Are you looking for an exciting opportunity in the sustainability field? The Fraser Basin Council is seeking a Program Assistant to join the Climate Change and Air Quality team. Reporting to the Youth Program Manager, this position assists in the effective implementation and administration of the Fraser Basin Council programs and operations. This position is for a minimum of a 12-month term of employment, starting in January 2018, with the potential for extension, subject to performance and available financial resources. This position is ideal for an individual passionate about creating opportunities for engaging youth in sustainability initiatives and assisting with research and delivery of projects under the Climate Change and Air Quality program at the Fraser Basin Council. As this position is partially funded by ECO Canada’s Internship Funding Program, the successful candidate must meet these program criteria: -

Approved as a Candidate for ECO Canada’s EYC or Natural Resources Programs Willing to take on a full-time position Must be 30 years of age or younger Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have refugee status Educated with a minimum 2-year diploma

Summary of Essential Job Functions The key role of the Youth Program Assistant is to help the Program Manager with the coordination, implementation and administration duties and to take a leadership role in researching, planning, and expanding the Youth Program’s portfolio. The successful candidate will also assist with research opportunities in areas of climate change impacts and adaptation risks facing BC and with the development of programs to increase electric vehicle adoption in BC. This internship is well suited to an applicant with a multi-disciplinary background in environmental science, community planning, or community and youth engagement.

Summary of Key Duties and Responsibilities • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Research youth-focused organizations and best practices for youth engagement; Help identify gaps and pursue new opportunities to expand the youth program’s portfolio; Develop trusting relationships with key organizations, youth participants and program partners; Work with youth representatives, universities, government, private sector and general community members on identifying opportunities to address sustainability challenges specific to each community; Provide ongoing support and coordination to FBC Youth Committee – including agenda and minutes for in- person events or teleconferences, planning meetings, circulating relevant information; Develop a robust engagement and enabling plan and design and deliver program activities to increase youth participation in leadership roles in sustainability initiatives; Assist with fund development and engage potential sponsors and funders through targeted letter writing, phone calls and outreach at key events to secure support for youth initiatives; Work with FBC staff and the Youth Committee to ensure youth perspectives are integrated into FBC activities; Explore and research opportunities in areas of climate change impacts and adaptation risks facing BC; Assist with the development and delivery of programs to increase electric vehicle adoption in BC; Develop and deliver presentations for the FBC Board, project partners, funders and other external audiences; Assist with various program reporting, briefing notes, and administrative duties; Support and deliver on various print and online communications needs, including media releases, newsletters, social media and online platforms; Expand FBC communications and outreach that pertains to youth audiences and youth initiatives; Support with identifying metrics to measure program success and identify areas for improvement on ongoing basis.

Preferred Qualifications and Requirements • • • • • • • • • • • •

Excellent research, interpersonal and communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate with diverse group of stakeholders verbally or in writing; Skills in coordinating complex projects and working with a decentralized, multi-disciplinary staff team; Ability to effectively engage youth and young adults of diverse backgrounds. Candidates with previous youth project coordination and administration experience will be preferred. Experience with designing and facilitating dynamic and innovative workshops for youth; Proven outreach skills and ability to effectively utilize social media to engage youth and grow the program; Understanding of environmental, economic and social dimensions of sustainability issues, policies and practices relevant to BC communities and regions; Ability to take initiative and manage time to complete delegated tasks efficiently with minimal supervision; Preferred experience in the planning and delivery of meetings, workshops and other events; Familiarity with planning and development processes, including provincial, regional or local development bylaws and regulations preferred; Attention to detail and familiarity with developing funding proposals; Willingness to travel within BC and to work occasional evenings and/or weekends University or college degree in community, regional or land use or environmental planning; environment and resource management; biology or geography and/or expertise as relevant to the position.
