Last years events, such as the change in our lifestyle due to the development of new technologies and the new currency, are only two of the many factors which influenced our idea of travelling. Also the way we address to hospitality has changed: we don’t spend much time away and we avoid wasting money, but we demand modern facilities and services. In order to satisfy these needs people have tried to find an added value, something special and up-to-date. PLACESWEB, always interested in the development of the contract world, tautly represents all these innovations which reawaken the interest of clients. The renovation of an hotel gives the building a specific and unique look which will make it stand out in the vast hotel panorama. Novotel Madrid Center is an example of intelligent renovation, where an architect, specialized in hospitality design, expresses its creativity and reaches new solutions, which make objectives achievable: the skill of the professional is a point of reference in the new sector’s panorama and results in the development of ideas and solutions, even with a limited budget.

PROJECT FOR THE RECOVERY OF THE FORMER FOUR STAR HOTEL CONVENCIÓN IN MADRID. The global reform of the old Hotel Convenciòn, now Novotel Madrid Centro, represented the most recent intervention as far as hospitality is concerned. This happened in Madrid, the third European city by population (3.165.000) after Berlin and London. This four star hotel, equipped with 790 guestrooms and almost 7.000 square metres of public areas, 2.500 of whom dedicated to meeting rooms (23 multifunctional and of different dimensions), is the second hotel in Madrid by the number of rooms, and the biggest Novotel in the world.

PROJECTS / INTERVIEW

PAOLO MAURI Paolo Mauri, of Italian origins and Architect at Polytechnic University of Milan, lives and works in Madrid since 1997. He focused on Hotel Projects since 1999. He designed more than 50 Hotel Projects and he carried out co-operations with several Hotel Chains, such as Meliá Hotels International, Hilton, Radisson Blue, Husa, Hesperia, Tryp, Ilunion, Room Mate, in several countries, such as Spain, Portugal, UK, France, Italy and Honduras. He is linked to Grupo Plan since 2008 and he is part of International Hospitality Projects since its establishment, currently being responsible of the Interior Design and FF&E area. He inherited from his origins a sober and elegant style, jointly with an outstanding aesthetics sensibility, typical of the Milanese academic culture. The experience matured with the pragmatic world of hotel chains allowed him to develop appealing and functional projects. Thanks to his participation in large scale projects, often involving all technical specialties and multiple interlocutors, he matured remarkable projects mediation ability, being able to satisfy the expectations of all parties involved in the complex hotel project process. His experience in this field enabled him to give conferences at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, to participate in several Masters in Hotel projects at COAM (Collage of Architects of Madrid), on top of participating as speaker at several specialized workshops

PROJECTS / INTERVIEW WHAT WAS THE CONCEPT OF THIS ARCHITECTURAL PROJECT? The main aim was the will to return the city this splendid hotel. The building, with a U-shaped plant, occupies an entire block, built in 1978. It has a severe look, like that of a block of flats, and an inner access accessible from a covered passage crossing the two arms of the U which form a big inner square. These morphological characteristics, with the façade and the exterior architecture, make the appearance of the building quite homely. Another aesthetic drawback are the shops inside the hotel, which extend themselves along the perimeter of the building. They are independent and

have their own style. Who wants to walk along the perimetral pavement has no feeling of walking around a hotel. This was a great obstacle in the modern context, where the communication between parts is essential. The architect could not modify the façade, so the intervention concerned the possibility of unifying the language of external elements, creating a model look for the shops, and bringing out the car access. The purpose was to ‘humanize’ the building by transforming the big internal square. This area was dedicated to the arrival of taxi-cabs, cars, buses, and had a narrow and short platform roof, like

PW PLACESWEB CONTRACT

9 those of parking areas and service stations. Now it has become a convivial location where people can chat and make photos under the new, bright, beautiful projecting roof covering most part of the square. Its great dimensions render it a captivating architecture, catching the attention of pedestrians walking around the building. The first challenge was to put in contact the hotel with the city, creating a sort of dialogue between the exteriors and the inhabitants.”

PW PLACESWEB CONTRACT

10

After the focus on the building’s aspect, on its ‘dialogue’ with the city, we put it in a wider urban context: its centrality and its proximity to the most important cultural centres of the city (Prado Museum, Reina Sofia, Thyssen Bornemiza) and, above all, its vicinity to Madrid’s green space (Retiro Park) have been a source of inspiration to create a link to the final project, something more than just an idea, but a timeless link reflecting the life-style of the citizens and fascinating tourists: the big open spaces and the contact with nature. The square, icon of Madrid’s life-style, and the nature, timeless icon connecting the hotel with the Retiro park

PROJECTS / INTERVIEW

At the end of 2013 IHP won a contest for the total renovation of the building. This was organized by the owner: Santos family. The project should include every technical services that IHP is able to offer: architecture, engineering, design, internal equipment, the project and the licence management. During 2014 we developed many projects, studied a work strategy and decided that there would have been four phases (one during the hotel closure – 6 months, from May to November 2015). The team then announced a competition for the award of the work, which should start

PW PLACESWEB CONTRACT

11 at the beginning of 2015. During the project’s development the owners came to terms with Accor, through its hotel mark Novotel. This meant a considerable effort for IHP, responsible of the project in terms of aesthetic appearance. During the first phase (1/4 of the total surface) we have worked in 200 guestrooms and some public areas, like a new entrance at one side of the building, and the complete transformation of the restaurant, expanding the visibility from the outside and from the inner square.

The second phase was the most difficult one, both for the few available time (only 6 months, from May to November 2015), and for the bulk of the work (4000 square metres), affecting the public areas and 200 guestrooms. At present the phases 3 and 4 are in progress, then we will work on the two upper levels (the 7th and the 8th floors) which will host some areas dedicated to exclusive meetings, wellness and massage areas, a gym, an outdoor swimming pool, a terrace and a café. We would like to complete the work at the end of 2016, with a final investment of 30 million Euros.

PROJECTS / INTERVIEW WHICH ACTIVITIES DID YOU CHOOSE FOR THE INTERIOR DESIGN? The interior design project idea for the Novotel Madrid Centro arises from the will to put the hotel in contact with nature. The proximity of the Retiro Park was a motivation and an inspiration to face this challenge, both for the dimensions and for the state in which the hotel was, as it was never renovated since its opening, in 1978. The intervention tested our skills as a multidisciplinary team. Therefore, the interior design project has to dialogate with the service and infrastructural project, subject to a complete renovation. In every intervention the results of the coordination among our designers is highly visible.

oriented spaces and elegance. The cafè is the most transgressive space, with a great ‘videowall’ partition and a backlight cladding, catching the attention of people and inviting them to socialization. Its counter is 6 metres long, a steel piece marking the hall’s perimeter. If you look around you can enjoy the best view of the hall, that with its 80metres of length wants to give us a united message made up of natural elements. At the lower floor, big halls and vestibules become relaxing areas and open spaces, offering many configurational options, with 23 different rooms suitable for any event.

PW PLACESWEB CONTRACT

12 The guest arriving at the hotel, going through the central square, finds itself in a wood of steel trees with a green glass cover, supported by a steel plate with wrought leaves. The hotel entrance, with big green walls, reiterates the idea of two great forests; the central line of the hall, with its principal pillars, reminds of trunks, while the back wall (a lavish space of 80metres of length) has a three-layer glass cladding background stage, with a three-dimensional screen printing. Nature has no straight lines, so we proposed this kind of language not only in the claddings, but also in fa-

brics, wood and in carpets, in order to conceal the only material which the owner wanted to maintain: the marble floor. The colours of earth, brown, beige, grey, play with the two neutral colours: black and white. White is the background, the hotel’s common denominator, present in every ceiling, in the pillars of the hall, in the illuminated counters and in the base of three fireplaces hanging from the ceiling; black is the connection between ground floor and basement floor: a continuous line which enters and exits from the vertical walls of ‘luxury’ areas, giving a feeling of people-

Yachting Office Retail Architecture Hospitality Outdoor Luxury

The central vestibule of the main hall is now visually and physically united: connected from one corner to the other for more than 80 metres of length. The mink finishings and the soundproof panels, which host a warm and fair light, give a sense of atemporal calmness and elegance. In the guestrooms we wanted to develop a timeless

aesthetic, using warm colours – beige and brown – with discreet touches of colours, adapting the project to Novotel’s requests: light maintenance materials, like the floating floors and the walls in vinyl wallpaper. The warm lighting contributed to the creation of an elegant location, distant from the current trends. The bathrooms, with elegant and warm-coloured

claddings, have been completely renovated and provided with spacious showers. In the hallway we put great attention in the choice of new doors, as they had to respect the ambitious requisites of Novotel. Thanks to the contrast between the dark shades of the wood and the light shades of the beige doors, of vertical panels (the only original cladding) and of the carpet, we obtained a relaxing and harmonious atmosphere.

PW PLACESWEB CONTRACT

14

PROJECTS / INTERVIEW HOW DID YOU RESOLVE THE ILLUMINATION? The illumino-technic project was realized with respect to the norms dictated by Accor. We employed a LED illumination system in order to guarantee energy saving, long lasting lamps and less costs of maintenance. On the main floor we made sure to provide the best illumination in order to make the hall stand out. We used a high-impact lighting system called ‘Via Lattea’, the result of a collaboration of experts: a 32m long structure indirectly illuminates the hall. At both ends of the lobby we de-

cided to create a sort of indirect illumination by modeling on the ceiling a series of craters of different circumferences, helping to transmit the warmth and the feeling of a peaceful rest. In general, the other areas follow the same language given by the lighting, which determines the spaces and makes them proportionate. At the lower level, in the areas destined to halls, this balance of proportions is much more evident in the use of soundproof panels of different formats, installed in the ceilings.

Blue Planet Aquarium con Atena SpA KASTRUP, DANMARK www.3xn.com

The Blue Planet, located on Amager Island, near the airport of Copenhagen, was inaugurated in 2013. It is the largest and modern aquarium in Northern Europe; its spiral design recalls a huge vortex which wants to suggest what it hosts. The façade is cladded with diamond-shaped tiny aluminium sheets, fitting the organic form of the building. Like water, aluminium reflects colours and light, therefore the look of the building changes depending on the

weather and the times of the day. The Blue Planet was designed by the Danish studio 3XN and its concept drew inspiration from nature, in order to give a feeling of adventure and to house fishes in their natural habitat. The round foyer is the central point of the aquarium; here visitors can choose what to explore: rivers, lakes or seas. Starting multiple itineraries, the risk of staying in queue before visiting the single aquariums is reduced to a minimum. Each exhibit has its theme and its entrance from the foyer, where

The aquarium contains 7.000.000 liters of water and celebrates the aquatic biodiversity, housing 20.000 fishes and aquatic animals of 450 different species – 150 more than the elder aquarium. With a surface of 9.000 square metres and technical systems working all day long, the Blue Planet is a modern sustainable building. “From the beginning, the Master Plan of this property was conceived in various phases of development: hotel, bungalows, villas and winery. It’s difficult to achieve this organic process when embarking on nature and environmental projects. In any complex project, resolving unknown issues can lead to even superior results.” State the designers, who explain: “The true challenge was to preserve the untouched soil in its natural state, without intervening in the picturesque scenery. The first task: not to disturb the magnificent environment, while also constructing a more accessibly friendly location. In order to correctly make each detailed decision about the site, it was important to take into consideration the topography of the location. Countless seasonally dry streams flowed down the mountain and were included in the Master Plan. The most notable streams were chosen as the anchor point for development, and to support it, a series of lagoons were construc-

ted near the building. In the absence of any notable scale natural element as a support or anchor of future construction, it was decided to create a tectonic shift mode, a massive and random slab that would grasp the hotel. In contrast to this great stone slab, the building is made up of lightweight and minimalist materials. In an effort to construct the ground, the building was made up of elements such as ramps, a "floating" pool, and forestry and trails as arms that were rooted to the environment. Each facade fully looks to a cardinal point. This position led to four completely distinguishable sides. The windows that were glazed treated towards Valle de Uco coincide with the southern orientation. The facade looking onto the mountains, which face west, were protected with battery parasols, electro-hydraulic and automated movement, which allow to gradually sift this orientation. The north undergoes hard sunlight, the facade is closed, opening only strictly necessary openings. Since it is situated in an earthquake zone, the whole building is articulated in different structural parts, isolated from each other, which coincide in each case with particular internal functions. The areas surrounding the hotel, which stand at the original level, emphasizes the aridity of the site. A bed of rocks overlooks the whole lagoon, nearly 400 meters long, standing at the building to show the strong contrast of the land. The living-dining room, Cava, playroom and Spa are located within the construction area. There social activities unfold sarin a single multipurpose, multilevel space. The adjoining body of the building is riserve for the rooms. Both zones are separated by a triple height ceiling, which connects both buildings and officiates as the primary seismic fuse. M. Z.

is an architectural studio which provides services of building, urban and interior design, both for new and old structures. The studio works in several sectors: offices, hotels, airports, factories, education, commerce, communication, shopping centres, residential and leisure projects. The projects go from offices or shops’ interior design to urban development’s masterplans. The studio has been chosen in order to carry out important development projects in Argentina and Uruguay, but also in the United States. Among the projects in development there are some buildings, a residential building in Olivos’ harbour, an office building and a multipurpose building. The studio has the right structure and skills to develop even very important projects. The team work encourages the integration of experts in technical disciplines, the economic and strategic planning for the development and the design of any project; it coordinates the work of a team of structural engineers and consultants. The cost control and the timeliness are essential for the planning: for this reason the studio has developed a system of monitoring and supervision of the project underway which allows to respect deadlines and the arranged estimate.

Tapas Euphoria restaurant is located in one of Majorca’s most famous tourist locations: Cala Ratjada, a town on the eastern top of the island, about 80km from Palma. Its characteristic climate and its beautiful shores render this place a popular destination. “What the sea trails on shore, stays on shore”, this old saying is the starting point of the project. Oxidized steel, whitened wood, glass and rattan are the rubbles sedimented on the foreshore, reinterpreted and turned into architectural elements, with the purpose of communicating the restaurant’s look and per-

ception as a modern and avant-garde location, without losing the place’s essence: a project which wants to be a link between innovation and tradition. The restaurant is located on the seashore, in front of the harbor. It is mainly dedicated to foreign tourism, above all German, with particular needs: “the project considers the transformation of the former tapas restaurant in a contemporary one”, states Ramón Esteve, the architect. Its architecture is made up of two traditional buildings linked to the rear courtyards, both covered by a shingle roof, one of which develops on two levels, and the other on road level.

PROJECTS / HOSPITALITY RESTAURANT The designer wanted to give the restaurant a Mediterranean look, for this purpose he mainly employed light-coloured materials which enhance the brightness: whitened wood for the café’s counter, for walls and ceilings, and light-grey floorings. The oxidized shades of steel parts have been sparingly used, in order to enrich the counter and the portico with details. The aqua marina shades of the rattan and the glass of the lamps give a touch of elegance and innovation. Bearing in mind the kind of cuisine and the spatial limitations, the project prioritized the café and the veranda areas, towards other like the courtyards and the first floor. “The main façade becomes an opening towards the sea, with its big sheet of glass and the wooden roofs, which filter the daylight and illuminate the portico”, explains the designer. The main entrance allows visitors to see the restaurant and the elements that characterize this space: the café, the stairway and the double height. The counter extends itself longways and connects the spaces, working as a window of the gastronomic offer.

The height of the place is superior than the boardwalk, in order to enjoy the marine landscape. The ceiling is covered by wooden slabs of various dimensions, which create an original pattern. This motif hides the illumination, the acoustic panels, and allow the hanging of lamps made of translucent aqua marine glass; the same motif is proposed in some vertical panels. The rattan elements are a reinterpretation of traditional furniture in plant fibers, typical of Majorca’s area. The furniture, the café and the lamps were designed by Ramón Esteve Studio exclusively for this location, with the aim of enhancing the bond with nature. In fact, the natural elements are perfectly combined with wood, which delimits the partiallycovered patio. C.. A.

The designer explained how he created this open space facing the park and the city, whose shapes remind of a seed’s structure: “seeds have a coat covering and protecting them. They have life inside, as they transform and become plants. This seed, today, has become a wooden building near the city park. Its round shape arises in front of other glass towers and its soft curves stand out among orthogonal and sleek lines of surrounding buildings. You im-

mediately understand that it is neither a flat nor an office building. It sticks out for its resemblance to a monument: a symbol among nature and people”. The architect designed also the stair which connects the auditorium on the ground floor to the “Art’s boardwalk”, a versatile exhibition space destined to temporary exhibitions which can be used even for other activities. UniCredit Pavilion’s project arises from the will to build a great-impact structure inside a strategic city area, “thought to be of help for the people and for the city”, points out Ada Lucia De Cesaris, former deputy mayor and Planning Assessor. Pandemos Agora LUSSEMBURGO

Pandemos Agorà is a small boutique shop in Luxembourg mostly for Greek cosmetic and deli products. WWW.KLABARCHITECTS.COM

AGORA The store was designed by the architecture Klab, who had to operate in an area of just 40 square meters, trying to combine the different dimensions of the product, giving a feeling of a museum. Most of the products have an exceptionally designed packaging, one of the main reasons why they were chosen by the owner. The owner’s request of a 'Greek atmosphere' within the shop played an important role in the design process which does not employ cliché forms and images from the archaic

times which for decades have been synonyms of “Greece” and mostly used in Greek restaurants all around the world. Klab studio was inspired by the Cycladic islands’ architecture. The shop is long and narrow with a small façade facing the street. The new furniture and the curvy walls produce an effect of different dimensions and depth. The whiteness, the smooth curves in combination with a degraded blue ceiling provide a sense of purity and simplicity in rather complex shapes. The 'Greek atmosphere' is redefined in an abstract interpretation of the intense Cycladic light and of the vernacular local architecture. Klab use of light determines the space. Products are illuminated from the back through sand-frosted Perspex. Lighting comes from the perforation of the ceiling and led lighting is implemented at the edges of the furniture giving the illusion of a detached flying wall M. B.

Ample open areas and brightly lit interiors define Numarine's traditional and characteristic layout. Flybridge 60 – conceived to have the highest volume in the 60' category – is drawn by Numarine's designer Can Yalman, responsible for the concept, lines and interiors. Umberto Tagliavini is the naval architect and Gurit is in charge of the structural engineering. The 60 Flybridge 60 is very competitive thanks to Numarine's construction techniques where light weight and strength are guaranteed by vacuum infusion composite construction.

With a 35 knots top speed and a 28 knots cruising speed, the use of less powerful engines will keep fuel consumption and maintenance costs down and give the Numarine 60 Flybridge a very competitive price. Comfort and cheer were the guidelines in designing the Numarine Flybridge 60's internal layout. The three guest cabins all have their own toilet, while close attention was paid to the full beam owner's suite, with huge windows at water level for a breathtaking view. Omer Malaz, Numarine Owner and CEO adds that “with the Numarine 60 Flybridge we are using an IPS motorization/transmissions. Using IPS is very important in space saving, it allows accommodation space to free up! Their smaller size frees up considerable space in the engine room, which in turn allows us to increase fuel tank capacity, notably increasing the cruising range. Now she can be considered a real ‘Long Range Cruiser’”. This new model will incisively place Numarine into the 60' to 70' market. J. A..
