POST-16 PROGRAMME 2017-18

AIMING HIGHER TOGETHER

gmhigher.ac.uk

GREATER MANCHESTER HIGHER A collaboration of universities and further education colleges from across Greater Manchester, who are working together to provide high quality outreach activities for local schools and colleges. Greater Manchester Higher aims to improve the provision of information, advice and guidance about progression routes to higher education (HE) and improved information about the variety of HE options for learners and their key influencers.

About the National Collaborative Outreach Programme (NCOP) We deliver the government-funded NCOP programme in Greater Manchester, a programme with the overall aim of reaching the government’s goal of doubling participation in Higher Education amongst disadvantaged groups by 2020. More information can be found: hefce.ac.uk/sas/ncop Our programme was developed in consultation with teachers, advisors and other stakeholders and is collaborative, impartial and targeted. Find out more about the full programme on our website gmhigher.ac.uk

Targeting, Monitoring and Evaluation Based on government policy, our programme is targeted by learner postcodes. Our work focuses on providing intensive activities with Y9-13 learners from target wards. Support with targeting is available from your designated Greater Manchester Higher hub manager; these details can be found on pg.11 of this brochure or on our website. It is important that we demonstrate the success of our work; therefore, we will need some support from schools and colleges in evaluating outcomes to demonstrate our long-term impact.

IN-SCHOOL/COLLEGE ACTIVITY

Degree or Apprenticeship?

University or work-based alternative? This question can be one of the main decisions faced by post-16 learners, and now with the introduction of higher and degree apprenticeships there is potential to have the ‘best of both worlds’, without the tuition fees. The aim of the session is for learners to know how to make a more informed decision as to which pathway best suits them. It will specifically look at earn-while-you-learn pathways to a HE-level qualification and where to source and research these vacancies, along with the ‘pros vs cons’ of apprenticeship pathways and traditional routes.

Parents’ and Supporters’ Talks

Where to get impartial advice? Parents/carers and supporters have a big influence on learners’ decisions on what and where to study, but with so many changes going on in higher education, it pays to have an impartial insight into the science of making decisions and where best to source the information that matters. Greater Manchester Higher’s IAG manager Ian McGarry has extensive experience working in recruitment and admissions, his insights will help both learners and parents/carers and supporters to make sense of the options available. Content can be adapted to suit your event.

1-2-1 Higher Education IAG Interviews

Interested in interviews to help with your learners’ focus? Greater Manchester Higher’s graduate advisors are based across the region and are trained to provide impartial information, advice and guidance (IAG) about all things related to higher education. Taking part in 1-2-1 interviews can help to increase learners’ focus on higher education options. We’re pleased to be offering this input in conjunction with the SACU Student platform: sacu-student.com From February 2018, the advisors will be able to offer 1-2-1 HEIAG interviews with learners from our target NCOP postcode areas. This can add value to your existing school/college post-16 progression activities and help to meet Ofsted requirements.

Delivered on site, these sessions offer an impartial perspective on both traditional and non-traditional pathways into higher education and how best to manage different stages of the application process. We encourage you to book a number of these HEIAG (Higher Education Information and Guidance) sessions sequentially to support your progression activities. For a positive learner experience, our sessions are best delivered in workshop formats for 45-60 minutes to groups of no more than 30 students.

Activity Interview Skills

Description How to prepare for a HE interview? While few university courses interview, higher and degree apprenticeship pathways can be competitive and come with different types of assessment. It is beneficial to prepare learners for the possible demands of a selection process. This workshop equips learners with techniques and best practice for both types of interview and assessment, as well as tips on how to perform to the best of their ability.

Managing your UCAS Offers and Preparing for Results Day

What does the UCAS process involve? This session looks at what happens after a UCAS application is submitted, from the perspective of both the student and the university or college, providing an insight into the different types of offers made to students and how best to make informed decisions. It concludes by looking ahead to Results Day and preparing for all possible scenarios. On request, content can be split into two 20-minute presentations. Please speak to your hub manager in the first instance.

Student Life

What is it like being a university student? Hear directly from Greater Manchester Higher student ambassadors who are studying for higher education qualifications in the region’s universities and colleges. Our ambassadors will pass on their advice on to how to ‘survive and thrive’ at university through tackling issues such as budgeting, adapting to the new learning environment, preparing for the workplace and making the most of the student experience.

Why HE? Researching Your Options

What are the best ways to research HE options? This session introduces learners to higher education and the lifelong benefits attending university can offer. It will also explore non-traditional routes, such as higher and degree apprenticeships, and the option to study a HE qualification in a FE setting. The session will empower learners to undertake their own research into different courses and options.

Preparing for University Open Days

How to prepare for an Open Day? There are a range of university Open Days on offer regionally and nationally, providing various information to learners about courses and applications. This session looks specifically at how to get the best experience from a university Open Day and what sort of questions to ask. We recommend that this content is delivered to Year 12 students from Spring 2018 onwards. Some of our summer schools are residential, which provides the opportunity for students to stay in halls of residence.

Insight Mentoring (6 weeks): January – April

Individual learners are required to book their place, by first completing an online ‘expression of interest’ form, before 20 April 2018:

How does it work?

(Please note, the web-link is case sensitive)

In each cohort, up to 500 Y12 learners will be matched with an online mentor for 6 weeks. They will send and receive messages, and complete e-learning activities designed to give them an insight into working and studying within a particular sector, or a more general insight into HE.

bit.ly/uni4u_Y12 The 2018 programme runs between 25 June and 23 July.

Learners can sign-up until mid-March 2018. For more information, please contact your hub manager.

HE Application Support Mentoring (6 months): May – November How does it work? Up to 300 Y12 learners will be matched with an online mentor for 6 months, they will send and receive messages, and complete e-learning activities designed to support them through the HE application process, from the initial exploration of institution/course choice to the development of a UCAS or Higher Apprenticeship application. Mentors will be current HE students studying at one of Greater Manchester Highers’ partner institutions. The programme starts in May and schools/colleges must confirm interest by 30th March 2018 by contacting [email protected] or your hub manager.
