IMPACTING LIVES GLOBALLY EDITORIAL Team Corporate Communication & Quality Assurance Welcome to 2017. For a lot of us, a start of New Year is a time that marks the beginning of changes we plan to make in the days to come. This is going to be our best year yet. We have just welcomed 2017 with the news that our corporate identity i.e. the IPE Global logo, is now a registered trademark. A great start to New Year already! In the coming months, we aim to give wings to the rising aspirations in all the key strategic aspects of our work, the internal processes, governance arrangements, and knowledge management including the decisions we make and the outputs we deliver to impact lives, globally. 4

IPE Global

Whether we are making positive impacts in the communities through our projects or governing our company in a way that makes every IPEan proud, we care. We are excited to share our progress, not only in these communities but throughout our company. We present Planet IPE Yearbook, the first in its series, reflecting on 2016 and highlighting our accomplishments. This Yearbook is the voice of every IPEan and brings together our colleagues from across global locations as a big IPE Global family. We wholeheartedly acknowledge the contributions of our colleagues - from different business areas, technical disciplines and geographic locations, to develop the very first edition of Planet IPE Yearbook. To quote Hellen Keller, “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much”. Happy Reading!

MD SPEAKS Welcome to 2017

E

very New Year feels the same; every past year looks different. At the cusp of the New Year, standing between the reality of 2016 and the promise of 2017, is an opportunity to reflect and plan. At times, we are so overcome by the demands of ‘doing’ that reflection and planning seem to be luxuries for another day, another person. Yet, it is a fact that most successful people attribute their success to this daily discipline. IPE Global Limited (IPE Global) is proud of the fact that it has some of the best urban planners, economic planners and social planners in the world today. And together all of us are doing a great job of making development a ground reality. But here are two additional designations we all need to have - ‘LifePlanner’ and ‘Everyday-Planner’. We need to prioritise the larger goals of our life - including family, work and spirituality - and then plan each day, working towards these goals. As Jim Rohn said - ‘either your lead the day, or the day leads you.’ Ditto with life. Devote at least 15 mins a day to daily planning and review apart from annual and life plans. All these will make a marked difference in your productivity and your team’s success.

Ashwajit Singh Managing Director IPE GLOBAL

I can look back with pride and enumerate our accomplishments since the time of IPE Global’s existence. We have demystified sustainability into a discipline capable of delivering solutions, with a passion for heralding change through our work. Our projects in areas of Health, Nutrition & WASH, Urban & Infrastructure Development, IT & eGovernance, Education & Skills Development and Environment & Climate Change have transformed the lives of over 300 million people across the globe. We have implemented more than 800 projects in over 100 countries, addressing some of the most complex socio-economic issues. With inroads into new geographical terrains and landmark collaborations with clients- this has been a good year. I say good, because no matter what the situation we face as a business, the positivity, dedication and focus showcased by each one of us, is what makes this company special. We are fussy about who we employ and it shows! This for me, is the essence of what contributes to our achievements and IPE Global’s rise as a powerhouse of growth & ideas! Let us, together, as one big family, welcome 2017 and continue to work for an equitable and sustainable world. It is all of you, who I thank, for supporting this journey. Wish you a very Happy New Year! Planet IPE Yearbook Edition

016 was a busy year, a year which demanded that we must rethink globalisation, and yet a year where global political economy impacted international and local businesses alike. What it meant for IPE Global was to remain agile, adapt our corporate strategy, and ascertain our direction matching the winds of change.

As we enter 2017, there will be new challenges testing our commitment to development agenda like never before, which will require joint and collaborative efforts cutting across offices and business units. Horizon is changing, our sails must be up as the waters rustles under our bows.

We worked towards strengthening our partnerships with multilateral and bilateral development agencies, governments, corporates, philanthropic, civil society and not-for-profit organisations, to firmly anchor the development agenda in tackling complex, socio-economic issues. W

ith the closing of the year 2016, I look back upon my journey of the last nine years in IPE Global with pride. I started with a staff strength of around 50 which has now grown to more than 800 persons, with a turnover growth of about fourteen times the original. We now have a strong global presence through our subsidiaries and branches in overseas geographies. It feels great to be a part of this exceptional growth story. Our endeavour is to ensure financial discipline, statutory compliances, risk and contract management, timely and quality information to relevant users to support business and decision making both at Management and Board level.

eam IPE Global remained focused on delivering projects befitting our culture of offering the best value for money to our clients. The New Year 2017 will bring its own set of successes and challenges but our course is clear. We need to focus intently on delivering our best and providing the most comprehensive solutions in the industry and re-affirming the brand of IPE Global as a powerhouse of growth. It’s important for us to use our time astutely and move forward as decisively as we can. That will only be possible with your continued hard work. While we’ve successfully separated our sectors & practice areas operationally, we need to continue to work as a team in order to create efficacious bids for global projects. Thus, it is my request to all IPEans to evaluate not only what is best for our specific departments, but also the potential impact on other parts and on the group company as a whole. The year ahead will bring it’s own challenges but I am sure we can realise our ambitions. My priority remains to conquer a challenge that calls forth the best in our team and brings them together around a shared sense of purpose, to not only deliver our growth projections but also make the workplace one of the best in the industry.

In the coming years, we expect IPE Global to continue to achieve greater heights. We as support function, besides our existing responsibilities would be focusing on reliable and robust management information system with strong internal controls. We feel that the quality management information system is key to monitor and evaluate the progress of the business units and take corrective action on real time basis. I take this opportunity to thank all my team members and hope they continue to work with similar dedication and hard work; and help implement the best financial strategy in a way that will allow IPE Global to achieve continued sustainable growth in coming years.

he hallmark of IPE Global projects during 2016 continued to be innovation, excellence and learning - ably aided by knowledge

management. Each of our employees are mines of information with tonnes of experience - yet always asking the question - ‘How can we do this better?’

In the coming year, we hope to up the ante on action research, policy papers and implicit knowledge management making IPE Global’s experience and learning over the last 18 years available to a larger audience. I am sure IPE Global will continue its leadership role in knowledgeably translating the vision of development to reality on the ground!

n the last few years we have been competing with the consulting giants and have been successful in not only giving them a fight, but also winning over them. This sums up where IPE Global stands today. The best thing about our organisation is that we never give up, we learn from our experiences and keep moving forward to achieve the heights of success. The last 3 years for me has been an incredible journey, and I am looking forward to contribute in all possible ways to IPE Global’s success in the years to come.

016 was a year of consolidation for IPE Global’s UK operations. Integrating IPE Triple Line into the wider Group was a key priority and imperative to enhancing our client offering. As an organisation we are committed to delivering the best possible service and optimum value to our clients. In 2016, we worked tirelessly across four continents on 61 projects in 31 countries – always with one goal in mind: delivering results where they matter most. During the past year we are delighted to have added development partners such as EBRD, SDC, DANIDA and FORMIN to our client portfolio. With long-term clients such as the U.K. Department of International Development (DFID), we have continued to help eradicate poverty and meet the sustainable development goals with offerings spanning both advisory services and technical assistance.

IPE Global

As a people centric organisation, we constantly invest in enhancing our competencies. In 2016, this was especially true of our Urban Development & Infrastructure practice. Accordingly, IPE Global provides strategic thought leadership on urbanisation as well as investment into infrastructure service delivery. Likewise we continue to provide thought leadership with regard to the provision of Monitoring & Evaluation services as well as Grant & Fund Management. Our accomplishments in 2016 are a tribute to the commitment and professionalism of our people. It is their dedication, excellence and passion that underpin current and future success, and so we remain committed to being a distinctive home for them to build their careers and to work on creating conditions that stimulate equitable and sustainable economic growth in developing countries.

ross learning is the key for advancing women empowerment and going forward we will continue to put our focus on gender parity. Partner organisations need to be clear on service provision and that it has been a long journey but women are now taking up leadership roles- for example the head of BBC is a woman- for the first time in history. The market place is a very important space for sharing ideas for both for men and women, and having innovation cells is also a good idea in this respect. Technology adaption is crucial so that women are able to add value to their produce such as milk. Governments are generally responsible and responsive about policies, but implementation is often the challenge and this is where intervention needs to happen. Blurring the division of labor between men and women is thus crucial in both the private and public realms for empowerment to happen. The rise of women in academia and other fields should be celebrated and used to sensitise men too.

Lydia Richardson Director

C

ross cutting thematic learning adds to a healthier cooperation and knowledge building throughout the organization. There is also a lot of benefit to business networking as a valuable way to expand knowledge, attain learnings on successful initiatives, gain new clients and spread information about our own business. Networking also leads to increased visibility and help build our reputation as a reliable, knowledgeable solutions provider and subsequently more leads and referrals. Ultimately, an increased network with partners will result in them seeking our inputs in conferences, events, etc. and help position us as thought leaders and dependable consultants. IPE Global (Ethiopia Office)

he Ethiopia office began its journey in 2016 with a resolve to embark on new territories - developing new clientele and stepping into new domains. Mid way through the year we expanded the team from four to ten. With fresh efforts pouring in, we won our first DFID contract to work on health of adolescent girls; won repeat assignments from UN in education, social protection and nutrition; and have been

awarded the first assignment with the European Union on climate change. Some of these are pioneering work in Africa for IPE Global! This is just the beginning for the young team in Ethiopia – they have set high goals and have what it takes to get there. They have worked on improving their networks, partnerships and capacities to deliver better. And they have made me proud!

Programme Highlight

G

overnment of Ethiopia (GoE) is developing a new programme to support adolescent girls, aged 11-14 years old, to engage in a safe space programme that will equip these girls with personal, social, health, safety, education and financial outcomes - building their confidence, agency, skills and knowledge as they progress through adolescence. The Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) has been leading the development of the programme to date, together with support from Girl Effect Ethiopia, a programme team of the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) in Ethiopia. IPE Global (Lead Firm) along with Pathfinder International Ethiopia is implementing the pilot phase of the Ethiopia Safe Space Programme.

PE Africa was set up in 2011 with the objective of expanding IPE Global’s mission of helping underdeveloped and developing regions to grow into a stable socio-economic order. It constitutes a strong team of committed persons from Asia, Europe and Africa, who draw on successful models and approaches from India and other emerging countries from South East Asia to achieve its objective. The business strategy of the Africa operations is based on the premise that emerging countries like India offer cost-effective innovative approaches to ‘fast track’ development, which are preferred by local governments and international funding agencies, rather than traditional western approaches, which in some cases demand high technical skills and a huge capital investment. IPE Africa, by transferring knowledge and strategies from other IPE Global projects, has successfully implemented national level projects such as accreditation process of health care facilities in Kenya, design of solid and liquid 20

waste management in Somaliland, design of Ethiopia social accountability programme, budget analysis and expenditure tracking of national and county level sector programmes in Kenya and Lesotho, and many more projects. After five years of its operation, IPE Africa has established its strong presence in most of the least developed countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, including Ethiopia, DRC, Somalia, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Lesotho. We have earned trust and confidence of donors and partners in terms of its commitment to the values of integrity and excellence. Today, IPE Africa, with its growing portfolio of work, a highly skilled technical team and sound business strategy is on the verge of a self-sustainable organisation with its rising turnover. IPE Africa is working relentlessly to realise its vision to be the leading South Development Consulting agency in the SubSaharan Africa by 2025.

y work, my world centres on Africa and I am deeply proud of the work we are engaged with here. Our programmes are comprehensive and operate in complex environments with long term outcomes; and a positive impact on beneficiaries. In the coming year, we will aim to strengthen the IPE Africa brand and achieve results and hopefully the attribution claim.

genuinely love working @IPE Global. I have been working here since the past 12 years. I have experienced utmost joy, tears amidst many challenges. I have also experienced some very beautiful moments here that will stay forever etched in my memory. My actual journey started when I took the charge of urban department in 2012. We initially started with a core team of 3 people in Delhi, winning more than 60 projects. I am proud to say that now we have a core team of 50 approximately with more than 200+ projects in our kitty. I feel blessed with a young, very talented, sincere, hardworking and a dedicated team that personally motivates me to work with them. This is just the beginning….I am sure that we have many more milestones to achieve…and not too far in future.

he year 2016 marked the beginning of IPE CKD’s journey towards creating a niche for itself in the area of research, knowledge management and documentation. Despite being on a tenderfoot, we did achieve some remarkable milestones for it to stand in good stead in the coming days. Our recently launched website www.ipeckd.com has features that allows it to become a single knowledge source on a plethora of development issues. IPE Scholar allows stakeholders to access information under one umbrella and encourages contributions on a wide range of development topics. The site also hosts exclusive knowledge pieces, project notes and communication materials which are useful in circulating our work to a wide range of stakeholders, documented by our team. We also collaborated on research reports for clients such as PHD Chambers and Confederation of Indian Industry. Our successfully launched “Thinking 26

IPE Global

Allowed” Initiative with its three main series of Kurukshetra, Ekalavya and Bioscope- also brought out some interesting opinions on new development schemes in India and climate change. Currently we are working on two projects – “Documentation of C4D interventions for Routine Immunisation” for UNICEF in partnership with our Health team and “The Knowledge Portal of Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE)” for DFID in partnership with our IT and eGovernance team. The first project seeks to document Social and Behavior Change Communication interventions across 13 states of the country, while the latter focuses on creating a well-informed knowledge portal including a market place for the MNRE. It’s just a beginning for IPE CKD! In 2017, we are ambitious and hopeful to successfully complete our current assignments, get involved in new projects and establish expertise in the field of research, communication and knowledge management!

he Thinking Allowed initiative by IPE CKD hopes to encourage knowledge sharing within the organisation by means of expert lectures, round table and panel discussions, etc., on developmental issues relevant to the current policy environment. It will help all of us think beyond and will push us into a space of collaborative thinking and collective learning.

A

n emerging ideology in the social development sector is that the ‘poor’, must rise to the challenge of working for their own upliftment. An example of this was encountered on our visit to Odisha where the DFID funded WASH Programme had been implemented from 2015 onwards. This experience in Odisha brought about the realisation that brick & mortar and providing facilities, is not enough to bring about change in habits. The requisite change begins from within, from understanding the problem and willingness to accept the solution. As we embark on the journey towards development, it is imperative to focus on all kinds of change agents; including you and me.

here is an increasing recognition for investing in health systems for ensuring Universal Health Coverage, with an overarching strategy for achieving sustainable development goals in health. The returns on investing in health are impressive as reductions in mortality accounts for nearly 11 percent economic growth in low and middle income countries. Most of these investments are going to come from domestic sources although some amount of external assistance is still needed. In the year 2016, we have maintained our solid credentials in providing techno-managerial support to health systems, for scale up in RMNCH+A, private sector partnerships and addressing determinants of health such as nutrition and WASH through convergence. Going forward, we are well placed to build strong partnerships with a diversified set of stakeholders to achieve dramatic health gains while also addressing inequity in health. 36

Project Highlight: 6+ projects won with various clients including UNICEF, Government of Bangladesh, UNFPA, DFID and Mott Macdonald Limited. One of our new assignments includes implementation of Active Case Detection (ACD) Strategy for Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) and PKDL under the KalaCore Programme for tackling VL. Kala-azar (VL) is endemic in 54 districts scattered across four states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Eastern Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, India. The project’s objective is to implement Active Case Detection based on house-to-house search for suspected cases. The project will improve access for case diagnosis by organising a diagnostic camp close by. It is expected that this will promote early diagnosis and prompt referral for treatment at nearby health facility. This approach would help in cutting down transmission rate for VL. The ACD activity is currently concentrated in Muzaffarpur and Gopalganj districts in Bihar and Godda in Jharkhand, India.

million pregnant women will benefit through high impact interventions

There has been an increasing engagement with the Government of India and state governments to support development and implementation of policies and guidelines as well as to share project learnings and findings from nationwide supportive supervision to inform decision making.

We have carved out niche areas for support aiming to create a sustainable change. The project team has rolled out a comprehensive strategy to improve quality of care for mothers and newborns at high case-load health facilities in the project areas and also developed implementation models to improve access of services in hilly areas, urban slums and rural areas. As we enter 2017, we plan to consolidate, adapt, demonstrate, partner, and scale up interventions to newer geographies to accelerate reduction of preventable maternal and newborn deaths.

ndia’s “Universal Healthcare” goal presents a huge challenge and an equally bigger opportunity to create sustainable solutions through partnerships by harnessing entrepreneurship of private players. The growing start up culture, coupled with rapid technology innovations and internet penetration can have a transformational impact in meeting universal healthcare goals by improving access and reducing cost of quality healthcare services . Increasingly private sector led Inclusive Business Models (IBMs) provide an untapped opportunity for addressing primary health care needs of urban poor in affordable and sustainable ways. This combined with philanthropy from Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Donors, etc., can help build sustainable community engagement models which promote patient centric care, better health seeking behaviour, demand side financing, risk sharing and viability gap, thus promoting integrated business models which have a larger social impact and are financially sustainable. 40

IPE Global

In this context, USAID has partnered with IPE Global to leverage financial and technical resources to bring in greater participation of the private sector and community support towards delivering public health goods. The programme seeks to support health service providers and innovative business models with strategic, financial and technical assistance to address challenges in building sustainable business models which can be scaled. The programme aims to improve access to affordable quality healthcare, including maternal, new born and child health, family planning and tuberculosis, and reduce out of pocket expenditure for the Urban Poor.

The project approach is creating, designing and implementing innovations for improving newborn, child and maternal health and then offering the innovation for scale-up by State and National Health Missions. The project team is presently working in the four states of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Bihar in India. Excellent results have been achieved by the project team this year with scale up of five community and facility based innovations countrywide- Home Based New Born Care Plus (HBNC+), Family Centred Care, Strengthening of Pediatrics Care Services, Special New Born Care Unit Plus (SNCU+) and Regional New Born Care Resource Centres. uring the last year, our Social and Economic Empowerment practice attained new heights. This was a very successful year with four new wins, each one bringing together innovation, implementation and influencing in varied developmental challenges. We have been able to strengthen our partnership with DFID India through three of four wins that focus on governance reforms, private sector engagement in development sector space and climate change. The final one is an interesting evaluation study for UNICEF on their Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction and Social Safety Programme for school children in Bihar. I sincerely thank my team members for their hard work and expect that together we will soar next year. One of the highlights of the year was winning the project for Infrastructure for Climate Resilient Growth in India (ICRG) in Bihar, Chhattisgarh & Odisha with DFID. The project involves climate proofing of assets built under Mahatma Gandhi 46

National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) in 103 blocks across the states of Bihar, Chhattisgarh & Odisha. Strengthening administrative and technical capacity of state institutions, geo-tagging of assets for better planning and durability of rural works with Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India. The programme also aims to improve resilience of rural communities to climatic vulnerabilities.

016 has been a year of many firsts for the Social & Economic Empowerment team and I have been privileged to be a part of at least two of them. For the first time through the Infrastructure for Climate Resilient Infrastructure in India (ICRG) programme there is a novel initiative to look at MGNREGA with the climate lens and design assets that stand the whims and vagaries of climate. To ensure this, system strengthening and policy level changes in training & capacity building at the national level are in the offing. An equally exciting project is the evaluation of UNICEF supported Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction and School Safety Programmes in Bihar. For the first time, we are engaging with communities and school children in 6 of the most disaster prone districts of Bihar and conducting a qualitative research on the UNICEF programme to build capacities around disaster risk reduction.

dministration functions comprise vital parts of an organisation’s structure, helping the organisation to manage resources and people in an efficient manner. This year we have focused on strengthening our primary functions of ‘planning, budgeting and organising’ at IPE Global. A lack of quality in any of these is quite often detrimental to the health of any company. Going forward, our aim is to further fortify the roots and ensure that all the administrative needs of our colleagues at IPE Global are duly met.
