Role of ideas. Client demands. Market. Factors that have influenced the evolution of yacht design. They define the range of action of any project and the parameters within which ideas can be developed. These considerations all illustrate the incredibily complex but fascinating role played by yacht designers whose job it is to give a form and a function to all of the aforementioned factors. But theory is one thing and practice quite another. In this issue practice is expressed by actuality composed of various stylistic languages. All different things, but united in affirming the principle of a diversity that has now become a stamp of uniformity..

2016 is going to be a year full of changes for Studio Zuccon International Project. Seven new watercrafts designed by this roman studio are currently under construction by Gruppo Ferretti. Studio Zuccon has been charged by Ferretti Yachts with the redesign of the whole array in the space of three years. Bernardo Zuccon, architect and designer, is showing us two new projects for Ferretti Yachts: the first one will be the entry level, Ferretti 450, while the second Ferretti 850, a 26-metres-long craft characterised by sporting lines, available in two different versions; they will be both presented at the Yachting Festival 2016 in Cannes. Moreover, beyond two other projects for a 90 and 92 metres long boats presented during the last years, Zuccon SuperYacht Design (the department of the roman studio Zuccon International Project dedicated to megayachts – directly curated by Bernardo Zuccon, son of the very well-known Giovanni and rising star in the field of yacht design) is working again on a very ambitious project on a superyacht of 94 metres, 94mt Teti, indeed.

How could the designer’s practicality in the nautical sector be defined? Which aptitude should mark the activity’s profile?
Architecture Hospitality Outdoor Luxury Yachting Wordplaces Retail
PW PLACESWEB CONTRACT
The role of the designer in the nautical industry is strategically important. It is fundamental, as we learned during our long experience, not to stop at the aesthetics, guaranteeing an enjoyable appearance for its style, shape and proportions. Our job takes care of technical and functional features too. We see the boat not just as an object, a sculpture to be moulded, but especially as a space conceived to allow people to live well in it. All of this presumes the existence of a large number of elements that the designer needs to take into consideration and guarantee, in order to support the shipyard completely. As for the current historical period, it is a period of rebirth after dark years for the nautical industry and the Italian shipyards in particular, during which many companies were wiped out and the ones that were able to remain had to change to confront the financial crisis. The approach of the operators in this sector is necessarily bound to this fact. Therefore, the role of the designers is strategically very essential, because they must create something intriguing – may it be linked to the project or the formal or typological aspects – that can guarantee the shipyards to offer products able to reawaken the clients’ interest, being them fearful in returning to invest in the yachting industry. The designer has to be clever in starting a research programme, so that he will be able to offer new opportunities to a market that is virgin again and needs to be encouraged to set in motion. At the same time, the designer has to balance the bound to the tradition and the experimentation process.

Please describe us two of your new projects for Ferretti Yachts, Ferretti 450 and Ferretti 850.
Ferretti is experiencing – as many other shipyards are – a period of rebirth, especially concerning the range, after the slow-down due to the crisis. The Ferretti 450 and the Ferretti 850 represent a further demonstration of how the shipyard is investing in the creation of new contents that can renew the brand’s appeal. Both the yachts marry the philosophy, which belongs to the designer and the shipyard as well, of modernising the product in terms of aspect and style, without losing the bond with the story of the brand. The Ferretti 450, in particular, is a long and complex project on which Ferretti has invested a lot.
21
22
We created, for the 450, a flexible layout with two or three cabins. The owner cabin, at the centre of the boat, is truly full beam and benefits a comfortable height, despite the small dimensions of the yacht. With the Ferretti 450 we wanted to create a product with a marine aspect, using natural materials and soft colours that give the guest a sensation of wellness related to the sea. The great transparencies contribute to this marine appearance, favouring the idea of living the boat in a deep connection with the sea. Today, in fact, the trend (which we tried to reverse) is to design the yachts without the typical characteristics of a boat, following the idea of them being like floating houses. I am quite against this idea: I am convinced that a boat must have some formal, ergonomic and stylistic characteristics that confer it an appearance very different from the domestic one.
YACHTING / INTERVIEW WWW.PLACESWEB.NET
“
The Ferretti 850 is important as well. It innovates a segment of the Ferretti range that has been very strong and had several successful models. The 850 tends to recover many elements of this segment, modernising them, trying to give the product a higher ‘tension’ of the external lines and a more sportive character. The use of a different chromatism in some details enriches and defines the shapes and the volumes.

“
Architecture Hospitality Outdoor Luxury Yachting Wordplaces Retail
PW PLACESWEB CONTRACT
As far as the 94m Teti project is concerned, how did you manage to solve the issue of the constant search for an equilibrium between outdoor and indoor areas?
The most important aspect of the 94 mt Teti is the typological experimentation, that is to say a research that aims to review and reinterpret the traditional planning of boats, being this one the field in which very little innovation has been done – or even not at all. Usually, when you get on board, the feeling is to already know the path, because the plan is always the same. The Teti is the proof of the will to revert some traditions on board. Particularly, this happens in the relation between internal and external space, following the will to intensify the relation with the exteriors, despite the 100-metres length: usually, the larger a boat is, the further we are from sea, but on the Teti we wanted to enhance the dimensions maintaining a fresh and strong connection with the sea. We thought the Upper Deck as the focal point of action, where the majority of the daily activities onboard takes place and where we created a completely new scenario: together with a more traditional large table and pool area on the aft terrace, the bow area displays a second environment that develops in continuity with the internal dining lounge, and becomes then a connection element between the outdoor seating area and the second large pool, a sunny, large, terrace in the sun, in an area usually dedicated to technical operations. Also, the ability to move easily between the outer decks becomes an element of exploitation of the spaces themselves, in addition to guaranteeing absolute privacy to the owner and his guests.

YACHTING / INTERVIEW
Architecture Hospitality Outdoor Luxury Yachting Wordplaces Retail
PW PLACESWEB CONTRACT
In the current boating’s orientations the most recurring words are ‘luxury’ and ‘innovation’. Beyond any rhetoric and recurring event, which meaning will they acquire for the designer in the future?
I believe that these are two very delicate topics. From my point of view, there is an abuse of the words ‘luxury’ and ‘innovation’ in the nautical sector, and they are often misinterpreted. The word ‘luxury’, in particular, takes often a negative meaning, being considered to be almost a synonym for ‘elitist’. But this concept, upon the contrary, should have a deeper interpretation, more connected to simple things. Navigate for me is a luxury, as well as a well-designed boat is. It is all about the life quality: for me, one of the greatest luxuries is to have been able to build a home and a study that are only 5 minutes apart, being able to avoid the traffic in an overcrowded city like Rome. The designer must take it into consideration, unbinding the term from the economic sphere.
27
28
Moving to innovation in the yachting industry, I think it has, so far, not happened yet. A little of research has been done, but history demonstrates that the real innovation in navigation maybe hasn’t been done yet. Something has been done about the engines, with hybrid engines mostly, but elsewhere there are a lot of pending matters, such as with materials and their disposal. The real innovation is something that leads to an historic passing, something that allows to enhance the reality around the boat. In this direction should be moving the designer too. The consumes and the sustainability are just two of the examples that can be mentioned. We talk a lot about innovation, but in the reality we are very far from it.

ZUCCON SUPER YACHT DESIGN Zuccon International Project is one of the architecture and industrial design studios operating in the nautical sector, founded in 1972 by the architect Gianni Zuccon and by his wife Paola Galeazzi. In more than 30 years is has designed over 100 watercrafts for the most renowned shipyards. “Architecture has always been about the relationship between the designer and the Prince”. Following this idea Gianni Zuccon and Paola Galeazzi founded, more than thirty years ago, the architectural studio, known today as Zuccon International Project. The principle on which their whole work is based is, as it was centuries ago, to create a trust relationship with their customer (that is the Prince) that enables the designer to satisfy the Prince’s desires without giving up his/her own creativity. ZIP is a multidisciplinary studio: established in 1972 and grown constantly over the years, is currently active in several fields, whether engaged actively in the project or acting as a consultant, ranging from architectural to industrial design, from leisure yacht to automotive. Since January 2013 ZIP also has a new brand, exclusively dedicated to Super Yacht design: Zuccon SuperYacht Design

“AQUALITE” COLLECTION DESIGNED BY
ALBERTO APOSTOLI HTTP://WWW.ALBERTOAPOSTOLI.COM/ HTTP://WWW.NEWFORM.IT/
MONICA ZANI “Aqualite”, the collection designed by the architect Alberto Apostoli for Newform, got the interest of the audience during the Salone del Mobile in Milan.

Alberto Apostoli
Which was the main idea of this innovative project named AQUALITE? The collaboration with Newform arises from the company’s necessity of developing the range of Wellness articles. This sector is actually booming, above all in the private sphere. As far as I am concerned, I needed a partner with appropriate technical skills in order to develop new products, which should meet the needs of the public. The production in this field is still linked to a simple exercise in style, while the aim of Aqualite collection, inspired to natural water fall, wants to give back to this precious element its primal essence. What is the planning philosophy of this project and how did you develop the idea in the final product?

Could you describe us the project’s products? AL1 is a recessed shower head that blends into the architectural structure “floating” within the same. To achieve this effect, the two functions of the product, water and light, have been split. Their interaction is realized by a series of volumes, different in size, which result in a single body and give to the product an extreme stylistic lightness. We have then designed two taps and a diverter. AL2 is the switch that, integrates perfectly with the wall, revealing only two metal surfaces for the interaction with the user. The water control is managed via overhead commands that regulate temperature and flow rate, while a light bar communicates the temperature of the water, through the color change from blue to red. The frame as well as the control plates are available in different colors and they allow the product to merge with the wall or emerge from it. AL3 is the element which controls the water shift from head shower to hand shower, with "Push" system; this system allows the return of the button to the starting position at each selection. The frame and the switch recall stylistically the other pieces of the collection. Drawn on the AL2 switch style, also AL4 tap is characterized by the dematerialization of the form within the architecture, by integrating with the wall. Flow and water pressure are controlled through the two metal plates that swing inside the wall, marking the boundary between object and architecture. The faucet is completed with a thin slanted metal blade that protrudes from the wall by following the switch style and from which the water flows.
Are you planning new products for the Wellness field? During the last edition of Cosmoprof we displayed a new cabin designed for Nilo (Maletti Group). This cabin is made up of a massage table and a range of suspended and backlit elements. Besides the wall units, the cabin is equipped with a washbasin, a bioethanol fireplace and some loudspeakers. Each object is inserted in panels, in order to guarantee the perfect integration with the surrounding space. Our fruitful collaboration with Jacuzzi goes on. Sasha is by now an icon in this field; it has been developed in many versions and inspired many ‘similar’ products. We are working with Jacuzzi on an ambitious project, but now is really too early to talk about it. We have also an audio system for SPA areas in the pipeline, and a collection of lighting devices helping to solve specific situations. Personally, I would like to find a partner for the designing of stone or wooden objects. How would you define the bathroom area? The bathroom is the place where the union between body and emotions stands out. In the morning, when you just woke up, in the evening before going to bed, but also at other times of the day. We lay bare in our bathroom, both metaphorically and literally speaking. It is a place of equilibrium and awareness. Water is the symbol of all this and must be therefore the star attraction.

DARIO GAGLIARDINI
During the Milan Design Week, Brera Design District has hosted Dueacca by Verum Italy, where the innovative project signed by Adriano Design has been shown to the public. Revolutionary, compact, smart and environmentally friendly, Dueacca is the patented, innovative modular indoor and outdoor tap, which seeks its functionality in its simplicity, essentiality as well as beauty. The setting up, developed by Adriano Design, wanted to display both indoor and outdoor applications: a poetic meeting of the countless application and declination possibilities of this tap characterized by its flexible nature. Dueacca is a new way of perceiving and using the ‘tap’, which calls the tool, its function and its fruition into question, revolutionizing the concept of hydraulic system in order to offer a new interaction level with water. A tiny cube of only 50 mm in an alloy of brass defines the innovation and the modularity of this system, which is suited for being declined, interpreted, shaped and created to meet the needs of indoor and outdoor areas. Only four joystick blenders suitable both for indoor and outdoor spaces, applicable to the central body of a wide accessories range, allow to meet the requirements of the users and to create new functionalities.

Which was the inspiring idea of this innovative modular tap, suitable both for indoor and outdoor areas? Dueacca arises from the idea of a reduction of the ‚tap‘ to extremely low levels; this involves a reduction of dimensions, of the applied material and of its ‚shapes‘. Starting with these ideas, the project developed calling the ‚tap product‘ into question and reinventing it recalling ist own origins, when it was simply a valve.
How did you develop this idea in the final product? By working on the concept of valve as a modular element belonging to a versatile hydraulic circuit. We have therefore thought that we could create a versatile tap, suitable for indoor and outdoor locations and equipped with a series of accessories/apps, offering and inventing many new functions, even from the usage point of view.

We are talking about a flexible tap, which can perfectly adjust to many configurations and purposes. Could you describe us some of them? The chance of fastening a tap to a tree in order to transform it into a fountain or a shower is a new possibility which did not exist before, like the opportunity of stapling it to a bucket, transforming it into a sink, or clamping it to a railing creating a fountain or a shower. Dueacca is a sort of ‘Lego’ as it allows the creation of products and locations for an easy and free use of water.
How would you define the bathroom area? I would define a bathroom area as a versatile location you can always develop and change according to the client’s needs, without borders between indoor and outdoor, a space not bound to walled-in pipes or monolithic bathrooms which cannot be transformed. This is exactly the main idea that Dueacca bares always in mind.
Are you planning new products for bathroom areas? Dueacca is an ambitious project which considers a revolution in the water use (dueacca, the new form of water… wants to accentuate this changing model, alluding to a new formulation of impossible water molecule). It considers also many product development steps, which we are already planning and industrializing. They are going to be shown to the public very soon.

Adriano Design studio has been founded by Davide and Gabriele Adriano brothers. It was established in 1997 and has worked in collaboration with prominent companies at home and worldwide such as Foppapedretti, Scavolini, Olivetti, OGTM, Centro Ricerche FIAT, Bemis and Melitta. Graduated in Architecture and active as professors at the Turin Politecnico and Guest Professors at some prestigious Universities, both national and international, they have been awarded a number of acknowledgements among which the prestigious Compasso d’Oro ADI (the Golden Compass of ADI), IF Product Design Award, 2011 and 2013 Design Plus award, Designpreis Deutschland, the Good Design Award, the International Design Competition in Osaka, the Koizumi Award. Further to that they have been given the honorable mention at the XXI and XXIII Compasso d’Oro ADI. Their design range is wide and encompasses a manifold variety of different products, which they are able to lend a new twist, from the farmer tractor Multifarmer up to the ‘Rotola’ castors, and going through the ‘re-invention’ of the football table with Teckell, not to mention the famous ceramic stoves “Stack Stoves”. Their multidisciplinary approach to design brings them to work as global consultants for companies not only engaged in in creation of new products, but also interested in a general “re-start” involving design, communication, marketing and brand strategy. Thanks to their flexible way of working, they have been able to work with various client profiles, from multinational companies to small Italian family-owned businesses looking for innovation, and successfully planned and gave birth to several startups which are now grown to be international business realities. It has been thanks to this project philosophy that they have been received by the most prestigious museums worldwide, among which the Triennale Design Museum and the Chicago Athenaeum. In 2011 and in the honor of 20th anniversary of “Salone Satellite di Milano”, they have been invited to tell the story of their most representative woks of design. Their “Manifesto”, a reflection on contemporary, ethical, responsible and sustainable design was inked in this period. This is how the ever critics of the current models of “auto-production” and “selfproduced” goods, a model that converts designer into entrepreneur, set out to lay the foundation of “Coprodotto”, a new and revolutionary economic model which re-defines the relation between the artisan and designer.

This furniture collection highlights the handcrafted skills of the brand, capable of putting beauty and functionality into dialogue. Like the wall bookcase Style Set, entirely made of StoneOak®, with internal furnishings in three variants: bronzed, shiny and scratched.
Sofa and armchair, a contemporary reinterpretation in minimal key of Turkish sofas as well as traditional Indian beds, with metal frame, painted gunmetal or stainless steel AISI 316, which can be coated with a mixture of cellulose cord or waxed rope. The thin mattress are matched with soft roll cushions that serve as back and armrests, suitable both for indoor and outdoor locations. Dimensions: chair 120x100x59 cm, sofa 200x90x59 cm 240x90x59, DayBed 240x100x59 cm.
Collection with polished lines and Japanese influences which play on the combination of shapes and materials, such as the perforated seat in Iroko wood, the stainless steel structure, the marble floor, the pillows and the rounded rear supports. The table top is available in white Carrara marble and in new portoro black. By playing with pillows and backrests the uses of San can be multiplied. With a simple movement it can be transformed from simple bench or chaise longue to a combination of seat / bench.
Careful archival research that leads to new patterned fabrics. Three prints made digitally sophisticated design, representing a careful work of interpretation of the world and the Molteni & C quality declined in the world of textiles, with a clear reference to the local old tradition of silk prints.

MATERIAL STONEOAK® STONE ELM® THOUSANDS OF YEARS FOR A NEW AND INNOVATIVE MATERIAL

Two woods, new and thousands of years old, enrich the new collection 2016 of ZanusoLegno: StoneOak® and StoneElm®, two new wood testimonials, expression of two essences, which hundreds of years ago sank into the ground for natural causes. Fortunately layers of clay have covered this precious material and preserved it to the present day. Now they emerge. With all their load of beauty and charm, vital and fascinating signs, an incentive to create shapes and products recalling archetypal forms for innovative and forward-looking applications.
121
StoneOak® The name StoneOak® expresses its uniqueness, in facts it derives from the texture and the colours of stone. Trunks which have slipped beneath the ground as a result of landslides and upheavals of the forest area and were wrapped and protected under layers and layers of clay. Nature did the rest, preserving their hidden beauty. The anaerobic environment has inhibited the development of microorganisms
protecting and isolating the wood, thus preventing the inexorable process of slow degradation. Over the time the wood structural elements have changed and others have been added. Mineral salts have combined with the elements existing in the wooden matrix, gradually transforming its organic state. Now, after a long time, sometimes as a result of excavations and perforations, sometimes as a result of natural phenomena such as lan-

dslides or other movements of the earth, the logs emerge with all their load of beauty. Nature has protected them as precious jewels and made them unique. And unique are also their colours and the depth of their textures. StoneOak®, the natural, unique and precious wood is the material which ZanusoLegno proposes to designers, to make their projects exclusive.
