PLANNING FOR THE YEAR AHEAD As the year winds down and you look to review your PE program, here are some questions for you to consider when you begin for next year.

What is your key philosophy driving your PE program? Ensure you have a focus or philosophy which drives your PE program. This only needs to be a short statement outlining your program. Sample program philosophy: Each student has the right to develop skills and behaviours needed for lifelong physical activity in a healthy and safe environment.

What are the Core Intentions or Outcomes of your PE program? This could be 4 or 5 statements which make up the core intentions for your PE program. To help you develop your core intentions, ask: “What are the essential knowledge, skills and behaviours that you want students to leave your PE program with at the end of year 6?” Sample Core Intentions:

1. Proficient in the performance of fundamental movement skills (FMS) and can apply concepts and strategies when participating in games. 2. Demonstrates positive behaviours (such as sharing, teamwork, inclusive, group cooperation, fair play etc.) when playing games.

How do you use your Curriculum Time? Key Questions to ask:

Is my curriculum sequential from P – 6? Is my curriculum developmentally appropriate at each year level? Do I cover the content descriptors at each level? Do I achieve my core outcomes?

Fundamental Movement Skills?

Do I teach Fundamental Movement Skills explicitly in Foundation – Yr 3? Are all FMS equal? Which ones should I focus more of my teaching time on? Do I revise and encourage students to master FMS in Years 4-6?

Do my units have clear learning sequences from one lesson to the next to achieve my unit outcomes? How am I going to assess the students learning and progress throughout each unit? Have I included both formative and summative assessment in my units?

Theme-based or sports based units?

What do I currently do? What are the benefits of theme based approach over sports based? Is a Game Sense pedagogical approach to teaching more effective than direct instruction? What themes/sports do I want to focus on? When do I start teaching sport specific skills? How do I teach and assess game concepts and strategies? E.g. Invasion Games - maintaining possession of a ball, leading into space etc.

Do my lessons have clear Learning Intentions and Success Criteria? Are my activities carefully chosen and scaffold the learning of my students? Are these activities relevant to my Learning Intentions? How am I differentiating the learning of students?

Cooperation, teamwork, follow rules, fair play?

How do I teach group cooperation, following rules, fair play, being inclusive etc? How do I assess this? How can I link this part of the curriculum with the Personal and Social Capabilities?

Developing a Yearly Planner Below is a sample plan for Semester 1 – this is only a sample and teachers need to consider the needs of their students and school. Term 1
