Course code: B1155 Course category: Full-time End Qualification: UAL Level 3 Diploma in Art and Design Starting and ending month: September to June Course duration: 36 weeks Time of day: All day Formal assessment: Formal assessment required Course location: Pelham Campus Course aims: You will be interested in all things visual and particularly in the use of cameras to produce photographic images. The course will introduce you to both traditional and digital photographic techniques and processes and develop your visual awareness. Through developing an understanding of visual concepts such as composition, use of perspective and experimenting with the way light and shadow impacts on how we see things, you will start to develop your own visual language. Furthermore, you will gain an appreciation of the work of other photographers and artists, which might also influence your personal development. You will achieve a technical understanding of using the darkroom, working in a studio situation and of digital image manipulation. The Photography department at City College is staffed by practising professional photographers and it attracts an eclectic mix of students covering a broad age range. The method of delivery is module-based, with assignments set every term and lively debates and critiques which help students identify the strengths and weaknesses in their work.

The skills that you learn include studio lighting, dark room skills, printing from negatives, scanning from negatives, hand colour printing, digital printing, using medium format 35mm SLR cameras, film cameras, large format cameras plus digital practices such as Photoshop to produce digital prints. Historical and contemporary contextual studies help to underpin the practical work Courses concentrate not only on assessments but also on portfolios. You will therefore leave the course with a strong body of work to show to universities or employers. The photography end of year show also showcases student excellence to potential employers. Facilities for students: We do expect that students own either a digital or film 35mm camera. The course has 4 studios spaces equipped with tungsten and studio flash lighting kits. You will use light meters and reflectors, tripods and sync leads. There is also a black and white darkroom with 18 enlargers and 4 printing developing sections to enlarge prints. Other facilities include a computer suite with Adobe Photoshop and 2 Nikon high resolution negative scanners. Course modules: • • • • • • •

Assessment: There are three stages to the course with the final stage being assessed pass, merit or distinction. UCAS Tariff: Pass: 36 Merit: 60 Distinction: 84 Awarding Body: UAL Entry Requirements: 4 GCSE's at grade C or above (or equivalent) There will be a portfolio review which includes a presentation, tour and review of your portfolio. However, those who previously made or still have employer links are encouraged to maintain them during the course. Free Study and Financial Support All full time courses are free to EU residents who are under 19 years old on the 31st August 2017. The only fees you have to pay are for specialist resources and equipment and the cost of these varies from £25 to £300 depending upon the subject you are studying.
