Position Purpose: SANE Australia is an independent national organisation helping all Australians affected by mental illness lead a better life. It does this through a range of campaigns, research, education, training and support programs. SANE Australia is developing an online community service for carers, and for people living with mental illness. We seek someone to help engage with users, and to assist them in getting the most out of the service. The service will allow adults to safely and anonymously share stories, ask questions, and help and support one another. SANE Online Communities will be available later in 2014. SANE Online Communities will provide carers and people living with mental illness two distinct forums where people can share and discuss items relating to mental health, and anything else that may be of interest to them. The service will assist community members in: • • • •

Finding and sharing information Feeling supported Creating/maintaining relationships with others Navigating the experience of health services

Relating their story Visualising and/or modelling mental illness Supporting healthy behaviour

The Community Engagement Specialist will be responsible for the online moderation of the forum service, with the support of other moderators. The position will also assist with building and maintaining a strong and safe online, peer-to-peer support community and assist with the development and review of program policies and procedures. This role involves working late afternoon into evenings and some weekends. There may also be some travel required, particularly in the first three months of engagement.

Responsibilities: Online community engagement • • • •

Moderate conversations on SANE Australia forums and in so doing help to build an engaged and safe community Be responsible for daily review of community discussions and content contributions Provide support for AEST hours of afternoon (commencing no earlier than 4.30pm AEST) into evening (finishing no later than 9pm) Ensure compliance with SANE Australia’s duty of care and service management policies and procedures

Report on moderation and community activities. Liaise with the Online Community Manager and/or other moderators in responding to any crisis or other eventuality needing attention Contribute to the implementation and review process for SANE Australia’s Duty of Care framework Other as may be required

Community Engagement • • • • • •

Contribute to the realisation of SANE Australia’s Community Growth and Engagement Strategy Assist with building and maintaining a strong and safe online, peer-to-peer support community Work to establish a healthy, positive, kind and welcoming environment for users whilst understanding the need to tell one’s story Assist in identifying the changing needs of the community Assist in the production of regular updates and forum round-ups for distribution to ensure the online community remains engaged and informed Liaise with other SANE Australia and/or partner organisation moderators

Communications and Training • • • •

Promote the service through online and offline activities, inc online event facilitation Participate in own training, and the training of other moderators supported by the Online Community Manager and/or other resources, as may be required Assist with development and review of moderator support materials, policies, guidelines, and work practices based on experience Working with moderator colleagues from SANE and partner organisations on mutual professional development, feedback, and dialogue aimed at continuous improvement

Qualifications •

Degree or equivalent in mental health or a related field, including nursing

Selection Criteria - Essential • • • • • • •

Experience with moderation of online community discussion Excellent online and offline communication skills Active engagement in social media space, e.g. blogger, Facebook, Twitter, Google Demonstrated experience in organising one’s own time and proactive engagement with one’s own work Demonstrated interest and ability to work collaboratively and patiently with adults, including adults living with mental illness A deep commitment to the health and well-being of our target users Commitment to SANE Australia’s values.

Experience managing and/or supporting vulnerable online communities and/or vulnerable groups or individuals Experience working with volunteers Mobile technology experience
