Physical Education Use this tip sheet to complete the Physical Education section of the HUSSC: SL application. Below you’ll find an explanation of the criteria requirements as well as some ideas for what you can include on your application. Good luck!

Physical Education Criteria Elementary Schools • Bronze/Silver: My school meets a minimum average of 45 minutes of PE per week*. • Gold: My school meets a minimum average of 90 minutes of PE per week*. • Gold Award of Distinction: My school meets a minimum average of 150 minutes of PE per week*. Middle Schools (All Award Levels) • My school offers structured PE to at least two grades. High Schools (All Award Levels) • My school offers structured PE in at least two courses. *Schools can use structured physical activity for part of the physical education time requirement. If your school provides structured physical activity that is moderately intense, takes place in ten minute increments or longer, and is planned by a PE teacher and implemented by a classroom teacher or administrator, these minutes can count toward your physical education requirement. Example: 45 minutes of PE class twice per week and 15 minutes of structured, moderately intense, physical activity breaks planned by the physical education teacher (4 days) = 150 minutes (Gold Award of Distinction)

Application Examples: How Does Your School Provide Physical Education To Students? Elementary Schools • 45 minutes of PE once per week (Bronze Level) Description: Instructor delivers a diverse and age appropriate physical education course to every full day student. A few examples of these activities are aerobics, team sports and relay games.

Middle and High Schools • Students participate in PE class twice per week for 45 minutes. Students learn basic techniques and rules of a different sport every two weeks. • Students in grades 11 and 12 are offered the option take the following fitness classes as electives: Yoga, Strength and Weight Training, Dance 1, Dance 2, and Swimming.
