Select, use and combine a variety of software (including internet services) on a range of digital devices to design and create content that accomplishes given goals, including collecting, analysing, evaluating and presenting data and information.

Tell the children they need to guess the mystery object. Show children two examples of a film of a mystery object. One that is very easy to guess. One with some effects but could be improved. (These are examples if you don’t have time to make your own.) For each film, ask the children if they can guess the mystery object. What were the clues? What was good about the film?

I can evaluate my work and improve its effectiveness. (3)

What could make the film better?

Discuss way in which we can give helpful feedback to each other. Use two stars and a wish or other format children are used to. Ask children to work in pairs to write a list of what would make an effective ‘Guess the mystery object film’. Tell the children they will be working in pairs to create their own film. Agree class success criteria for making their own film. Set each pair the task of checking they can change the camera on the tablet from photo to video. Without recording get the children to practise focussing in close to an object. What does the orange square do? (This is to make sure the important part of the image is in focus.) Set boundaries for where children can go to find their mystery object. Tell them that each pair will need to video the object and take two photographs of the object. Tell the children the video they take can only be a maximum of one minute. Pairs to find their object and take a short video and two photographs. A stop watch will help the children to keep to one minute. Children to return to the classroom and watch their video and check their photos. Make sure they can find their video on the camera roll.

Gold: Can I give useful feedback that explains what needs to be improved and why other things work well? Am I confident to video and take a photograph? Silver: Can I identify good things and things that need to be improved? Am I confident to change between recording a video and taking a photograph? Bronze: Can I tell you things which are good and things which are bad about the video? Can I take a photo? Can I record a video?

Short Term Planning Year 3 and 4 Mystery Object Remind children of the success criteria for a ‘Mystery Object’ film. Tell them they will be showing the film to other children in the school. Is there anything else which should be added to the success criteria? Talk about the audience for the film. Discuss which age each pair will be making the film for. I can combine a mixture of text, graphics and sound to share my ideas and learning. (3)

Children to review their video and photos. Ask them to write a list of things which could improve it. Model the use of iMovie. Keep any explanations as short as possible. Tell them that today they are going to use Simple choice for the movie. Key things they will need to know:  Tap + in top corner and choose Movie.  Tap Create movie (top right)  Find video and photos on the right of the screen.  Tap and tap arrow to add to timeline  Tap on the video on the timeline to see options  Refer to split as a way to delete a part of the video you don’t want or to duplicate a part of the video  Title to add their own title (or they can take a photograph of a title they have drawn on a piece of paper or written on a wipeable board)

Gold: Can I create a film suitable for a particular audience that combines video, photos and sound? Silver: Can I create a film combining video, photos and sound? Bronze: Can I create a film for other people?

Let the children have a go. Stop the class at appropriate points to ask what other things they have discovered in iMovie. Can they add their photos? Have they found where to add sound? (Both have tabs in the top right of the screen.) Look again at the success criteria. Provide each pair with a tick list of the criteria. Give them time to look at your their film and mark it against the criteria. Organise the class to show each other the films they have made. Can they guess the mystery object? What are the most effective things about the film? Is there anything that can be improved? Give the children time to edit and improve their films. Make sure the children know how to save the iMovie project as a finished film. Finished editing. Use back arrow top left to go to title screen. Tap on share and then choose ‘Save Video’ (below the icons for sharing). Children can show their films to children in other classes to see if they can guess the mystery objects OR the films can be uploaded to a video sharing site:

Short Term Planning Year 3 and 4 Mystery Object collaborate online. (4)

1. Talk to the children about safe and responsible use of video sharing sites such as YouTube and Vimeo. Look at terms of use for YouTube or for Vimeo . Tell the class that as they are under 13 you will upload the films that the class agree meet all of the success criteria. 2. Upload videos to a school Youtube or Vimeo account. (Make sure you have the permission of the Headteacher before creating the account.) Add links to the films on your school website. Encourage the children to show their families the films at home.
