Communications Officer Senior Manager, Global Communications May 2017

2. Overall Purpose/Broad Function: Reporting to the Senior Manager, Global Communications, External Relations Unit, and joining a global team of seasoned communications professionals, the Communications Officer will support profile-raising and public outreach activities intended to promote Nutrition International as a leading global nutrition organization in Canada and internationally, elevate its profile within the international development and scientific community, and strengthen connections with Nutrition International’s current and prospective audiences (academia, donor and government community). The Communications Officer will also support activities meant to enhance internal communications to help improve staff engagement. This position requires: exceptional writing skills for print and digital products as well as for oral presentations; the ability to synthesize and translate technical knowledge into products for a nonexpert audience; the ability to devise strong communications strategies for special projects and campaigns; the ability to deliver high-quality, well written materials under tight deadlines; exceptional project management skills; the ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment; creativity, autonomy, drive, positivity, humor and enthusiasm. An understanding of change management would be asset. 3. Key Duties and Responsibilities: Key duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 1. Create and execute strong marketing, communications and public outreach strategies and plans aligned with Nutrition International’s opportunities, goals and objectives. 2. Serve as a communications, marketing, knowledge advisor and resource to units across the organization. 3. Write for/review/edit copy publications such as corporate/project brochures, leaflets, annual reports, thought leadership publications, e-newsletters, case studies, website pages and scripts for presentations and videos. 4. Produce reports and stories around Nutrition International’s research and findings. 5. Drive the production of key messages, field stories, speeches, editorial pieces, blog postings. 6. Develop key messages for staff and Upper Management. 7. Support communications efforts for conferences and events in Canada and around the world. 8. Coordinating with the Design Officer, support the creation of organization-wide assets, including presentations, event collateral, videos, country and program profiles. 9. Support stewardship of Nutrition International’s global supporters/allies, and the distribution of Nutrition International content/stories through a variety of communications channels.

3. Key Duties and Responsibilities: 10. Support media relations efforts, including the production of media plans, talking points, relationship building, media placement and media training for staff. 11. Manage and oversee the work done by consultants working on various communications projects to make sure the deliverables are submitted on time and meet quality expectations. Other duties and responsibilities may be required. 4. Supervisory Responsibilities: No staff supervisory obligations. Supervision of consultants only. 5. Education/Professional Designations/Experience:  

Bachelor’s degree or college certification in Communications, Public Relations, Public Affairs, Marketing, or Journalism (or equivalent) with a minimum of five years’ experience. Previous NGO experience and a demonstrated commitment to international development preferred.

6. Language Skills  

English essential. French an asset.

7. Travel Requirements Some domestic and/or international travel may be required – not expected to exceed 20 days a year. 8. Other Specific Skill Requirements & Assets:        

Proficiency in all Microsoft Office applications (Word, PPT, Excel). Ability to use Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress and social media tools. Solid understanding of the international development environment and the Sustainable Development Goals agenda. Experience working in an international organization or complex organizational structure. Proven track record of published blogs, content, articles, op-ed would be an asset. Up-to-date knowledge on new and emerging communications technologies and practices. Ability to work in a multi-cultural, team environment. Currently legally entitled to work in Canada This job description can and will be amended as required from time to time.
