish even and Fourths still having a bit of work to do to stay in touch.

Got back in to the game in the second half and managed to sneak a goal via the livewire Harry Gaskin, our celebrations were short lived as Southland scored off a corner which might not have been and then finished us off with two late goals.

Struggling for numbers this was gonna be the week that Men's Fifths struggled to take all three points and predictions played out as the fitter Grants Braes side for the second week in a row took points off our club. A late chance to super sub Fraser Towers (you'd put your house on him scoring from 5 yards unmarked..) was fluffed.

A battering last weekend for Men's Seconds meant they need to forget that game and move on with their first trip to Hancock Park on Saturday. A pretty decent performance through the first half, including a full 30 minute effort from Jack Campfens saw us up by two at the half. A goal to each side and a penalty which we converted and were then call back for encroachment or dissent (unclear which one) were the highlights of the second half. A good way to comeback from a horrendous last game.

Men's Sixths are a new side and don't quite know what to expect in the league, and a trip down to Balclutha against a physical and experienced side was a bit too much for the boys this week. The boys are loving the football and learning heaps each week.

Men's Thirds had a local derby with Northern 28

Back to back losses for Women's Premiers wasn't really the start that we wanted and our first game at home saw us face a strong Roslyn team who had experienced a bit of an up and down start.

Came out with more purpose in the second and were threatening down the wings but struggled to string things together in the final third. Lost another goal via a long ball from the keeper and finished up with no points a bit frustrated.

Under pressure early we found our pace 15 minutes in and started to assert dominance particularly via midfield, which meant the front three of Erin, Meike and Britney-Lee got a lot of the ball and chances started to come. A quality combination between Meike and Britney-Lee got the first and nearly a couple more.

Deflections also impacted on our Women's Thirds as struggling for numbers meant the team lack the normal strength and cohesion. Were denied what was thought to be a fairly straight forward penalty and hit the bar twice. Ended up going down 2 nil as we couldn't convert any chances which came our way.

Came out from the half and put the foot down and were soon four nil up with the offside trap being beaten twice and Emma using great footwork inside the box. Had some more chances but of most importance was to soak up the pressure and keep the clean sheet.

Women's Fourths travelled out to Green Island and on the back of some good results so far this season took a lot of confidence in to the game. Played some nice football all around and managed to take another 3 points as our 2 goals bettered Green Island 1. Another great result for our new women's team.

Women's Seconds had a few deflections this week so ended up with the bare 11 and a substitute keeper, conceded early on via a quick break but managed to get one back fairly quickly and played some nice stuff. Went in to the shed 2-1 down after switching off.

Caversham 1st XI vs Roslyn Wakari 1st XI Quote from after match -

plan and the Cavy lads did that and had opportunities to score but could not find the net. Proud of how the lads kept moving the ball and stuck at it. Nearing half time and Varsity's Caleb Roberts latched onto a long ball, the Cavy defender got on the wrong side and Roberts made it 2 zip heading into the shed. Mmmm.....

"first half Roslyn good , second half Roslyn average"

"first half Caversham average , second half Caversham good" However to claw your way back into the game after being 2 nil down (against a good side) and arguably having the better of the chances in the second half Caversham showed huge resilience and fortitude at Ellis Park. It shows that when you believe and stay with the cause things do happen. Positive, positive positive. - Match Observer

Second half started with aplomb and a resolution to get in amongst it. Keane, Ince and Robson would have loved the attitude of the team that wears the same coloured shirt. Players stepped up, the back four of Barlow, Collings, Gardiner & Mazure were stronger and were ably assisted by midfielders Hadida and Derkin. We looked good going forward and again had space in the attacking third. The Schmeichel (yes, you look at him!) like Varsity keeper was solid and kept Cavy out until the 63rd minute when Tom Durkin squeezed one home reminiscent of Andy Cole scoring against Leeds in '96 - 1 to 2 and we are back in it. Turbo Tom, Atwood, Cookie all worked hard but we could not break the sound defence of the Varsity side. Coaches are never happy to concede but when we do, it is slightly easier if it is a special moment. After pressing hard for a long period of time (United vs Bayern in '99 - lol) Varsity broke down the left, crossed a wonderful ball into the second six yard box where Michael Webb rose like the Ronaldo against Chelsea in the final of '08 and beat his marker to place the ball in the top left hand corner. 1 - 3 to the visitors.

Caversham 2nd XI vs University 2nd XI At home for the second week in a row, the youthful Cavy side wanted to continue from where they left off the week before. Football, bloody hell it can be a cruel game and as Brighton turned it on against Man U in the weekend, this was a new look Varsity team that played on Saturday. From the outset it was evident that these sides were organised and wanted to play football with both teams keeping the ball on the deck and building pressure. It was difficult to think of anything other than the famous Sir Alex Ferguson quote to sum up the opening 20 minutes - "It's getting tickly now squeaky bum time I call it". Such was the equality of that period, cut and thrust, who will make the first mistake - yes it was riveting. A bizarre penalty was awarded to Varsity in the 24th minute and was nearly saved by the Cavy gloveman, then the resulting goal was disallowed by the Ref, and the resultant free kick allowed Cavy to clear. Unfortunately most goals come from a mistake and it was University player Trent Lynch who latched onto a loose pass and calmly chipped the Cavy keeper Sean Dartnell from 20 metres out. Pre match talk was of sticking to the

The thing that can be admired about this young Cavy side is that they will not give up and they deserve praise for having the fortitude to keep battling. The final score may well have been 1 goal to 3, but the display of passing football from both sides was evidence that this will be a tight competition, and that is a good thing. We will remain positive in the way we play and we will get results. 30

A shout out to the ref, young fella that he is - he had a good game, thanks Caleb.

student. His uniform gleaming, his shorts tickling his laces , hands lost in a shirt three sizes too big. His 45 minute cameo was something to marvel, unflustered, elegant, technically gifted his passing was crisp his positional play precise. In the 49th minute Campbell Thompson was taken down in the box. He got up and scored from the spot, as cool as you like, no doubts, just maturity beyond his years. The volume of possession grew in the second half. At times the passing and control was mesmeric. Mornington over the last few seasons have been a well structured team. Cavy struggled to pull them out of position. There was something missing, the cutting edge, that little moment of magic, the penetrating pass, the movement around the back, the Chi Campbell 'sock draw' finish. Mornington were resolute.

To the Cavy young charges - “The experience of defeat, or more particularly the manner in which a player reacts to it, is an essential part of what makes a winner.” Guess who said that? May Sir Alex regain his health quickly. - The Red Devil Caversham 3rd XI If the Edmund's Cook Book had a recipe for a footballer two of the main ingredients would be 'technical ability' and 'game sense'. These qualities are distinctly different. One a drilled function from regular practice the other comes from a different place, somewhere more spiritual, game sense is a higher force, formed from experience. You can't make 'sense'.

Mid way through the second half the Cavy midfield were caught in possession. They were too high and the ball fell to Moses, he was wearing a blue shirt. The sea parted - they strolled through unchallenged, the game, all square. The Mornington winner was not quite of biblical proportion, but it was a wonderful curling free kick from 22 yards, placed into Matt Hessian's top right hand corner.

In football you don't score points for technical ability. Not many sports do. Most people reading this match report would not consider Figure Skating a sport. Their governing body dropped compulsory figures in 1990, but They still have a panel of judges that score 'Grade of Execution'. If this contest had been played at Badminton over a three day event, Cavy Thirds would have been out of sight after the dressage. The first half finished goalless. The lack of penetration and front line threat, a complete contrast to the previous week, it was a constant issue for Cavy in the first half.

There are times in a game of football when there are little shifts in balance. The momentum moves in one teams direction. In these moments players with game sense make the difference. For Cavey, in this match, only one or two players had the ability to recognise these moments. Caleb Osborne, at right full back, stood out - out standing. He possesses game sense. It is when you inherently know that something has to happen to change a game and the time is now. It is when you realise that possession is being held more securely, you can push on, make that run, create that chance. It is time to gamble.

This very young team gets better and better at ball retention, the two experienced centre backs of Mawhinney and Wilkins would have had the most touches, they controlled the tempo of the game feeding the high full backs and the midfield the interplay improves every week. For the second half Wilkins did not return, he took a head knock in the 3rd minute. Toomin dropped in at the back and Spencer Gable made his debut. He looked like a first day high school

With game time and experience this young Cavy 31

team will acquire that game sense.

good finish to everybody’s mate, Tony. Northern put the Cavy defenders under a massive amount of pressure and eventually it paid off, with a dubious decision seeing one of their men put the ball in the back of the neck. We held on until the break and had a real belief that today was our day. Late in the second half Northern made a charge down the field which resulted in them going 2-1 ahead. This was disappointing for the boys but I am glad to report that we didn’t get our heads down, even after Northern struck again and took the lead to 3-1. The last 10 minutes the Cavy boys lifted the intensity and worked really hard to get one last goal near the end which was a great finish from Randal. Final score was 3-2 in what I would consider a very close and well fought match. Of course the match report can’t end there as special mention has to go to our POD in Dave T aka forgetful Dave, who was tireless and solid all day, and, of course, we need to mention Ross who at one point kicked off for the opposition, a definite WTF moment (Mark in goal had plenty to say about that)... um, yeah... Bruce

Caversham 3rds 1 : 2 Mornington "The Eminent Welshman" - check out the translation. Caversham Women vs Roslyn Wakari Shetlands Caversham Women faced Roslyn Wakari Shetlands at Tonga Park in a tightly-contested fifth round match. The soft track and long grass at Tonga made things difficult for both sides, but both teams created plenty of attacking opportunities in the first half. Strong defence and good keeping meant neither side was able to capitalise on the chances created, and the teams went to half-time locked at 0-0. The second half started in a similar fashion, with both teams evenly contesting possession, however the Shetlands soon started to control the attack as their better fitness came into play. The Cavy women dug deep, but a good run down the left from the Shetlands resulted in a well-taken first goal. Cavy regrouped, but a well-timed substitution for the Shetlands resulted in two further goals. The Cavy Women continued to attack and were unlucky not to score, denied only by the post. A few things to work on from this match for the Cavy Women, but overall a great effort and a lot of grit shown in our toughest match of the season so far. Thanks to Roslyn Shetlands for a great match, and thanks for joining us at Hancock Park clubrooms after the match. POD was Donna Weir. - Jemma

No, that’s not an ocean view at Tonga Park last weekend...

Match report for Caversham 35+ vs Northern Sometimes when you turn up for a game you have a disheartening feeling that you’re going to be handed a spanking, at the hands of the top team in your grade. Unfortunately for Northern, this wasn’t the way that the Cavy Masters were thinking and within 10 minutes we scored to go one nil up, due to a perfectly timed run and a 32

Last Friday brought us back on track in a really nice evening to play football! After 2 complicated weeks away we naturally felt under the pump to give a response and put us back on top of the table. We were expecting a young Uni team, full of energy and without any pressure to get points and it proved to be right. Uni plays a very interesting football and they are a positive team especially on the ball, always trying to play and keeping every single player involved in the game. Our players gave a great response in the first half, with very dominant football, high pressure, and a great personality on and off the ball showing that we were there to get the game sorted in the first half. Great performance from Yuta, Schipper and both full backs in the first half kept us in the last third for the majority of the 45 min and a good balance to keep Uni far from our goal. We had plenty of chances to get at least 3 goals before half time but it wasn’t a lucky day and at half time we reinforced the importance of scoring another one to play then a more paused football. The reality wasn’t quite like this and we went back to the second half without the patience that we had in the first 45min and obviously some players didn’t cope with that intensity which is normal. In the middle of the second half we felt that our team lost that dominance and some players had no more time give so we made the first change and immediately after we consent a goal after a ball loss in the middle and a good counter from Uni. With 20 left to play we had the maturity to chase the result and we scored immediately after. After that Uni felt that goal I reckon and we got more space wide and behind their back 4 and we ended up scoring 2 more. We felt that for what we produced in the first half the score was too short and in the second half, in the

only moment we made a mistake they score. Fortunately the lads had the attitude to respond and didn’t get any pressure after Uni’s goal. We have now a 2 week bye due to Chatham Cup and the league bye, which isn’t a great scenario but we will try and get ready for Roslyn’s away game in the next couple of weeks. - Luis

Southland Utd U15s - Round two saw us on the road to Roslyn. We started the game on the back foot conceeding after only 6 minutes. Our GK failed to deal with a back pass and the Roslyn striker pounced. Although we had plenty of possession in the opposition half we failed to convert this into good goal scoring opportunities. Roslyn were dangerous on the break but for the second game running Spencer Cunliff was a rock for us at centre back. Second half started with a moment of brillance from Left Winger Oliver Pilsworth to put us even. A rocket of a left foot shot from out wide caught the Roslyn GK off his line. This was the moment that sparked us into life and take control of the game. Connor Black put us in the lead at the 52nd minute mark from a corner and this would be his first of three for the day, his next two were also scored from close range. Raphael Meurier also added to the score sheet with a fine effort from the edge of the box. Final score 5-1. Cameron Johnson put a power load of work in upfront and Corbyn Fletcher had another impressive outing at Left Back. Although our first half performance wasn't great I am really impressed in our attitude and work rate in the second half. The more we train, travel and play together the closer the team unity is. Plenty to work on and this also includes the playlist in the van! Onto next week as we look forward to hosting Maori Hill Red. - Stephen Black

A stunning season for the Southern United Futsal team just got even better, with the Futsal National League champions named as a finalist in the prestigious Otago Sport Awards.

The Darren Hart coached side swept aside all comers to win the country’s biggest Futsal trophy in an exciting finals series in December. It was an incredible effort for the team, which often had to endure difficult travel schedules as they competed in the series in the major centres. The team is one of just three finalists for the Team of the Year, along with fellow national champions the Southern Steel netball team, and Southern Stampede ice hockey team.

Star Michael Sannum was named the league’s Most Valuable Player

The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony at the Dunedin Town Hall on May 18. The awards cover the year from 1 April 2017 to 31 March 2018. The ceremony will also feature a special tribute to five-time supreme winner Hamish Bond, the rowing champion - turned - cycling star.

What a year - good luck at the awards ceremony guys!

2nd half GI went more direct and we conceded 2 goals and we’re hanging in. Managing to pull a goal back through Kasim, but couldn’t find the deserved equaliser. Good Performances from Fraser, Jez and Dom but POD to Matt Cordelle.

With the sun out this week it was looking like a great day to take the field. The Prems took the field for the last game of the day, finally getting a home game at Ellis Park. Going up against a strong Cavvy team who never give up it was going to be a tough day at the office. We were up 2-0 at the half and working on a plan to contain the lead. It was a great first half for us but a better 2nd for the Cavvy team replying with 2 goals for a draw.

The other GI team went up against our 3rds. After a couple of poor performances the boys played with better intensity Dan Baker and Shep controlled the mid-field.

Not the result we wanted but taking a point is still good. Excellent performance from Shay after his head knock. But is was practise makes perfect with Tennessee Kinghorn taking POD.

The passing game was evident and this resulted in a few good goals. The back four were rarely stressed. A good result, we will take the win and look forward to the next week.

Roslyn Premier ladies took on Uni A at the Cale. We would find ourselves having a good bit of control over the game at the beginning, pressing high and great movement all round. Uni started to get on top and really stayed in control via the midfield. We worked really hard in the game, trying to keep shape, sadly we didn't find the back of the net today while uni would take a 4-0 win. We had plenty of opportunities within the game , moments of brilliance, just was not to be today. Feeling bad for the ref attempting to referee premier league in one point control when it clearly needs 3 point. Our Z player of the day went to Morgan in goal for her endless hard work. Cup day football next week vs Mosgiel.

Still at Ellis Park our 1888 hosted Uni. The boys stepped up today and dominated most of the game putting a lot of pressure on the opposition team who were 10-15 years younger then most of our guys. Brownie was immense up front getting 3 goals and Lippy popped up to score a tap in. Boys were unlucky to draw with some decisions going against us in the last moments. Thanks to Jack Maf for filling in from Youth team. POD goes to Lippers for his efforts even though he gave a penalty away.

2 Roslyn teams travelled over to Bayfield Park. This had the Chargers against Melchester. Despite the scoreline the Chargers had a great start against top of the table. For 20 mins we were in the game and challenging hard, then an unlucky rebound dropping at a strikers foot had a 1 down. The heads dropped, and intensity dropped, going into the half 0-3 down. Words were said, 2nd half had the guts running out of steam, we worked hard till the end. Thanks to Melchesters Sam B for a great display with the whistle and POD going to Aaron.

Strong GI contingent at the club today. The 2nds started the game very well. Went 1-0 up in the first 5 mins. Dominated the 1st half playing nice attacking football and should have been 3-0 by half time. Returning player Dave Midgely got injured 5 mins before the break and had to be subbed. GI hit us on the break to score so halftime produced 1-1 scoreline. 36

The Mustangs started proceeding at Bayfield against the Grants Braes Dunedin Chinese FC.

In our women’s league. The Rogues went up against Northern. It was a good even game. Went into the half 4-1 up. Our young goal scoring machine picking up all of those goals.2nd half with great performance which showed great team work. Aimee scored a screaming header. But Eva took POD for the game and for her Birthday.

They went out ready for a hard fight and it was there’s to take. Rob took the whistle in the first and by the end of the half we had put back an early response to there opening goal with scores at 1-1.

The Shetlands played Cavvy and again the game was a strong and good game. With more opportunity but we just couldn’t find net.

2nd half started with Mustangs up against it. But unfortunately the lads were unable to claw back the winning goals. Tough battle which did not reflect our 4-5 loss, after PJ got a brace, Eddy and Alex both grabbed a goal. POD to Oliver for his performance in the Backline and also a special mention of the Maxwell Family support Crew who appeared in numbers today.

2nd half had the girls step up to take 3 goals. POD was Aliesha. Kaimanawas against GI at Walton Park. The ladies went up 1 nil when Trudy flanked up, cut into the field and slotted Ut in the corner of the goal. But 2 goals were conceded. POD went to Hannah in Goals.

Originals had a 1-5 loss to Highgate Hobbits. Goal to Charlie with a bullet of a header and POD to Kenny. And hope Smarty’s ok after taking an (intentional!) kick to the jewels.

Chatham cup and the newly named Kate Sheppard Cup rounds will be happening over Saturday and Sunday. Let’s make sure if we’re free we attend these games.

The Master grade had our Colts go up against Mosgiel at altitudes. They game was played in great spirits with a stoppage in play so they could check on players. unfortunately the backline wanted to get in on the goal scoring opportunities, this meant that Mosgiel got the chance to put 2 in the net. 8-3 win with POD going to Benno.

Giddy Up Roslyn.

The Stable Hand

The Moas also played up at altitude, and it may have taking a hit in there fitness. We had 4 subs on the bank and Tech only managed to supply the bare 11. The game ran at 1-2 down for a while and while fighting to get the equaliser, in the final whistle Tech clinched the winner. Thanks to Danny for running the whistle, POD going to Minnie. 37

Prem Men Playing Mosgiel, on a Tahuna Park surface that was under water earlier in the week, Dunedin Technical started brightly and were 2- 0 ahead at the break due to an Andy Coburn brace comprising a well taken penalty and a far post header.

A couple of changes at half time and we took to the field with more purpose and intent.

Mosgiel came out after halftime with plenty to play for and enjoyed a spell of dominance that was rewarded with a penalty. Regan Coldicott comprehensively tucked the opportunity away.

This took the wind out of Mosgiel’s sails somewhat and there then followed another ten minutes of decent attacking football, with Luke Fraser and Ash Watson looking dangerous combining on the left flank and Paddy and Michael Bergin doing the same on the right.

We managed an equaliser early in the half thanks to the head of Taine Bailey. Cam Thoms got another followed a minute later by Paddy Koppert.

However Technical rallied towards the end of the game and were able to reassert control. A Tim McLennan strike from inside the box completed the scoring thus allowing Tech to register a 3 - 1 win.

During one of these attacks Mosgiel managed to hook a clearance into the oncoming path of a charging Justin Flaws who volleyed a 35m worldy into the back of the net. Judda was met with a big celebration by the lads, an indication not only of the quality of the goal but of how much he is looked up to in the team. The goal capped a man of the match performance by the veteran, who worked hard directing the team in the middle of the park and shifted the balance of play to a eventual win.

Fletcher Cup Memorial Park was in nearly mint condition with no wind and the remains of the morning dew on the surface for the early kick off. Great conditions for football. Mosgiel came out with passion and intensity and rightly punished us for a couple of individual errors, going 1-0 up within five minutes.

Presidents XI Chasing that ever elusive 3 points the Presidents XI cannot seem to capitalise on opportunities.

During the rest of the half Mosgiel seemed happy to hand over chunks of possession as they dropped a bit deeper but kept their shape and looked to hit us on the break. Tech probed but lacked purpose in the final third.

Soaking up the pressure early on we played a lot of ball in the Northern final 3rd. After putting the pressure on them Tech struck first in the 17th minute with a goal through midfielder Zane McEwan.

As the clock ran down to half time, Mosgiel launched a couple of counter attacks and we were lucky to go into the sheds only one nil down as they missed a sitter before the whistle.

We started lacking the fight to keep the pressure on after going up early and in the 38th minute 38

we handed Northern their equalizer.

for the rest of the season. Unlucky, mate.

Into the half tied 1-1 the team echoed their own opinions of what wasn't working and went back out with the desire to force the ball.

After winning a corner, Daniel Anfield stepped up to take it and scored directly; an absolutely 100% legit goal on purpose, this display of vision and intent saw The Weasels take the lead.

Northern broke the deadlock half way through capitalising on a soft bit of play going up 2-1 and taking away 3 points.

The Weasels could have had more goals, but just to change things up a bit, decided to concede instead as the score became 1-1. This, however, was all a part of the plan, as keepin' it spicy is something that The Weasels never fail to do as The Weasels demonstrated why the match brought in record viewer numbers worldwide.

We are playing great football and contesting everything but need to find the desire to play 90 minute football and we will be getting the W's The Weasels The Weasels made their way to the pristine fields of Culling Park today to face their toughest challenge so far. Playing the second placed Mornington Misfits, The Weasels looked to increase their lead on top of the table with an important six pointer.

Refusing to go into the break without the lead, The Weasels increased the tempo and created many threatening attacks. The pressure finally paid off as Will Guthrie's determination saw him tap home to finish a goal that can be summed up as 'an absolute mess but we'll take it'. After the whistle blew for half-time, the lads gathered around to talk tactics. Just as you'd expect, the second coming of Christ - Roger Dunn - dished out some miraculous revelations about the game. Humbled, The Weasels set themselves up for the second half of their holy crusade.

The Weasels were unfortunately without some key players today. Knowing their strength in depth, and having star signing Nick Hatton and fan favourite Tim Wight among the subs, the team was ready to face the boys in blue. Early in the proceedings a combination of really tidy and really tinny footy began to emerge. Despite a few dodgy touches and misplaced passes, The Weasels created some good football and put on some pressure.

Blasphemy aside, The Weasels clearly came to a unanimous decision that scoring more goals is a bad idea. Several chances were thankfully drilled far far away from the goal. Showing a differing opinion, the Misfits obviously realised that scoring goals is not just the objective, but also a good idea. The Misfits evened the game up at 22.

Daniel More, whose moustache is considered illegal in thirteen countries, made some brilliant solo runs through the opposition. Though he created many chances, he struggled to convert, showing why he will remain as a defender

star man Nick Ritchie went down awkwardly on his ankle and was taken away in an ambulance. Reports from Dunedin hospital confirmed a broken ankle. Fortunately Weasel skeletons are infused with adamantium so he's expected recover quickly and be at training on Tuesday.

mace by the whole team that keeps us in the race in what is shaping as a very tight league this year. Colt 45s Colt 45's ventured up to Brockville to take on the Roslyn Moa's. Great start and we were 2 nil up and playing good footy. Roslyn took the one chance we gave them through a mistake in the back and we went into the half 2-1 up. Second half was always going to be tough with no subs, but the lads dug deep and our back four killed any attack. Wade scored a screamer with the last kick of the game another 3 points for the Colt 45's, good feeling in the camp as he's off the nudie run. POD - Rochey, solid game at the back.

Eventually the referee signalled the end of the game, which ended two goals each to two sides that both showed their qualities today. The silver lining is that if The Weasels won all their games, the movie about them would suck. 'The Weasel Way', starring Danny DeVito as Roger Dunn, is out in theatres summer of 2018. Colt 35s It was as expected a good, hard tussle at Memorial park with the Gerries, as always it was played in a competitive and physical spirit with both sides starting strong. Plenty of early exchanges with both teams going close. Our squad has been stretched with a mountain of injuries over the past few weeks but in true Colts tradition new players and recruits have stepped up and donned the Maroon with plenty of passion and skill. Jimmy, Davey, Rob and Andrew all had storming games and are great additions.

The Frotters The Frotters played Northern at Culling. Conceding a soft first goal, the Frotters pulled ahead at halftime 2-1. A goal line scramble drew the game level. Until a goal keeping howler let the visitors take the win 3-2. POD was George Stamou.

Matty was on target and causing plenty of problems and was rewarded with a well deserved 3 goals, taking him a few clear in the race for the coveted golden boot. Paul Henderson was rock solid in the centre of defence as always and kept numerous attacks at bay. Final score was a 4-1 win. A great all round perfor-

Prem's v Tech 1st half was relatively even both teams created a few chances. Tech went ahead through a penalty on 20min ish after having a goal disallowed for offside moments earlier. Andy Coburn got a good header from corner unmarked. 2nil ht. We stepped it up a gear after break. Cam fouled in box which Regan converted pen with 30min to go. Both teams still having chances 2nd half. Regan scored a header off fernando cross to tie the game up -only to be pulled up for offside. Tech clinched game with 10 min left.

through a played move that Dre finished. Constant pressure saw a 30yrd Beckham strike tip over the bar in a great save. Clarkey hit the side netting two goal mouth scrambles that tech managed to clear and a missed chance right on half time that Scolesy wasn't able to keep down. Second half began brightly and Nando almost had us further ahead. Changes made for guys heading to Prem game changed the complexion of the match as tech enjoyed a 20 minute purple patch and got ahead with a couple of nice finishes. The lads were outstanding in commitment and effort and if we had the rub of the green we could have won comfortably. Solid in defence and midfield and energetic up top. Will entertained us late on with a mark Richardson style leg cramp after clearing off the line and brother Harry taking man of match with a great performance down the left side of the park and creating lots of opportunities.

Women's team got back to winning ways with a good hard fought 2-0 result against a very mobile and quick Uni 3rds. GK Grace made 2 superb saves in the first few minutes and Raegan scored perhaps against the run of play. From a Raegan free kick Lauren P scored from a GK fumble. 2-0 at the break Zoe and Mark ran the team from the sideline and the changes made worked well. The ladies scrambled very well in the second half to keep a very hungry opponent goalless

3rds v melchester on very windy Bayfield. We were hoping to carry on from our 2nd half from last week , we were down 3/0 in the 1st half . Melchester had the wind and caught us on the break twice. We played some good footie with Ben and Ahmed in the middle. Ollie hit the bar and Ben the post in the first half. Another series of bar rattlers in the 2nd half let Melchester off - the wind dropped 2nd half - Ollie scored a stunner up front , Melchester bagged 2 then Cam came up front and scored a beauty, we going down 5/2 POD went to Ollie for playing in a position that he hasn't played before and getting a goal

POD Bridget Young for a very good performance up front Well marshalled by Birthday Girl Courtney From all the squad HAPPY 21st ;-)

Fletchers welcomed AJ back to the club and with numbers now he was thrusted into the line up with Scoles moving out wide and putting in a tireless shift. started brightly and delivered an exceptional first half taking lead 41

The Gerries 35 v played Tech Colts 35's and we went down 2 nil early and then came back in last 20 mins of 1st 1/2 but couldn't score for love or money so 2nil at the half then they snuck another one just after the break then we were pressing for good periods of 2nd half but just couldn't finish anything then on the counter they got a 4th so with the forwards not be able to find the onion bag Timmy bangs a screamer in from 40yards so final score 4-1 credit to Tech took their chances well and we didn't POD Tim Gibson

a man of the match performance for the 16year old. Player/coach Chris came onto the field and his presence proved poor inspiration as Northern clawed two goals back before half time with Mosgiel still holding the lead at 3-2. The rowdy northerners continued to press after half-time but Mosgiel caught them on the counter early to give a two-goal cushion. Hayden then stepped up to make a triple save from what seemed an easy tap-in, but his work was undone when a cross/shot sneaked in moments later to field-wide applause and Olympic standard flips and cartwheels from Masters where in disarray v Roslyn Colts with 6 Northern players. players away we were down to the Bare Bones and had to call in a couple of favours. playing Mosgiel were on the ropes so Daniel decided to Roslyn is like playing Manchester united- they step-up a gear and some nice interplay on the are that good but fortunately like United they wing let him clip a perfect cross for Liam to only turn up for 45 minutes and we smoked volley in for 5-3. That’s how it stayed with the them in the second half. Anton scoring at will 4ths claiming their first win of our first season in with 2 but coulda been 5 . Chop with a superb senior football. MOTM Fouad, with secondary dink with outside of his boot. We won the awards for Hayden and Mohammad. Fun game second half - you'll find the full time result in played in great spirit - thanks Northern! CW the upcoming Guinness book of records under spankings pod was Brendan with 2 assists Faced with the prospect of player/coach Chris going in goal, pre-game nerves were tense for Mosgiel 4ths with flashbacks of his terrible performance in game 2. To the rescue - Hayden Tumaru! His claims of never playing in goal were not enough to save him the pleasure of taking place between the sticks against Northern. Looking for our first win of the season, the interplay proved effective as we surged into a 3-0 lead within 20 minutes following scintillating attacking play.

Fouad opened the scoring in what proved to be 42
