SILVER BEAR BEST DIRECTOR 2017 BERLIN FILM FESTIVAL “Vibrant…A beautifully rendered work of animation that tells a powerful story.” —Steve Pond, THE WRAP “Twomey animates [Parvana’s storytelling] as though cut paper, a gorgeously playful complement to the exquisite cell drawings of the whole.” —Jared Mobarak, THE FILM STAGE

HHHH! “A deeply humane film, as well as a quietly hilarious one.” —Dave Calhoun, TIME OUT LONDON HHHHH! “Screamingly funny…simply sublime.”—Allan Hunter, THE LIST “This delightful comic fable expresses a belief in human decency…that feels wise and hopeful rather than naïve.”—Justin Chang, LOS ANGELES TIMES

HHHH! “Full of charm…What a truly lovely, heartwarming film…It is a bona fide, four-star delight.”—Brian Viner, DAILY MAIL HHHH! “Genuinely poignant…Briggs’ lovely detailed pictures of his parents’ home are perfectly recreated, and the couple are ideally voiced by Brenda Blethyn and Jim Broadbent.”—Edward Porter, THE SUNDAY TIMES

This wry, melancholic comedy from Finnish legend Aki Kaurismäki (THE MAN WITHOUT A PAST, LENINGRAD COWBOYS GO AMERICA), a clear-eyed response to the current refugee crisis, follows two people searching for a place to call home. Displaced Syrian Khaled (Sherwan Haji) lands in Helsinki as a stowaway; meanwhile, middle-aged shirt salesman Wikström (Sakari Kuosmanen) abruptly leaves his prickly wife and unfulfilling job and buys a conspicuously unprofitable seafood restaurant, which he tries to turn into a success with a hilarious series of culinary re-inventions. After Khaled is denied asylum, he decides not to return to Aleppo, staying on illegally in Helsinki—and the paths of the two men cross fortuitously, with unexpected results. As deadpan as the best of the director’s work, and with a deep well of empathy for its down-but-not-out characters (many of them played by members of Kaurismäki’s ever-reliable stock company), THE OTHER SIDE OF HOPE is a bittersweet tale of human kindness in the face of official indifference. Winner of the Silver Bear for Best Director at the 2017 Berlin International Film Festival. (Finland/Germany, 2017)

Based on the memoir by the acclaimed British author and illustrator Raymond Briggs (THE SNOWMAN, WHEN THE WIND BLOWS), this beautifully hand-drawn animated feature film tells the heartfelt true story of Raymond’s parents—Ethel and Ernest—two ordinary Londoners living through a period of extraordinary events and immense social change. Heart-warming, humorous and bittersweet, the film follows the lives of shy lady’s maid Ethel and jolly milkman Ernest from their first chance meeting in 1928, through the birth of their son Raymond in 1934, through surviving London in the Blitz, to their deaths, within months of each other, in 1971. ETHEL & ERNEST is a wonderfully amusing and affectionate tribute to an ordinary couple and an extraordinary generation. Features great voice characterizations by award-winning actors Jim Broadbent, Brenda Blethyn and Luke Treadaway, with music by internationally renowned composer Carl Davis and Sir Paul McCartney, who wrote and performed a special song for the film. Written and directed by Roger Mainwood (an animator on HEAVY METAL and WHEN THE WIND BLOWS). (UK, 2016)

From executive producer Angelina Jolie and Cartoon Saloon, creators of the Academy Award-nominated THE SECRET OF KELLS and SONG OF THE SEA, comes the wonderful new animated feature based on Deborah Ellis’ award-winning novel. THE BREADWINNER tells the story of Parvana (voice of Saara Chaudry), an 11-year-old girl growing up under the harsh rule of the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2001. She helps her father Nurullah, a storyteller, in the marketplace in Kabul, but they draw the disapproving attention of a Taliban soldier and Nurullah is arrested. With her family facing starvation, Parvana cuts her hair and dresses as a boy to go out and look for work, risking discovery to try to find out if her father is still alive. Honoring her father, Parvana makes up stories of a magical quest to entertain her little brother, stories that become intertwined with her real life adventures. The gorgeously colored animation is a visual delight. Directed by Nora Twomey, co-director of THE SECRET OF KELLS. In English. (Canada/Ireland/Luxembourg, 2017)

“Genius. Maverick. Inventor. Feminist pioneer. All of these descriptors apply to Lamarr.” —Joe Baker, DALLAS FILM NOW “Entertaining...Eye-opening…Amazing.”—John DeFore, THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

Jake (Anton Yelchin) and Mati (Lucie Lucas) are two loner expats who experience a brief but intimate connection in the beautiful and ancient Portuguese coastal city of Porto. He’s an American drifter exiled from his family. She’s an archaeology student from France embroiled in an affair with one of her professors. After spotting each other from a distance at an archeological site and then again at a train station and a café, Jake works up the courage to approach Mati, and they embark on a night of carefree intimacy. This romantic encounter is viewed from years later, both characters still haunted by the powerful connection they shared. Using a mix of film stocks and art direction that evokes a bygone era of European cinema, PORTO creates an emotional state of nostalgic longing for lost love. Romantic, elegiac and bittersweet, PORTO is a mood piece that weaves a spell, built around a memorable performance by Yelchin. Executive produced by Jim Jarmusch; directed and co-written in his fictional debut by former film critic Gabe Klinger. (Portugal/USA/France/Poland, 2017)

Hollywood star Hedy Lamarr (ZIEGFELD GIRL, SAMSON AND DELILAH) was known as the world’s most beautiful woman—Snow White and Cat Woman were both based on her iconic look. However, her incredible beauty stood in the way of her being given the credit she deserved as an ingenious inventor whose pioneering work eventually helped revolutionize modern communication. Mislabeled as “just another pretty face,” Hedy’s true legacy is that of a brilliant technological trailblazer. An Austrian Jewish émigré, she wanted to help defeat the Nazis. She invented a covert “frequency hopping” communications system to make Allied torpedoes unstoppable, and then patriotically gave her 1942 patent to the Navy, who ignored it and told her to sell kisses for war bonds instead. Throughout her life few knew of Hedy’s secret history, but in 2016 director Alexandra Dean and producer Adam Haggiag unearthed four never-before-heard audio tapes of Hedy speaking about her incredible life. Combining this newly discovered interview with intimate reflections from her children, closest friends, family and admirers, including Mel Brooks and Robert Osborne, BOMBSHELL finally sets the record straight, giving Hedy Lamarr the chance to tell her own amazing story. “Kate Winslet is stunning in Woody Allen’s gorgeous ‘50s romance.”—INDIEWIRE “The most beautiful film Woody Allen has made in years thanks to Vittorio Storaro’s exquisite lighting.”—Graham Fuller, SCREEN DAILY “There are moments in Wonder Wheel that color in the characters’ experiences in a way that can leave you breathless.”—Owen Gleiberman, VARIETY

Written and directed by Woody Allen, WONDER WHEEL tells the story of four characters whose lives intertwine amid the hustle and bustle of the Coney Island amusement park in the 1950s, in the shadow of the giant ferris wheel: Ginny (Kate Winslet), an emotionally volatile former actress now working as a waitress in a clam house, beaten down but still dreaming of a better life; Humpty (Jim Belushi), Ginny’s rough-hewn carousel operator husband, who loves but doesn’t understand his wife; Mickey (Justin Timberlake), a handsome, young and incurably romantic lifeguard hoping to become a significant playwright; and Carolina (Juno Temple), Humpty’s long-estranged daughter, broke and now desperately hiding out from gangsters at her father’s apartment. Poetically photographed by legendary cinematographer Vittorio Storaro (CAFÉ SOCIETY, THE LAST EMPEROR, APOCALYPSE NOW), WONDER WHEEL is a powerful dramatic tale of passion, violence, jealousy and betrayal that plays out against the picturesque tableau of 1950s Coney Island. “Masterful…One of [del Toro’s] deepest, most complex, most rewarding, and flat-out beautiful films. It is enchanting and moving, the kind of movie you want to see again the minute it’s over.”—Brian Tallerico, ROGEREBERT.COM “Marvelous…Its humor, its heart, and its horror all work in beautiful concert…The Shape of Water is as richly realized, as uniquely captivating, as anything you’re likely to see this fall.”—Richard Lawson, VANITY FAIR

Master storyteller Guillermo del Toro (PAN’S LABYRINTH, CRIMSON PEAK, HELLBOY) casts an other-worldly spell with THE SHAPE OF WATER, an imaginative fairy tale set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1962. In the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works as a cleaner, mute Elisa (Sally Hawkins, BLUE JASMINE, MAUDIE) is trapped in a life of lonely isolation. Elisa’s life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer, HIDDEN FIGURES, THE HELP) discover a secret classified experiment. Visually dazzling and emotionally daring, THE SHAPE OF WATER merges the pathos and thrills of the classic monster movie tradition with shadowy film noir, stirring in the heat of a love story like no other to explore the fantasies we all flirt with, the mysteries we can’t control and the monstrosities we must confront. Also starring Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Doug Jones and Michael Stuhlbarg. (USA, 2017) foxsearchlight.com/theshapeofwater

“Bell is absolutely riveting…Bening captures the spirit of the complicated actress with remarkable subtlety and flair…There is no denying the emotional force that this film develops, and for that, we can credit talented filmmakers and two stars working at the height of their powers.”—Stephen Farber, THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

Based on Peter Turner’s acclaimed memoir of the same name, FILM STARS DON’T DIE IN LIVERPOOL follows the playful but passionate relationship between aspiring actor Turner (Jamie Bell, JANE EYRE, BILLY ELLIOT) and eccentric Academy Award-winning actress Gloria Grahame (Annette Bening, 20TH CENTURY WOMEN, AMERICAN BEAUTY, THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT) in 1978 Liverpool. Grahame had starred in several 1950s hit films, including THE BIG HEAT, OKLAHOMA! and THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL, but by the 1970s she was clinging to the remains of her fame acting in a British stage revival. What starts as a vibrant affair between the legendary femme fatale and her young lover quickly grows into a deeper relationship, with Turner being the person Gloria turns to for comfort and strength. Their passion and lust for life is tested to the limits by events beyond their control. Julie Walters and Vanessa Redgrave co-star. The soundtrack features a host of hits from the period, along with new music, including a specially recorded track by Elvis Costello. Written by Matt Greenhalgh (CONTROL, NOWHERE BOY) and directed by Paul McGuigan (“Sherlock,” LUCKY NUMBER SLEVIN). (UK, 2017) sonyclassics.com/filmstarsdontdieinliverpool
