This position serves as a GS-11 soil scientist in the supervisor’s office, with responsibility for conducting and interpreting soil surveys and analysis, watershed rehabilitation and management planning, and providing technical guidance within the framework of multiple-use management of forest and range lands. MAJOR DUTIES (Additional duties described on USA Jobs Vacancy Announcement) • Participates in interdisciplinary teams assessing restoration activites and changed conditions on a post-fire landscape. • Independently studies soil resources data needed to support the Forest’s position during negotiations and litigation. This study includes collecting original data, assembling previously collected records, and analyzing and evaluating all assembled data to determine hydrologic and sediment transport characteristics including quantity, quality, and distribution over time and area. Translates these findings into long range prescriptions or plans for management's use in vegetation management actions. • Consults with other resource specialists in assessing the impacts of proposed programs and projects on soil values. • Communicates risk assessment to line and staff to help with land management decisions, ensuring good, continuous communication. • Participates in the land management planning process. Provides professional soils input into the development of the Forest plan, which involves gathering data, analyzing data, and making recommendations. Participates as required in the development of environmental assessments or environmental impact statements. • Performs other duties as assigned.

DUTY STATION SPECIFICS: Nez Perce – Clearwater National Forest COMMUNITY INFORMATION: IDAHO COUNTY LIVING SITUATION AND SOCIAL ACTIVITIES Idaho County is known for its excellent outdoor recreational opportunities. Outdoor recreation, lumber production, farming and cattle ranching are the major industries. Idaho County and its communities enjoy close access to scenic and wildlife areas. Whitewater rafting is a popular pursuit on the Clearwater, Snake, and Salmon River. Salmon and steelhead fishing is often a choice of recreation. Many residents of Idaho County hunt deer, elk, and turkeys in the nearby forests. Hiking is also popular in the Nez Perce National Forest, the Gospel Hump Wilderness, and Hells Canyon. POPULATION/ELEVATION/CLIMATE Established by the Washington Territorial Legislature in 1862, Idaho County is the largest county in Idaho, covering 8503 square miles. It is located in the north-central region of Idaho, through which the Clearwater, Salmon and Snake rivers flow. There are approximately 16,000 people living in the county, with Grangeville as the county seat. The climate is mild, with the average summer temperature at 71 degrees and the average winter temperature 33 degrees. The frost-free gardening season extends from around May 15 until October 15. HOUSING The housing market has plenty to offer although rentals are limited. Rental rates for an average three-bedroom home range from $350 to $650 per month. Purchase price for a three-bedroom home ranges from $85,000 to $250,000 or more. Area population centers are Lewiston - 70 miles away; Moscow, 110 miles away; Missoula, Montana - 170 miles away and Spokane, Washington - 190 miles away. MEDICAL Syringa Hospital and Clinics are located in Grangeville, with additional services being offered in Cottonwood. Full service medical facilities are located in Lewiston, Spokane and Missoula. RECREATION The Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest and its 6 Ranger Districts encompass 3 wildernesses, 5 scenic and wild rivers, and Hells Canyon NRA. Approximately 4000 miles of wilderness and nonwilderness trails provide experiences for hikers, horseback riders, mountain bikers, motorcyclists and ATVs. In addition, the area is known for its outstanding white-water rafting opportunities, worldrenowned steelhead, coho and salmon fisheries, big game hunting, and mushroom and huckleberry harvest opportunities.

NEZ PERCE - CLEARWATER NATIONAL FOREST: The Nez Perce - Clearwater National Forest includes approximately 4 million acres of land that ranges in elevation from 1,600 to almost 9,000 feet. The Supervisor’s Office is located in Kamiah, Idaho. The weather is characterized by distinct seasons. Much of the Forest is snowbound December through May. A pleasant summer season usually extends from June through September, but higher elevations remain inaccessible until early July. Summer temperatures in the 90’s are possible, but nights are cool. Lightening storms are common in July and August. The Nez Perce - Clearwater National Forest offers an abundance of recreation opportunities. From hiking to horseback riding, whitewater trips, to snowmobiling, bird watching to big-game hunting and blue ribbon trout stream fishing. The list goes on, matching the numerous interests of the Forest’s visitors. Of course, there’s plenty of opportunity for leisurely camping as well as challenges awaiting the visitor to the backcountry or the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness.
