POSITION PURPOSE: Supports the implementation of the NC English/Language Arts (ELA) curriculum in elementary schools. Designs, delivers, and facilitates professional development for teachers and teacher leader specialists in best practices in literacy instruction; assists in creating lessons for core instruction. Provides support to the Senior Administrator of ELA with county-wide literacy initiatives and fosters collaboration among all groups that provide literacy instruction at the school level. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES  Extensive knowledge of research based instructional literacy practices at the elementary level;  Extensive knowledge of Excellent Public School Acts which includes mCLASS and Read to Achieve;  Considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;  Considerable knowledge of accessing cloud-based environments such as Google Apps;  Effective oral and written communication skills;  Reflective, self-directed, flexible thinking skills, ability to problem solve;  Ability to design and deliver professional development;  Ability to lead projects from the planning stages to completion;  Ability to work in a team environment;  Ability to work independently and complete tasks in the absence of clear direction;  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school system staff, students, external agencies, and the public. EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE  Bachelor’s degree in elementary education;  Three years of teaching experience at the elementary level;  Experience designing and delivering professional development to adult learners;  Training and experience in literacy practices at the elementary level. CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS  Hold or be eligible to hold a North Carolina Professional Educator’s License in Elementary Education;  Willingness to obtain K-12 reading certification within one year.

POSITION DESCRIPTION PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Experience as a literacy coach, Instructional Resource Teacher (IRT), or literacy teacher. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Supports the implementation of the NC English/Language Arts (ELA) curriculum in elementary schools by developing protocols and plans for reading and writing instruction. 2. Provides support to the Senior Administrator of ELA with county-wide literacy initiatives and fosters collaboration among all groups that provide literacy instruction at the school level. 3. Collaborates with other central services departments for successful and coordinated implementation of balanced literacy. 4. Communicates regularly with IRTs, principals, literacy coaches, and other coordinating teachers to answer questions, create additional support tools, and provide on-site support as needed. 5. Designs and delivers professional development to support reading and writing core instruction for school based staff. 6. Supports district literacy initiatives through project management, professional development, material ordering and distribution, and on-site school visits. 7. Collaborates with various departments and outside agencies with a focus on literacy to inform professional development and support for the Excellent Public Schools Act. 8. Perform other duties as assigned. WORKING CONDITIONS: PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT Must be able to use a variety of office equipment such as computers, scanners, and copiers. Must be able to communicate effectively. At times requires the ability to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects up to ten pounds. Due to the amount of time spent standing and/or walking, physical requirements are consistent with those for light work. WORK ENVIRONMENT Must be able to work in an office and school environment and come into direct contact with school system staff, students, external agencies, and the public.
