POSITION INFORMATION Vacancy Announcement: UNEP/ROLAC – Brazil Office 18/2016 Type of Contract: Service Contract Duration: 12 months Closing date for application: May 31th, 2016. ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT The objective of this Term of Reference is to hire a Communications Analyst that will provide support with communications management, maintenance of records, production of press releases, documentation and other texts, assistance to press, support to the projects, and development of information material for the local and global website, among other tasks. FUNCTIONS / KEY RESULTS EXPECTED Expected results The key results have an impact on the creation of effective communications and dissemination the UNEP Brazil Office activities and purpose. A results-oriented and efficient approach have an impact on the implementation of the UNEP communications strategies and therefore on the projection of the image of UNEP in the country. Objectives, expected outputs and accomplishment indicators: The Communications Analyst will be responsible for providing communications support to the UNEP Representative in Brazil, and to implement a communications strategy for UNEP Brazil Office, following the guidelines from ROLAC and Headquarters. The communications analyst will work in close collaboration with the project officers and other staff members, and will be responsible to coordinate the Communications Clerk activities, if applicable. The tasks and responsibilities of the Communications Analyst includes:  Gather information to assist the Representative in the elaboration of documents, analysis, reports and other communications tasks;  Collect background information and contribute to the preparation of reports, project documents, presentations and working papers namely in environment-related sectors;  Maintain and regularly update the UNEP Brazil website as well as the UNEP Brazil social networks. Provide and share information on UNEP Brazil activities to be published by the global UNEP communications network;  Prepare drafts of documents, correspondence, general reports and overview registry, and filing related actions;  Provide overall support to UNEP programme implementation in Brazil, including organization of events and press conferences, production of information materials, preparation of hotsites and other tasks;  Collaborate with colleagues to define key issues, messaging, and communications channels for public advocacy initiatives;  Engage in strategic communications planning and processes to support UNEP’s mission, strengthen the visibility of the organization and raise public awareness on environmental issues;  Maintain the office’s mailing list always updated;  Implementation of internal and external strategies for communications and outreach;  Liaise regularly with UNEP ROLAC Communications Officer to align the implementation of the strategies;  Oversee the development of UNEP Communications and engage with UNEP team and counterparts for successful publication of UNEP materials;

Liaise with UNEP HQs, regional offices and divisions and environment institutions on collecting and distributing materials and preparing informative notes and press releases including provision of inputs for the local website and its maintenance; Liaise with partners (projects, UN agencies, NGOs and other counterparts) for dissemination of UNEP activities at sub-regional and national level; Under the supervision of the Office Representative, represent UNEP at meetings, as required; Contact and work with print and broadcast media to generate proactive and positive news coverage. Monitor national media and establish the overall capacity of the Country Office to initiate and respond to media contacts with required speed and skill. Organize/attend meetings, press briefings, rendezvous with journalists and other public events as needed; Advise the Representative and the country programme team on the effective use of tools of mass communication, including press briefings and conferences and media interviews, to achieve programme objectives. Facilitate knowledge building and knowledge sharing; Participate at the UN Communication Group under the guidance of the Representative; subscribe to the principles and mission of the UNCG as a strong unifying platform for dealing with common communication challenges facing the UN, and ensure effective advocacy for the UNEP mandate and its mission through timely reporting and documentation of activities. - Contribute to identifying new and creative ways to show how UN programmes are delivering results and promoting a coherent image of the UN; Support the organization of workshops, seminars and missions, including travel arrangements and preparation of agendas; Collaborate in the organization of UNEP events such as World Environment Day, Champions of the Earth, launch of reports and other events; Contribute to the regular newsletters of the UNEP Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean and for other communications materials; Perform other tasks as required.

REPORTING LINES The Communication Analyst will work under direct supervision of the UNEP Representative in Brazil, and with recommendations from DCPI senior staff at ROLAC and Headquarters. RECRUITMENT QUALIFICATIONS Education University Degree in Journalism, Communications Studies, Public Relations, or other related field with expertise on sustainability, socioenvironmental content; Professional experience At least 5 (five) years of relevant experience in the field is required at the national or international level. Previous experience within UN System is an asset. At least 2 years of experience of environmental journalism is preferable. Experience in public relations is preferable. Experience in the usage of computers and office software package, in handling web based management systems and knowledge of spreadsheet and database packages. Knowledge of Adobe software’s such as Acrobat X Pro, InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator is desirable. Initiative and responsibility; teamwork ability, high flexibility and capacity to work under pressure Languages Fluency in English and Portuguese (writing, reading and speaking). Knowledge of Spanish is an asset.
