SOMMARIO CONTENTS SUMARIO When people talk about the contract sector they mean only turnkey great projects deserving this kind of reputation. PLACESWEB considers as contract all those situations in which are offered custom-tailored furniture and products fitting the client’s needs. Contract is a big sector where many professionals work, and yachting is an important part of it, as it includes industrial production, craftsmanship, technical and artistic skills. This sector is of great value and appreciated worldwide, it has turned simple ships into real “dwellings” with a clear aesthetic sense, comfort and the customer’s lifestyle. These projects stand out for their beauty, luxury and accurate manufacturing. We consider them pertaining to contract, even though not standard, but correspondent to the client’s needs, for their complexity and for the opportunities they offer to architects and designers who want to follow their ideas, as shown by the partial collection in this issue of realisations. T

he designers of the shipyard Sanlorenzo have been creating tailored yachts since1958, and have shown the new concept of the 27 meter luxury Motoryacht, conceived as a luxury loft. This new boat is being built in Liguria, in the city of Ameglia, by Sanlorenzo. The interiors are by Pietro Lissoni: this is his third work in the nautical field after Ghost, 37 meter sailboat built by Vitters and Tribù, dutch shipyard, and the 50 meter Explorer Vessel, manufactured by Mondomarine for the industrialist Luciano Benetton. The motoryacht, whose identification initials are SX88, will be ready at the end of August and will be debuting for the first time at the 40th edition of the Cannes Yachting Festival. A lot of customers have already stepped up for it, but why? Of course, because this luxury yacht completely refashions the boat concept. The SX88 aims at representing a very innovative alternative: bringing design (and its big international names) in the nautical sector. Its interior design is by Piero Lissoni, together with David Lopez, Stefano Castelli and Marco Gottardi. The exteriors have been developed in collaboration with Officina Italiana Design, Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta, who poured even more elegance to the her exterior design: Hull water lines were developed by the worlwide renown Lou Codega, undisputed American master in high performing oceangoing fisherman.

During the years Sanlorenzo has developed a precise and consistent model introducing the concept of architecture and design, thanks to the insight of the chairman Massimo Perotti and the collaboration with Dordoni Architetti at first, and then with Antonio Citterio and Patricia Viel for the projects relating to the interiors of the yachts. Sanlorenzo aims at thinking outside the box, and therefore refashioned design in this very traditionalist field: the contribution of these designers enabled, for the first time, the introduction of languages and codes coming from different realities, a concept of luxury “home living”, interpreted every time according to every manufacturer’s personal experience and style. This choice, and the stylistic and designing affinity between the designer and the company lay the foundation for the collaboration between the firm and Piero Lissoni, as stated by Massimo Perotti, Chairman of Sanlorenzo:

8

“The timeless elegance of the Sanlorenzo yachts and, moreover, their simplicity, found their ideal interpreter, Piero Lissoni.” The project of the yacht SX88 is cutting edge, achieved thanks to a strong understanding and an incisive and a constant dialogue between Piero Lissoni and the Sanlorenzo shipyard, which completely refashions the traditional ideals of this field. The big open spaces and the huge glass walls connecting the inner space with the outer panorama are stunning and very appreciated by the ship-owners. Piero Lissoni re-interpreted the concept of space inside the boat, which is developed as it were an open space, a unique and continuous room from bow to stern, featuring open kitchen, dining and living room (and the cabins at the lower level). It gives the feeling of being in an exclusive mansion overlooking the sea: such a welcoming and spectacular atmosphere that you will forget being on a boat.

PROJECTS / INTERVIEW

What did you inspire for the concept of this yacht’s interior design? The so called inspiration comes from non-floating buildings. Therefore, I applied the same idea that I use when designing for standing buildings, translating it in a floating apartment… I like spaces that are as open as possible: if I should design an antique building, I would certainly maintain its characteristics, but if I have to design a new “building” I will design it as an open space, as it is called in the US. I like the idea of open spaces, of spaces that are as open as possible. Moreover, the project for Sanlorenzo comes from an idea, from an interaction between a very strong aesthetic code and the will of designing a new boat, or “floating building,” which I fully respected, only changing some functional elements. First of all, you have to take into consideration the structural elements, you cannot carry out radical changes, that can cause damage to the building’s structure and staticity. Therefore, we began by understanding the building’s limits, and then we started working on it. I introduced a very simple concept: since I like open spaces, that was the beginning.

I would like to cast a spotlight on a very changeable element: elegance, that is, at the end of the day, a combination of possible errors. What is beautiful in it, is that you run risks in trying to be elegant: sometimes you succeed, sometimes you

Elegance and innovation. How would you define elegance?

10

end up being vulgar; so what is beautiful in elegance is running the risk of succeeding. The risk is higher when dealing with architecture: there is a special language and there is an idea within the risk. What we do is combining together simplicity and a little bit of elegance, or better, as much as we can.

Choosing open space could lead to a nautical revolution?

Sometimes, inspiring a new project could be pleasant. I’m not arrogant, and I cannot be sure that this project will inspire some new works, but I hope so. According to me, designing big and small boats like they were caravans is very strange and mysterious; with such narrow spaces, too many functions,

too many additional beds and a lot of microscopic spaces, it seems that you have to make the most of all these areas, without air to breathe. With Sanlorenzo I boldly tried to design a completely open space boat, going beyond conventions, and they listened to me!

PROJECTS / INTERVIEW How did you choose furniture? As I always do. I furnished the space with the minimum required and with some objects designed by me, using industrial largescale production and including only two or three custom-made pieces, when I had to. What I want to highlight, is that I only use industrially produced furniture manufactured by the best Italian design brands, like Vitra, Oluce, Cassina, Kartell, for sofas and chairs, Boffi for kitchens and industrially produced lamps.

Architecture Hospitality Outdoor Luxury Yachting Wordplaces Retail

P W PLACESWEB CONTRACT

11

I try to mix different worlds because I really love contamination: in this case, I chose to furnish the interior with some pieces designed in Scandinavia, some modern furniture, some antique oriental objects, mixed with contemporary design products, combined with something different: Berber carpets, maybe next to a high-contemporary made in Italy piece. The whole “assembly” which I take care of, is my concept of elegance. I assemble things, sometimes running the risk of committing errors. But that's the beauty of elegance!!

PIERO LISSONI LISSONI ASSOCIATI MILANO Architect and designer, Piero Lissoni (1956) graduated in architecture from Politecnico di Milano: in 1986 he set up Lissoni Associati (together with Nicoletta Canesi) and ten years later he founded Graph.X. More than 70 professionals work in this fullservice design activity, ranging from interior to coordinated image, from showrooms to boats, from furnishing accessories to signs, reaching fashion and cosmetics. Alessi, Benetton, Boffi, Cassina, Knoll International, Poltrona Frau, Porro, Tecno, Wella: these are only some of the big amount of the prestigious customers of the Lissoni Atelier, which designed for them numerous showrooms, both in Italy (Milan, Venice) and abroad (France, US, Turkey, Japan). Common feature: the elegant design, the “cohabitation of different styles” (Klein) and the brand identity. Particularly important to mention, he designed the office buildings for Living Divani and, in Milan, he worked for La Rinascente, Glas Italia and Matteograssi. In the last decade, he was commissioned for many private apartments (in Milan, Monza, Forte dei Marmi) and luxury hotels, like the Monaco & Grand Canal Hotel in Venice, the renewal of a historical palace of the 17th century; the interiors of the Bentley Design Hotel in Istanbul; the Mitsui Garden, business hotel in Tokyo; the three suites at Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai in India.

ARCADIA A85S

P W PLACESWEB CONTRACT

Having revolutionised the international nautical market since 2010 with a string of yachts designed to deliberately blur the confines between interior and exterior, the Arcadia Yachts yard looks set to astonish the sector once again with the new A85S, a boat that delivers an incredibly generous amount of guest space for its 26-metre length. The layout and functional aspects of the living space aboard the A85S are the result of a deliberate evolution of the yard’s construction processes. The linear design of the superstructure and vertical line of the bow guarantee optimal use is made of every single inch of available space, both interior and exterior.

14

The perfect case in point is the exceptionally generous living area which is significantly larger than that found on other yachts of the same dimension and, in fact, results in around 100 square metres of communal space on the main deck alone. The uniqueness of the Arcadia Yachts philosophy in general and the A85S in particular springs from a desire to place people at the centre of each new project. This changes the whole meaning and experience of seafaring which becomes much more than just an opportunity to luxuriate in the gentle rocking of the waves and the warmth of the sun. Instead it allows all aboard to enjoy exceptionally close contact with the surrounding environment. M. Z.

DIRECT CONTACT BETWEEN MAN AND NATURE All Arcadia Yachts are inspired by our desire to put the owner at centre stage, to create spaces that will cocoon him and his guests whilst still allowing all aboard to fully experience and live the natural land and seascape all around. This is exactly why the A85S features the innovative sky-lounge concept which can convert to a third entirely enclosed deck, complete with Up & Down side windows that rise all the way up to the hard top at the touch of a button. This makes the whole of the upper deck much more flexible and usable in all kinds of weather. The space can be climate-controlled in very hot climes or in foul weather or left open to the air to allow occupants enjoy the wonderful scent of the cool sea breeze in summer. A significant departure from the usual offerings on the market as this particular space really can be utilised 365 days a year.

DESIGN E LAYOUT In design terms, the A85S is simple and sober in style, featuring a harmonious mix of interior and exterior areas with the confines between the latter blurred to the point of barely existing. The enclosed spaces, in fact, seem to meld with the surround nature and sea. The sky lounge is home not simply to the high-tech bridge but also a large convivial area which, as already indicated, can be enjoyed right throughout the year by owner and guests. Arcadia has also created a large C-shaped sofa and an adjustable-height table forward on the main deck which transforms this particular space into a large sunning area. The deckhouse is almost entirely comprised of double-glazed reflective glass, lending the interior a bright airiness. Automatic blinds on the ceiling and side windows offer the owner and his guests complete privacy in port or even riding at anchor out in a bay. The A85S’s main saloon is extremely cosy and also has an eight-seater dining table forward which can be served directly from the galley, thanks to a vertically sliding hatch. The elegant winter garden leads to the spacious aft-deck lounge which is 8.5 metres in length and has a nicely-sheltered cockpit with a second table that’s perfect for suppers and dinners as well as a large sunning area further aft. The exterior aft deck is itself well-sheltered and offers guests an excellent alternative to the interior. In fact, it is somewhere they can spend much of their time. The imposing size of the aft deck allows both owner and guests to enjoy the sea as fully as possible and to feel surrounded by it, thanks to the presence of two side balconies that further enhance the sense of communion with the world around them. The A85S has four cabins on the lower deck, including a spectacular 32 square metre master suite amidships with an en suite bathroom complete with a spacious wellness area. The roomy VIP stateroom forward has a double bed and also a walk-in closet. The remaining two guest cabins are twins. Additionally, there are quarters for four crew in the forward section of the A85S. Furnishings from the leading Italian designer brands have been used through the A85S’s interior with plentiful individual stand-alone pieces that make a modular layout workable.

NPL HULL AND PERFORMANCE One of the A85S’s strongest attributes is its exceptionally modest fuel consumption, which is an impressive 30-50% lower than other yachts of comparable dimensions. The same applies to its running costs. These results were delivered by its semi-planing NPL hull. The latter was developed after extensive testing by the National Physical Laboratory in England to ascertain the optimal hull form and also the most hydrodynamically efficient length-beam ratio. Combined with the particularly light ARCADIA superstructure, this advanced hull delivers strikingly efficient performance figures even with modest horse power.

PROJECTS / YACHTING AUXILIARY POWER FROM SOLAR PANELS

Architecture Hospitality Outdoor Luxury Yachting Wordplaces Retail

P W PLACESWEB CONTRACT

ARCADIA’s philosophy not only celebrates but also respects the natural environment. This ethos is expressed in practical form by the solar panels integrated into the superstructure. These actually reduce generator use so that guests can luxuriate in the sounds of nature – waves lapping, birds calling - while riding at anchor. Extensive use of leading-edge thermal-insulating glazing is further evidence of the yard’s commitment to its green principles too. New generation photovoltaic cells are set between the outer and inner surfaces of the double-glazed solar panels fitted to most of the superstructure. This advanced, eco-friendly system of 36 sqm of panels, each comprising hundreds of photovoltaic cells, yields a power output of 3.5 kW. This is enough energy to to power many different electrical appliances and units, including fridges, water pumps, WCs, lights, A/V and electronics while the batteries recharge. Given the fact that air-conditioning is often superfluous because of the large apertures in the winter garden and the way the sky lounge can be opened up, the A85S’s energy requirements are often met for the entire day by the solar panel system alone rather the generators. The result is a significant saving in diesel, slashed pollutant levels and zero emissions.

PROJECTS / YACHTING A STYLISH PRESENCE AT CANNES YACHTING FESTIVAL The A85S will be in good company on the water at the upcoming 2017 Cannes Yachting Festival (September 12 to 17). In fact, the Italian yard will be bringing its entire fleet from the Sherpa to the A115 flagship, via the A85 and the A100, to the event.

BUILDER STATEMENT The Tankoa Vertige S501 is built entirely in aluminum light alloy 5083. Construction has been carefully followed by the project manager and builder engineer Albert McIlroy, the owner’s representative. Albert has been responsible for supervising construction of a number of yachts worldwide and mainly in Northern Europe. McIlroy recently declared - “With S501, Tankoa Yachts has greatly improved their time schedule management and operation processes and they truly have a teutonic approach that often leaves me speechless for an Italian builder. I can say, after having supervised the construction of many yachts worldwide, not only the work pace and productivity at Tankoa are superior but it is also probably the first time I see the production schedule fully respected without altering the incredible flexibility that Tankoa is becoming known for.” The above mention factor is truly a plus as the Tankoa Tachts organization and business plan, calling for onlythe-best subcontractors and suppliers, comes within a package offering typical Italian styling.

ABOUT TANKOA YACHTS TANKOA Yachts is a project born late in 2008, thanks to a very competent team of managers and investors already involved in the yachting industry, and with a long professional history of successes. Since its inception, TANKOA Yachts' business plan is based on a new philosophy of yacht construction. “Boutique Shipyard” are the most accurate words to describe TANKOA's philosophy, a top quality shipyard focused on yachts ranging mainly from 50 to 90 meters. Limited production, attention to details, use of the latest technologies, precision, rich specifications, ethics and emphasis on Italian building excellence are just a few of TANKOA's values. TANKOA Yachts has opted for “a multi-cultural approach of yacht construction” by integrating various criteria. At TANKOA, the management team is proud to have successfully merged business ethics, high quality precision engineering, and Italian DNA in design and flexibility. Two experienced and well-known professionals were deeply involved from the first steps of this fascinating industrial history: world renowned and respected designer Francesco Paszkowski, and naval architect Professor Vincenzo Ruggiero. They are working together on the first two yachts of 70 meters, following TANKOA's philosophy guidelines in yacht construction, based on total custom production where quality, exclusivity, precision and reliability are the main focuses.

TWIGGY

DESIGNER

DESIGNER

New products also contribute to the successful development and were presented at the Orgatec and just recently at the Salone Ufficio in Milan. Four of the Sedus innovations (the se:do swivel chair, the se:line conference chair, the se:works lounge furniture system, the see:wall partition and acoustics system) have already received a total of eight top-class design awards. The Klöber Klimastuhl offering the world’s first individual temperature regulation is becoming increasingly popular.

Rugs, mats and upholstery fabrics for functional and informal exteriors Twiggy is a new, fully recyclable material, which is waterproof and easy to maintain, thus ideally suited also to contract project. The simple appearance of Twiggy has aesthetic qualities that emerge once it is loomed or hand woven: the random position, which the yarns take during production, lead to unexpected mélange effects, thus giving the mats Ida and Jali the ability to disclose their full personality.

Poise, sobriety and timelessness are the qualities that best describe JIAN. The collection designed by the Neri&Hu Studio for gandia Blasco, has been expanded with two new timeless design pieces that combine aesthetics and functionality: the Hooded sofa with its clean geometric silhouette canopy and the Jian terrace recliner.

A sober collection that combines the essentiality of teak with the warmth and softness of paddings and with the elegance of stone surfaces. Cleo's range includes sofas, lounge armchairs, tables, lamps and sun beds, as well as a rocking armchair which, thanks to its uniqueness and lightness, represents the whole collection at its best.

An ode to nature and its elements tell of a 'live' marble, warm and full of energy It is in fact a scenario dominated by the various natural elements that will be the next edition of Marmomacc for Franchiumberto. In this stand fitting the marble will play a new role: thanks to the presence of various seats, tables and dividing elements that mark the dynamic of space, the visitor will understand how natural stone becomes an element of comfort, conviviality and sharing.

As with the previous two cruise ships, Vimar devices have been chosen for Viking Sky by Fincantieri. Controls with precise and silent mechanics allow you to measure the lighting at will, while taking different types - from the standard ones to those for razors positioned in the bathrooms, up to the USB ones - allow you to have access to electricity wherever you are. In particular, the USB sockets recessed into two modules.
