Pitch in on Earth Day!

For your laundry, try borax as a fabric softener instead of disposable dryer sheets, which emit hazardous air pollutants. To still get that fresh laundry smell, throw a washcloth with 3-4 drops of essential oil in the dryer with your clothes.

olunteers are needed for CVSan’s Earth Day Clean-Up event on Saturday, April 28, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. CVSan is planning to assist at least 13 school and public sites with clean-up and beautification projects this year, and we need your help! Volunteers who work at least 2.5 hours have the opportunity to select one of three Castro Valley organizations to receive $5 on the participant’s behalf. In 2017, Earth Day volunteers planted plants, spread mulch, picked up litter, pulled weeds, and earned $1,495 for Castro Valley charities. Register to volunteer at www.cvsan.org/ED.

Revisions to Code & Capacity Fees

Volume 27 Issue 1

We’re Always On!

S

ince 1939, CVSan has been providing the community of Castro Valley with uninterrupted, high quality wastewater services. That’s almost 80 years! From the wastewater treatment plant to the pumps and pipelines in your neighborhood, we are committed to being “Always On,” and available whenever you need us. Although issues

VSan recently updated the Code, including minimum design requirements for new extensions to the sewer mainline and abandonment of private sewer laterals. Other modifications included adjustments to the capacity fees charged for new Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), such as a backyard cottage or basement apartment. Fees for ADUs will now be based on the number of plumbing fixtures. Accessory structures such as garages, greenhouses, workshops, and other structures not designed as dwellings will no longer be subject to capacity fees, but still may require an inspection permit.

How to Recycle Batteries

S

ince February 8, 2006, it has been against the law to throw any batteries into the garbage, recycling, or organics cart, due to the toxic chemicals that can leak from them. Residents with blue recycling cart service may place used household (alkaline) batteries in a sealed clear plastic bag on top of the

blue recycling cart on their regular collection day. If you find alkaline batteries on the ground or run over by a car, please carefully pick or sweep up as much of the battery fragments as possible, and follow the steps described above for recycling collection.

VSan is partnering with Oro Loma Sanitary District (OLSD) on yet another innovative and forward-thinking endeavor, the Wet Weather Outfall and Nutrient Optimization Project. This project will include upgrading existing facilities and installing new equipment at the wastewater treatment plant to improve

nutrient removal from the wastewater. The project is currently in the planning stages, and a contractor is scheduled to begin work in late summer 2018. Visit bit.ly/NutrientRemovalStudy for more information on the project.

Overflow Emergency Response Plan

C

VSan’s Overflow Emergency Response Plan (Plan) was developed to guarantee a prompt and appropriate response to any sanitary sewer overflow (SSO). The Plan consists of trainings and drills that familiarize the members of CVSan’s Collection System Maintenance Department (CSM) with the tools and knowledge necessary to prevent overflows. When an SSO is caused by a severe rainstorm, the most effective tactic CVSan’s CSM Department uses is a bypass system. In these cases, a bypass pump enables water to flow around an obstruction in a pipe or aids in reducing heavy water flow caused by a major storm. |
