Play Safe Volunteer Moderator Position Description Summary The Play Safe forum is an interactive online community for people aged 16-29 to ask questions and receive information about safer sex, STIs, and contraceptives. Volunteer Moderators are required to perform moderation of user content, respond to user questions, and generate discussion for the purpose of user engagement. To ensure that the forum is adequately resourced, and to ensure audience-appropriate language and conversation, volunteer peer moderators are an essential part of the Play Safe community management team.

What is Online Moderation? Online moderation includes checking user generated content including user posts and comments and taking appropriate actions to publish, edit, or delete content in line with the Community Guidelines and Community Risk Management Procedures. Typically managed by a Community Manager, often assisted by a team of moderators, online moderation duties include but are not limited to: • • •

creating new content including starting new conversation topics and replying to user generated topics hosting community events such as live discussions or interviews with special guests moderating user content, for example by approving, editing or deleting user comments in line with the forum moderation guidelines.

Volunteer Moderator Program Volunteer Moderators will participate in the Play Safe forum as a professional development opportunity suitable for university students who are keen to gain community management and/or health promotion experience. Successful applicants will be required to provide references and undertake Police Checks and Working with Children Checks.

Position Description Moderator Responsibilities 1.

Day to day delivery of the com m unity work plan a. Referring to content authored by Nurse Nettie, stakeholders, and other experts b. Creating relevant content and posting online events such as interviews and themed chats c. Monitoring, moderation, response and escalation of community activity d. Facilitating connections among community members e. Managing and administering community platforms and tools

Identifying, escalating and mitigating risks under management of Community Manager.

2. Com m unity Developm ent a. Work with key stakeholders, internally and within the community to develop and maintain a strategy to drive growth in the number of members and engagement of members b. Be an advocate for the community to the Community Manager, and the Play Safe project internally. c. Developing and grow relevant professional networks for collaboration and sharing of best practices, industry benchmarks and, opportunities and challenges d. Ecosystem scanning for relevant external individuals, communities or social media pages to engage with through cross promotion or sharing of content from and to the Play Safe community. e. Engage suitable people in the Play Safe age range to participate with the community directly (contributors) and indirectly (content provision) with a view to increasing membership or activity of the forum. f. Look for opportunities to participate in real-world events and community activities as relevant to growth and engagement strategies

Selection criteria Moderation experience

Experience managing or contributing to an online community (preferred) or an organisational social media account.

Knowledge and skills

Demonstrable online communications skills. Familiarity with a range of online, youthfocused sex, relationship and lifestyle online publications, social media accounts and communities. Diplomatic, calm and engaging presence in online communications, especially when discussion the Play Safe topic areas.

Sex positive – Interested in learning and sharing sexual health information in a sex positive, harm minimisation-focused community. Collaborative – works with others to achieve common goals; engenders a spirit of teamwork; inspires trust. Member focused – Prioritises needs of members and what is ultimately best for the support and engagement of the community Brave and diplomatic – Is comfortable talking to people about safer sex, STIs, STI tests and







3 condom use; is prepared to support members of the community who may disclose issues around sexual consent, rape, infidelity or shame around sexual matters. Self-disciplined - Manages own time to achieve key outcomes; able to minimise distraction and diversions

Qualifications

Analytical – Responds to questions and comments in a considered fashion; presents clear and logical arguments Community management certification (e.g. Econsultancy, Feverbee) or related tertiary education (e.g. communications, social media, health communication, health promotion) or relevant work experience in one of those fields will be highly valued. Understanding of corporate environments desirable. Experience with Vanilla (platform software) is helpful, but not essential
